With the binge-drinking days of the Christmas festivi- ties ahead of us, a few sobering thoughts might be timely for anyone involved in the British and Irish blood- stock industries. One such thought is provided by the list of the top 50 stallions of 2006, which underlines the industry=s unhealthy dependence on fewer and fewer male lines. As many as 29 of the top 50 stallions are members of the Northern Dancer male line, with the burgeoning Danzig branch accounting for no fewer than 16 of these and the Sadler=s Wells branch for six. Native Dancer=s grandsons Mr. Prospector and Sharpen Up have scores of five and two, respectively, while the Roberto line accounts for an- other four (with Tagula boost- ing the Hail to Reason line=s total to five). Remarkably though the Nasrullah male line has beenlargely overwhelmed with the formerly powerful MillReef and Blushing Groom branches having only onerepresentative apiece There are none from the GreySovereign or Riverman branches On the other hand the Ahonoora male line makes adecent showing with four representatives but onemust wonder whether this male line has a long-termfuture now that its main standard-bearer Indian Ridgehas died Indian Ridge=s highest-ranked son the11th-placed Inchinor is also dead and none of his othersons--such as Compton Place Definite ArticleDomedriver Indian Haven Namid and the newcomerSleeping Indian--commands a fee higher than ComptonPlace=s 10000 (up from 7000 in 2006) It mustn=t be forgotten though that this male line hasan uncanny knack of springing surprises Ahonoora andIndian Ridge both had enough talent to work their waythrough the ranks so what=s to stop the next genera-tions doing the same Another example of this male line=s ability to surprisewas supplied by Ahonoora=s grandson Collier Hill whenhe took the Hong Kong Vase two days ago to makehimself a Group 1 winner on three different continentsThis son of the Derby winner Dr Devious is now agroup winner in no fewer than five countries The mention of Dr Devious= name is another reminderof this male line=s ability to shock When Dr Devioustriumphed in the 1992 Derby everyone wanted toknow how Ahonoora could have sired a majormile-and-a-half classic winner Ahonoora after all hadnever raced farther than seven furlongs and had neverwon farther than six He had demonstrated tremendousinitial speed at odds of 50-1 in the six-furlong Stew-ards= Cup as a three-year-old when he led a big fieldfrom the start His speed was even more evident atfour when he established himself among the bestperformers over the minimum trip of five furlongs Oneof his wins came at the Derby meeting at Epsom overa downhill track where the record stands at 536 sec-onds The explanation was that Ahonoora was the productof a mating which could have produced virtually any-thing from a sprinter to a middle-distance performerHis sire Lorenzaccio possessed the stamina to win atup to 1 38 miles (and to defeat the great Nijinsky inthe Champion S) while Ahonoora=s dam HelenNichols was a five-furlong specialist

Although Ahonoora inherited both his dam=s muscularphysique and her lack of stamina that didn=t precludethe possibility that Lorenzaccio=s influence would some-times show in Ahonoora=s offspring--especially ifAhonoora was mated to mares with stamina in theirpedigrees Ahonoora duly came up with plenty of progeny whichstayed much better than he did with Park ExpressRuby Tiger Topanoora Ahohoney Noora Abu andProject Manager among them His success brought him to the attention ofCoolmore who were no doubt attracted by his outcrosspedigree Sadly he was to die in a paddock accident inAustralia at the age of 14 Coolmore tried to replacehim with his classic winning sons Don=t Forget Me andDr Devious but neither was able to fill the void unlikethe Irish National Stud=s Indian Ridge who proved aworthy successor Dr Devious arrived at Coolmore only after he hadstarted his stallion career in Japan He disappointed inboth countries to the extent that he was sent to Italybut he was also responsible for Kinnaird a cheap year-ling who took the G1 Prix de l=Opera in 2005

Of course Collier Hill was also a cheap purchase fora mere 3000gns as a three-year-old in 2001 His damPolar Queen was also sold in 2001 for only 3500gnsso this is a true rags-to-riches story The gelding whomade his debut in a race for prospective jumping horsesin March 2002 has now earned the equivalent of overUS$4000000 Collier Hill may have been a bargain buy but he co-mes from an exceptional family His third damRoussalka was a distinguished group winner from six

furlongs to 13 miles withthe Coronation S andNassau S among her suc-cesses Roussalka wasalso a half-sister to Oh SoSharp the exceptional fillywho completed a very rareClassic treble in the 1000Guineas Oaks and StLeger Oh So Sharp laterbecame the second damof Shantou winner of the

1996 St Leger and Roussalka also has a Classic- winning descendant in her great-grand-daughterAmeerat winner of the 1000 Guineas in 2001Roussalka produced such speedy winners as GayaneShahid and Conspiracy plus the Sun Chariot S winnerRistna and Conspiracy is now the dam of the smartJedburgh As Collier Hill is a gelding the quality of his femaleline is irrelevant but it=s worth mentioning that thisbargain buy=s female line traces to those famous maresMumtaz Begum and Mumtaz Mahal
