PUBLIC: CELEBRATING STILL AND MOVING PICTURES

This year, the call for submissions to photographers for Greek Film and Foto Week askedto consider understanding reality through perception, taking as a starting the idea of'the image' from Plato's The Allegory of the Cave.

In the story, the Ancient Greek philosopher describes a situation where prisoners arechained to a wall in a cave, unable to turn their heads and look around. A fire burnscasting shadows of puppets that a puppeteer is holding in front of the flames. The pris-oners see only the shadows cast by the puppets, never the objects creating these im-ages. Their understanding of form and reality is based on what they see and hear.

This year the CONTACT Festival investigates public, and social and political issuesshaped by experiences of 'publicness'. The thoughtful selection of exhibitions, installa-tions and events builds a Festival that "highlights how photography shapes collectiveexperience and makes things public" – a celebration of the medium that is proven tobe able to influence our collective identity.

After an eight year career in marketing Voula Monoholias left the corporate worldto pursue her passions for photography, travel and people.

Her desire to photograph street life in cities around the world is the focus of herpractice: "I have a lot of love and intrigue for city life; how and where citizens live, their daily rituals, and interactions with each other in the public space. My photoscapture the human side and emotion of a city. It’s a visceral experience and onethat I share through photography. The street is life."

Page 5: Greek Film & Foto Week 2012

Greek Film & Foto Week 2012 brings together work by over 20 contemporary artistsof Hellenic heritage to celebrate the still and moving image.

Presented in the historic revival Burroughes Building during CONTACT, GFFW 2012is the Foundation's second annual public exhibition of artists working in a photo-based medium.

The Film presentation introduces acclaimed shorts and the feature documentaryKrisis, a 62-minute feature documentary addressing the economic crisis in Greece.

The Foto component features photographers who consider the camera image asmediator of public reality – the selection of work celebrates heritage, personalidentity, international landscapes, and stories of Greece.

Featuring prints by acclaimed Magnum Photographer Constantine Manos, and aspecial tribute to photojournalist Chris Hondros (1970-2011), works include con-ceptual projects, photojournalism, street photography and iPhoneography.

This year CONTACT Festival investigates social and political issues shaped by ex-periences of 'publicness'. Our hope is that the selection of work presents storiesintending to promote discussion about our role as public citizens.

Raised in a Greek household with strong connections to Greece, our upbringinghas been largely influenced by a lifetime of exposure to Greek culture, education, tradition and many experiences and memories.

Today as we see Greece fight through di!cult times, we are consumed with con-flicting messages of the idyllic country that many know and love. We aim to re-mind the world of the positive impact from Greece and its citizens, and continueto explore new ideas to contribute in positive, creative ways.

This exhibition is presented by the Greek America Foundation, along with Lee Poly-dor and The Burroughes Building. Thank you to Getty Images, Gregory Pappasand Despina Kreatsoulas for making this possible.

Special thanks to all photographers.

The Greek America Foundation is a non-profit organization that I founded in 1997with a mission to "promote, preserve and perpetuate the Greek culture, historyand heritage in the Americas."

With a series of publications, programs, concerts, special events and institutionalendeavors, the Foundation seeks to bring elements of Greek culture, history andheritage—also known as Hellenism—to the forefront of mainstream America, mak-ing it a relevant component of our followers' everyday life.

Our goal from the beginning has been to break stereotypes, not plates.

The ideals we espouse as an organization are central to our DNA as Greeks. Theyare core components of our heritage like innovation (kainotomia), paideia, andphilanthropia—things we often take for granted as we allow baklava and Zorba toovercome our psyche and define our character.

The Hellenic Legacy Scholarship fund sends students to Greece for full-semesterstudy abroad experiences at US-accredited academic institutions and our intern-ship program o"ers life-changing experiences to students to live and work abroadfor an entire summer, simultaneously expanding their professional networks andopportunities for personal growth. Paideia and personal growth for the youngpeople of our community is core to our mission.

The Gabby Awards (Greek America’s Best and Brightest Stars) have become oursignature event that celebrates arête (excellence) and honors individuals who havetouched their industries and those around them.

Our Forty Under 40 awards recognize young leaders from throughout NorthAmerica who not only strive for excellence in all they do, but who serve their com-munities through emphasis on philanthropy and community service.

Our National Innovation Conference is an international gathering of opinion lead-ers, business people and innovators who, together with an audience of like-

minded people, create a modern day Athenian agora where ideas are exchanged.

The Foundation also publishes Greek America Magazine, the continent’s mostwidely circulated periodical for followers of all things Greek. The magazine is pub-lished four times a year and features a diverse range of stories consistent with themission of the Foundation, as well as news and announcements for the Founda-tion's donors and supporters.

We have received broad support by thousands of donors, supporters and thosewho share our vision throughout North America, making the Greek America Foun-dation one of the most progressive and active organizations on the continent.

This festival—now in its second year and growing, was the brainchild of a founda-tion supporter from Toronto: Lee Polydor, whose vision and support have enabledthe growth of Greek Film & Foto Week into a major cultural institution. None ofthis would be possible without his personal vision and support, as well as that ofhis company, Queen Street Partners.

Furthermore, without the additional support from Dr. Marie Bountrogianni and herfamily and Manos Petrellis, this dynamic series of events that complement theweekend could not have been possible.

We are thrilled with the new relationship we are forming with the Hellenic HeritageFoundation, who are also financial sponsors of our e"orts and important partnersin what we strive to accomplish.

Finally, the people of the Greek America Foundation who donate their talents andtime to our cause is what di"erentiates us from everyone else. We have an armyof dedicated people who support this vision, including Toronto natives VoulaMonoholias and Maria Kanellopoulos who have meticulously curated this show. They have spent endless time selecting, writing, corresponding with artists andensuring that Greek Film & Foto Week is a world-class exhibition.
