Greek Council Update
By Danette Curiale
Hello fellow Greeks!
My name is Danette Curiale and I am the Secretary/Treasurer
for Greek Council. This is the first issue
of the Greek Pulse of the semester and I want to take the time
to let everyone know what we have planned for
the semester and how you can be involved. As a council we are working
on putting together a Google Calendar with
each chapter’s events, this way there will not be two formals on the same
day! Next, we would like to reach out to those
who are not Greek by
collaborating with other organizations on
campus, especially athletes. We would like to have more Greeks at
sporting events, like the White Out last semester.
Something that is probably on everyone’s mind is Greek Week,
which will be from March 28-April 2. There
will be more information
about Greek Week as it gets closer. Just a
reminder that everyone should be wearing their letters on the first Friday
of every month. If you would like to voice an
opinion or concern, our meetings are held every Thursday at 6 pm in the
Emeritus Chamber in Andrews.

The sisters of Chi Omega have been busy so far this semester. On January 24, 2009, they welcome seven lovely ladies in to the life of active sisterhood. Brittany Aeh, Kristina Bossi, Carm Carver, Laura Denny, Karlie Graf, Miranda Hall, and Jamie Thompson are the newest members of the Chi Gamma chapter.
After a fun season of intramural volleyball, the Hootie Hotties are back for
basketball. Twelve ladies are giving their all on the court but are more focused on having fun.
Chi Omega holds two national conventions a year for executive board members from every chapter to attend. February 6-8 was
Firesides in Memphis, TN, in which our President-Shelby Belknap and
Personnel Chair- Shayla Johnson attended. There they were able to learn more about Chi Omega and meet our national president, Letitia Fulkerson. Shayla and Shelby had a great time and cannot wait to share what they learned with the rest of their sisters.

Alpha Tau Omega’s Spotlight on
Sean McKenna By Drew Schulte
Sean Francis McKenna 2012
Hometown: Philadelphia, PA
Major/Minor: Organizational
Communication/Undeclared
Why Sean joined Greek Life: Sean
found a strong sense of
brotherhood and community in
Greek Life. He saw “going
Greek”as an opportunity to be
involved on campus in a way
different from
Marietta’s variety of
campus
organizations. To
Sean being Greek is a
great way to be
involved with the
Marietta College
community, socialize
with Greeks and non-
Greeks alike, and
enrich his overall college
experience. Sean is a
member of the Alpha
Tau Omega
Fraternity.
Future Plans: Sean
intends on
graduating in years
with a degree that
allows him to have a
career he can enjoy every day.
Random Fact: Sean has a front
tooth that grew from two teeth, it
has grown into one large tooth.
He calls it the “Saber Tooth,”ask
him about it.
Favorite Book: The World Is Flat
by Thomas L. Friedman
Sport: Rowing
Favorite Movie: Gladiator

Pretty in PanhellenicBy Jessica Christie
This semester has brought new officers and new ideas to the Panhellenic Council, and they have started it off on a good foot! The new council consists of: Kathryn Patton – PresidentMegan McGrath – VP of Recruitment DevelopmentAmanda Jeffers – VP of Recruitment GuidesJennifer Kuhn – VP of Financial & Administrative DutiesKatie Oden – VP of Judicial AffairsKristie Sigler – VP of Community DevelopmentJessica Christie – VP of Public RelationsAlex Edlebrock – Sigma Kappa DelegateSarah Hathaway – Alpha Xi Delta DelegateLeah Mendenhall – Chi Omega DelegateMichelle Finney – Sigma Kappa RepresentativeDanica Cunningham – Alpha Xi Delta RepresentativeKristina Bossi – Chi Omega RepresentativeJordan Pastor – Alpha Xi Delta New Member Representative
Before break, these fourteen women met for a workshop day. During that workshop, they got to know one another, set goals for the council for the upcoming year, and
created a vision statement: “Panhellenic Council will initiate and promote continued
community growth and service throughout campus and beyond by representing an organized front to achieve a greater sense of pride and unity.” With these guiding words, they work together to support the community that they have come to love and enjoy so much. To kick things off this semester, the Council hosted a Movie & Game Night at the end of January
to welcome back their Panhellenic sisters. The whole community met in the Gathering Place to catch up
after a long winter break and play some trivia about Disney movies. Soon after, in the first week of February, Panhellenic’s Spring Recruitment was underway. The informal open house recruitment welcomed three new members to our community. Then, in light of Valentine’s Day, Panhellenic teamed up
with Up ‘til Dawn to raise money for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital by selling Valentine’s Candy-Grams on campus. The event was a success and raised $223.17. The fundraiser was also a contest for the Panhellenic Community. The sorority with the most points (1 point for every
candy-gram sold) won a free magazine subscription for their house. The amazing winner with a total of 519 candy-grams sold was Chi Omega !!! Awesome job! The Panhellenic Council would like to thank everyone in the Greek community that participated in the Valentine’s Candy-Gram fundraiser. Your support means a lot to us!

