Table of ContentsThe Green Building Guide, which offers a broad introduction to green building materials and waste reduction methods, was funded through waste reduction grants from the County of Santa Cruz Departments of Public Works Recycling and Solid Waste and the City of Santa Cruz Planning Department. It provides a basic overview of environmental considerations and an outline of environmentally friendly alternatives to conventional techniques, as well as resources for further investigation.
This directory was created to help the residents of the county close the loop and buy recycled content materials from the businesses in the directory. The County promotes green building because, among other reasons, our County’s landfill has only a few years of capacity remaining and both jurisdictions have adopted Zero Waste goals .
In 1995, the recycling rate in the Unincorporated area of Santa Cruz County was just 21% and the City’s 35%. In 2004, according to data submitted to the California Integrated Waste Management Board, Unincorporated Santa Cruz County was recycling at a rate of 58% and the City at 56%.
While this is impressive progress, it only buys us a little more time to solve the problem. Unincorporated County and City residents and businesses need to work together and establish a very strict goal in order to manage solid waste responsibly and extend the life of our landfill for as long as possible. Construction/demolition waste constitutes a very large percentage of the County and City’s disposed waste, and widespread practice of green building will reduce that volume significantly. Each of us has a stake in preserving resources for future generations, and by our own actions, each of us can make a difference.
The County and City of Santa Cruz do not necessarily endorse or recommended the services or products listed in this Directory. The County and City of Santa Cruz offer this directory as a supplement to the Green Building Guidelines to assist you with brief profiles of local businesses that offer services and materials to help you plan your green building projects. This directory was developed in collaboration by Ana Maria Rebelo of Santa Cruz County, Victor Aguiar, Karsten Mueller, and Louis Landolph of Ecology Action, and Marilyn Crenshaw of The Green Architect.
