10 GreeceNewsNY.com January 2016From the office of The Supervisor, Bill Reilich
I would like to wish everyone a very Happy New Year and I hope that you had a wonder-ful holiday season. The unseasonably warm weather this past De-cember has enabled the Department of Public Works to conserve our supply of road salt and also given more time for our DPW crews to continue work on drainage projects, sewer repairs and road maintenance. For further infor-mation regarding winter services provided by the Town, please visit our website, greeceny.gov.
We have a lot to look forward to in the coming year, and I am excited to share our vision for 2016. At this time last year, the new Greece Police headquarters was in its early planning stages. Within just a few short weeks, we will break ground to provide our law enforcement a much needed new facility. Other renovations that will begin shortly include the restrooms at Badgerow Park North and Badgerow Park South.
Additionally, the pickle ball courts on the Greece Town Hall campus have been converted into an ice skating rink for the winter months. The hours of operation for the rink are Monday thru Friday 3:00 P.M. – 9:00 P.M. and 10:00 A.M. – 9:00 P.M. on Saturday and Sunday. Remember, you can follow us on Facebook (facebook.com/TownOfGreece) and on Twitter (@GreeceTown) for event updates and oth-er Town related news.
As always, I enjoy hearing feedback from residents about programming and other town related issues. If you have any concerns, please do not hesitate to contact my office.
Working Greece - Lois Vine works at Carmines. Lois says this about her job, “I have not been a Greece resident my whole life, but for the 17 years Greece has been my home, I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.”Photo by Tom Parsons

Johnathan Hartmann, Eagle Scout
Eagle Scout Project Benefits CommunityJohnathan Hartmann is Boy Scout Troop 356’s newest
Eagle Scout. Johnathan is an Irondequoit resident who at-tends church at Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church on Mt. Read Blvd. in Greece.
Johnathan’s Eagle Scout Project involved giving Commu-nity Lutheran Ministries on Joseph Avenue in Rochester an interior facelift. The mission of Community Lutheran Minis-tries in Rochester is, “To minister to low-income disadvan-taged children, families and single teenage mothers, and to provide a safe haven in a loving, nurturing environment for children to grow and develop in the love of God.”
Consulting with Ms. Maggie Harris, Director of Com-munity Lutheran Ministries, and with the help of many volunteers, family and friends, Johnathan led the project by providing the overall plan and directions to all those who came to help him with the work. The materials for the project were funded by True Value Hardware Stores, Johnathan’s uncle, John Hartmann, is the CEO of True Val-ue Hardware.
The trail to becoming an Eagle Scout is long and demand-ing. Johnathan charted his own course with a vigorous push for his project combining his passion for community ser-vice with duty to his church. He achieved his goal through hard work, strong values, follow-through and compassion for others.
The pastor of Messiah Evangelical Lutheran Church in Greece is Pastor Aileen Robbins. Johnathan credits Pastor Robbins with setting an example and instilling in him the importance of serving others in all communities, near and far.
For many years Johnathan has had a passion for caring and serving others. He has participated for two summers in the Work Camp program in which he traveled to Michigan and New Jersey to help families in need with rebuilding and home projects.
He has also attend two National Youth Gatherings in which service to the community where the gatherings were held, New Orleans and Detroit, was a central focus of the week.
Jim and Tarra Hartmann are Johnathan Hartmann’s proud parents.

Historic MarkerUnveiled In Greece
On December 7, 2015, the anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, Greece Town Supervisor Bill Reilich unveiled a historic marker for an important manufacturing site of ocean-going ships for the United States Army during World War II near the corner of Dewey Avenue and Ling Road.
John H. Odenbach owned the Odenbach Shipbuilding Corporation, which broke ground in 1942. At its peak, the plant employed over 1,500 people and produced over fifty coastal tankers and derrick barges before the end of the war in 1945.
In conjunction with the sign unveiling, the Odenbach
(Left to Right) Kirk Morris, Department of Public Works Commissioner; Cassie Guthrie, Library Director; Ivana Frankenberger, De-partment of Public Works; Supervisor Bill Reilich; Deputy Supervisor Michelle Marini; Councilman Andy Conlon.
family has graciously gifted the town a large model ship that will be on display at the Greece Community and Se-nior Center. The Greece Historical Society is currently fea-turing a display of the Odenbach Shipbuilding Corporation that will be moved to the Town of Greece Library for the month of January.
“I am thrilled to be a part of commending the efforts of the Odenbach Shipbuilding Corporation on the 74th an-niversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor,” said Supervisor Reilich in a statement. “The Odenbach Shipbuilding Cor-poration played a significant role during a critical time in our nation’s history and it deserves to be recognized for its importance.”