Sister Mandy Bics Returns from Semester Abroad
By Mica Seman
Last semester, our sister
Mandy Bics studied abroad in China and has offered to share her experience with the
community:
“This last semester I studied abroad in Wuhan, China. It
was an amazing experience that definitely changed my life; much like joining Greek life
changed my life. I was able to learn about and enjoy a new
culture and see what else the world has to offer outside of Marietta College. At first I was very nervous
about leaving my family and friends and going to a country that did not
speak English, but soon after I got there I realized my Chinese was much better than I thought. Also,
it was not that hard to make friends, in some ways it was just
like being a freshman again and going through recruitment. Soon after I made friends my adventures
began and I was able to travel to several places in China.
One of the funniest times I had was the international trip to Feng
Huang (Phoenix City) and Zhang Jiajie. This was a trip where all of
the international students got to go to these beautiful mountains and
hike around them. While on this trip I was introduced to the other international students for first time
and we had a wonderful adventure! We started out on an 8 hour bus
ride not knowing one another and by the end of the bus ride we were having dance parties in the back of
the bus. The other students were from Korea, France, and
Kyrgyzstan and since I was the only American girl there I roomed
with the only girl from Kyrgyzstan. We had never really talked before, but hit it off well.
One of the most exciting parts of this trip was when we were walking
around the bottom of the mountain. We saw all of these signs that said do not disturb or
feed the monkeys, but for a while we just thought that was a
joke. Then out of no where these monkeys came down from the trees and started to follow
us. I actually walked side by side with a monkey and I do
believe that was the first time I was that close to a wild animal that was not in a cage.
Besides the fun trips I went on, I also had a very good time in
Wuhan. One of my best friends there is a Chinese girl, and her English name is Edie. I spent most
of my time with her, her American boyfriend Tyler and his friend
Erik. One night that stands out most in my mind was a night much
like any other in China. We all went to a Chinese style BBQ dinner and while we were sitting
around waiting for our food Edie looked at my shirt and said she did
not get the meaning of it. I was wearing my letters and she thought it said A san triangle. San stands
for the number three in Chinese and the character looks like three
lines on top of one another. We all just started laughing and for the rest of my time in China the guys
said I was part of the A San Triangle Sorority.

Overall I had and incredible experience and would not have
taken it back for anything. But one thing I missed the most was my sorority sisters and other friends
at Marietta. The times that I have had here have been great and
while I was in China I missed being able to go to a sisters room and just chat. That was probably
one of the hardest things I dealt with while in China because the
language barrier put so many restraints on talking with friends. I am happy to be back in Marietta
for my last semester of college, and even happier that I have a job
offer to go back to Wuhan, China and teach English. Both places will stay in my heart where ever
my life takes me and I will be happy when I can come back and
visit both as an Alumnus.”
One of our first weekends back,
our chapter welcomed the Alpha Xi Delta sisters of OU to join our
executive board in their officer training. The girls arrived on Friday evening, attended dinner
with a group from our chapter, were housed in our house and
participated in training on Saturday. It was a great experience for our chapter to have
the opportunity to interact with other collegiate Alpha
Xi Deltas and we can’t wait for them to visit again!
We’d like to recognize our sister Randi Robertson for
making First Team All OAC in indoor track & field and
our other track & field sisters, Paige Bucher, Mehgan Cline, Shannon McDonald,
Olivia Holiday, Jen Valentic, and Logan Wern for being
fabulous so far this season! The last indoor track meet at Marietta
will be on February 28, at 11
a.m. in the DBRC, so come cheer on our Pioneers!
The theater production of Jane Eyre included three of our sisters,
Liz Cardarelli, Aislynn Leeson, and Jessica “Lippy” Lipniskas, and they did a fabulous job! The soon-to-open Central Park West is directed by our newly welcomed back sister, Mandy Bics.
Coming up, on February 21, we will be holding our first formal of the semester. The formal is our annual Crush Formal and this year’s theme is based around a 60’s pop art theme. We’re excited for the experience and for the amazing shirts designed for our formal – check them out, we’ll be wearing them some time next week!
The majority of our chapter will be participating in Relay for Life
this weekend, and we hope to see you all there!

Only four weeks in the
2009 spring semester and the
Kappa Alpha chapter of Lambda
Chi Alpha already has many
exciting events to report.
After an exciting Rush
Week with events including Dodge
ball, Bowling, and others, we are
happy to report our first two new
members of the semester. The
brothers of Lambda Chi Alpha
would once again like to
congratulate Jason Fertig and
Andrew Bolton on accepting their
bids on Friday, February 6, 2009.
Jason and Andrew are juniors
majoring in Management
Information Systems and
Economics/Leadership
respectively. We hope to see great
things from our newest men.
Lambda Chi Alpha is also
proud to announce the recent
engagement of Chuck Bonakoski
and Greg “DJ” Snyder. Brothers
Bonakoski and Snyder,
sophomores, have been best
friends since their freshman year
where they lived in Mary Beach
Hall together. While news of the
engagement has come as late
breaking news, any who know the
two have seen it coming all along.
They have not yet disclosed the
location or time they plan to tie the
knot.
Lambda Chi Alpha is also
celebrating its national centennial
this year. Formed in 1909, our
fraternity has flourished into one of
the largest national men’s
organizations in the country. Now
comprised of nearly 300 chapters
and over a quarter million alumni
past and present, Lambda Chi
Alpha continues in its mission to
build college age men into stronger
individuals as they move on to the
working world.

Get to Know A Greek!
THE GREEK PULSE
When you think of an active and well known Lambda Chi on campus, few names come to mind that fulfill that
statement better than Craig Ripski. Ripski, a senior to graduate at the end of this semester, hails from
Claymont, Delaware. A double major in Leadership and Biochemistry, Craig plans to attend grad school this
coming fall, though he is undecided as to which school he will attend. In an interview he answered the following
questions: Why did you join Greek Life?
“Because I wanted to.”What’s something random most don’t know about
you? “I used to not eat red meat”
What’s your favorite book? “Number the Stars by Lois Lowry”