Olympia Class of 1965 Dedicates Bench
On Saturday, November 28, 2015 members of the Greece Olympia Class of 1965, along with Kathleen Graupman, Su-perintendent of the Greece Central School District, held a dedication ceremony for a memorial bench in front of their Alma Mater in honor of all those who served in the Military.
The 1965 graduating class of Greece Olympia High School was the largest ever in the Greece Central School District’s history. Of the ap-proximately 560 students, at least 108 are Military Veter-ans with 47 of them serving in Viet Nam and one killed in action.
The project was coordi-nated by retired U.S. Army Reserve Sgt. Maj. William Sauers.
The bench was supplied by Dan Pearl of Natural Stone Works in the Town of Greece.
Alumni Gary Beikirch, a for-mer U.S. Army Sergeant and Medal of Honor recipient, wrote the text inscribed on the memorial. The inscription Gary Beikirch places flowers at the memorial.
reads, “The Class of 1965 hopes this bench will be a re-minder to current and future students of Olympia of the commitment and sacrifices of past students and an inspira-tion to them to serve their community and country.”

RAVE REVIEWS“I have one of the original Higbee’s Stream Map of Pennsylvania on my wall behind my desk. It’s the best thing available as far as streams are concerned. “It is in showing where to find out-of-the-way trout streams that makes the map such a treasure to the fisherman.”– Joe Gordon,TRIBUNE-DEMOCRAT,Johnstown, PA

LOSTSTREAM
MAP
The STREAM & LAKE MAP OF NEW YORK resembles another map - known to Pennsylvania anglers as the “Lost Stream Map.” The “Stream Map of Pennsylva-nia” was completed in 1965 after a thirty-year effort by Howard Higbee, a former Penn State Professor. Professor Higbee succeeded in creating a map of the highest detail possible...a map that shows every stream and lake. He painstak-ingly plotted by hand, the location of 45,000 miles of streams onto a 3 x 5 foot map. The map sold extremely well – until it was lost several years after it first appeared in print. Incredibly, the printer entrusted with the original drawing and printing plates declared bankruptcy, then carelessly hauled Higbee’s 30 years of work to the landfill. The few remaining dog-eared copies became a prized fisherman’s possession. Professor Higbee was offered $400 for one of his last maps. And state agencies were forced to keep their copies under lock and key. The experts had always told Professor Higbee that reprints were impossible, because the maps were printed in non-photographic blue. Then, in 1991, at the age of 91, Howard Higbee’s dream came true. Computers made it possible to reprint the map. Holding an updated map, Howard said, “I never thought I’d live to see this day.” Then, by combining Professor Higbee’s knowledge with computer technology – the STREAM & LAKE MAP OF NEW YORK was created.

GreeceNewsNY.com January 2016 25Choosing a Gym for the New YearBy Tami Mungenast, Personal Trainer and Nutrition Coach
Let’s face it, there are so many types of gyms to choose from and they are all a little bit different so it’s important to choose the right one before you sign a long term commitment.
We have gyms in our area ranging from independently owned to large franchises, women’s only facilities, bodybuilding gyms, couch potato type gyms and cross fit gyms. Finding one that you are comfortable in is the key to success with your fitness goals. If you join a gym that makes you feel uncomfortable or intimidated you are likely to give up and quit. Ensure success in your personal fitness goals by choosing a gym that can eventually feel like your second “home.”
First, think about what you are looking for in a gym. Are you there to lift weights, do cardio, take aerobic classes, nutrition workshops, personal training?
Here are some great tips to help you find your second home. Bring this list with you when you call or visit a gym you are con-sidering: • Days and Hours of operation • Busiest times of day • Showers and lockers • Costs and what does it include • Is there Certified Personal Trainers or Certified Nutrition Coaches • Aerobic classes, times and limits on sizes • Child care • Safety of the area and parking lot • Extra fees like parking, classes or hidden fees • Weight loss program options
Big considerations when choosing:Location, location, location: Make sure the facility you join is
convenient to your lifestyle. Whether it be close to your home, work or the expressway that you travel daily. It is critical that the location works for your lifestyle and getting there is not going to be an obstacle.
Atmosphere and clientele: Make sure you feel comfortable working out around the people you see in the gym. Visit the gym at the same time you would to there to work out. Some gyms are more hardcore for powerlifting, some are full of college stu-dents and younger adults. Whatever makes you more inclined to go and work out is what is important for you. Find a place that energizes you, motivates you and makes you feel comfortable. Let’s face it, you are going to a place where you will be chal-lenging your body and making it uncomfortable for the purpose of better health, you should not feel uncomfortable about the atmosphere or the people working out next to you.
Membership prices and commitments: Don’t just price shop. A $10 membership to a gym you will only go to 3 times a year is not a very good deal compared to a $29 membership to a gym you will go to 3 times a week. So although price is important, don’t let it be the biggest factor of the decision. Be sure to look at all options in membership. Short term vs long term, family mem-berships, and all the small print on the contract.
Always try a gym before deciding: Most gyms will provide you with a free day or week pass. This is the best way to get a feel for the facility, its staff, and the clientele before you make a decision. Don’t be afraid to ask lots of questions, and if you feel like you’re being “sold” without being given all of the information you need, then you need to keep looking.
A gym membership is a solid investment in your health. Good Luck and Happy Gym Shopping!

Golden Ponds Restaurant and Party Houseby Barbara Burke
Golden Ponds Restaurant and Party House is located at 500 Long Pond Road in Greece, on the site of a former horse stable and riding arena built in the 1970s. After extensive remodeling and reconstruction of the original horse farm buildings, Golden Ponds Restaurant opened in 1984.
Since opening they have continued to up-date and remodel their party rooms and added two spacious outdoor garden areas, beautiful, peaceful gardens that create the perfect setting for wedding ceremonies and celebrations.
Their Catering and Full Service Restaurant and Party Rooms are available for functions hosting up to 300 people. Golden Ponds Restaurant and Party House is available for weddings, gradua-tions, anniversaries, baptisms, showers, stag parties, any event that brings people together for fun, relaxation and enjoying good food.
Owner Ralph Rinaudo says he listens to his customers and uses their feedback in his business planning. “I have very loyal customers who come here every week for dining and the buffets. We have been doing our buffets for over 20 years and our customers really like them and appreciate that we make everything right here at our restaurant from scratch. It is important to people and they tell me that, they know that when they dine here that they are getting the freshest foods made from the finest ingredients,” Ralph said.
Golden Ponds features many delicious choices on both their buffet and sit-down menus. Their homemade Italian bread is baked fresh daily, and is a favorite with diners. They offer weekly Buffets on Wednesdays through Fridays, along with a Sunday Brunch featuring fresh, made to order
omelettes, waffles and crepes. The Wednesday night buf-fet features gourmet pizza and a fresh pasta bar, Thursday night is an Italian Buffet including homemade meatballs, fresh tripe, gnocchi and a huge selection of Italian special-ties. Friday’s Buffet is all about Seafood… Fish Fry specials and an extensive offering of seafood, including a plate of crab legs or a shrimp cocktail with your meal.
On Special Holidays Golden Ponds offers extensive Brunches and Buffets with full Dessert Tables. Holidays in-clude St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, Thanksgiving and Christmas. A New Year’s Eve Package is offered every year. Fall brings the German Oktoberfest Buf-fet featuring many German specialities such as Sauerbra-ten, Knockwurst, Bratwurst, Potato Pancakes and more.
Golden Ponds also offers various Shows and Dinner The-aters through the year including Greece Paint Players, Big Wigs, and Musical Tribute Shows.
Although Golden Ponds Restaurant and Party House mainly specializes in Italian food, throughout the year, in their restaurant and on banquet menus, they have incorporated Irish, Spanish, Mexican, and German regional dishes and cuisines. They will also consider special requests and dietary options. All menu selections are available for off premise ca-tering to your home, office parties, outdoor barbe-cues, graduations, etc. Pick up or deliver service is available.

39th Annual Greece Rotary Italian Festa Ziti Dinner
The Greece Rotary Italian Festa Ziti Dinner is scheduled for Sunday, January 31, 2016 at the Diplomat Party House, 1956 Lyell Avenue in Gates. Service will begin at 11:30 a.m. and continue to 4:30p.m. The dinner is the club’s major fundraiser, netting over $40,000 each year. Monies raised help to support the many community projects of the Club.
The first Ziti Dinner was held in 1976 at the Mother of Sorrows Church in Greece, where it served up delicious pasta for 19 years. Having outgrown the space available, the dinner was moved to the Diplomat. A true volunteer event, all Rotarians are on hand to cook and serve, greet, wait table and make new friends for the Rotary. Greece High School Interact students are also on hand to assist.
“If past year’s experience holds true this year, “said Chuck Krause, “this will be the place to be on Sunday, January 31, 2016, as we serve over 2,000 dinners. Pasta, meatballs, salad, rolls and ice cream are all included!”
Tickets are $8.00 adults, $4.00 children 5 and under. Take out orders are available for $1.00 additional charge. Tickets can be purchased from any Rotarian or at the door on the day of the event. For the first time you can also purchase your tickets online at greecerotary.org.
