We need volunteers for the fall to make our
Sunday coffee hour (10-11am) a success. What is
required? We need two volunteers each Sunday to
setup and tear down the coffee hour table and
make coffee and hot water. We also need two volunteers to
each bring in 3-4 dozen of something good to share. (cookies,

Salem Nutritional Center—Summer Schedule Mondays, July 8th & August 12th, 9:00am—2:00pm
Please join us for a morning of serving. • Meet/leave Church at 9:00 am. At 9:30, lunch prep begins. • Serving 100—150 hungry people at noon. • Return to the church at 2:00 pm. We need 10 people there each time. It is a very satisfying ministry.
In “brief” . . . thanks to your donaons, June 30 was another successful
Undie Sunday! Those undies will be combined with contribuons from the
next Undie Sunday, September 29, and delivered to six area elementary
schools (West Ridge, Holmes Road, Autumn Lane, Longridge, English Village, Brookside). We are also
accepng adult undies for the Open Door Mission and the Veterans Outreach Center. Baskets in the com-
mons area are ready to be filled up!
School’s out for summer, but September will be looming on the horizon before we know it!
Between August 11 and September 8, watch for the big boxes staoned in the commons,
ready to be filled with spiral & composion notebooks, 2-pocket folders, #2 pencils, crayons,
markers, colored pencils, rulers, erasers, backpacks, and glue scks as well as ssues, wipes,
Zip-lock bags, paper towels, and hand sanizer.
Finally, we connue our Outreach at Atria, providing a weekly Bible Study. Every Thursday,
at 10:30, two of us share scripture, stories, songs, and (oPen) goodies with a small group of
residents. Because all their hymn binders were lost as a result of a water leak, I have been
in the process of gathering hymn lyrics and clicking them into new binders I purchased at
Wal-Mart. Soon we will have our songbooks complete and ready for acon. If you think
you might be interested in joining this ministry and want to see what we do, please contact Karen Pearson
(392-3892, [email protected]).
John 15:11 These things have I spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may
be full.
Atria had a Thank-you luncheon for small
group Bible study leaders. The luncheon
was organized by the activities director,
Colleen Smith.

table, moving clockwise): Edith, Karen
Pearson, Helen Carm, Irma, Marian, Barb,

GREECE UNITED METHODIST WOMEN Executive Committee Meeting: No Executive Meeting in July. Next Executive Meeting: August 26th, 6:30 p.m. Room 9.
Gale Huber, President. Circle Meetings: Mi riam: Monday, Sept. 9th, 6:30 p.m., Room 9.
Ruth: Tuesday, Sept. 10th, 12:30 p.m., Room 9.
Strawberry Festival: Special thanks to everyone who helped make the Strawberry Festival at the Book Sale a success.
Congratulations to Joan Fowler!
Joan was recognized at the June Miriam Circle Meeting for her many years of service to our unit and our church. Joan has knitted many, many beautiful sweater sets for our Asbury Storehouse baby showers. She has worked at our bazaars, clothing sales, chicken barbeques, been an usher, assembled newsletters, etc. The list goes on. Joan’s smile and willingness to help whenever she can is something we all appreciate. We love you, Joan!
Remembering Pam Gallagher: It was decided at an Executive Committee Meeting that we would like to do something special to remember Pam Gallagher. Pam was a very active and well-liked member who passed away recently. We thought that it would be appropriate to offer an opportunity to everyone to donate, as a group, to the church Memorial Fund in her memory. This donation will be in addition to the $30 that is given when a member passes away. If you would like to donate in her memory, please write your check payable to “Greece UMW” and give it to Sharon Neary, our treasurer, by July 31. She will then make out one check payable to the church in the amount of the total donations. Along with Pam’s family, we will then decide on an appropriate gift to the church. Save the Dates: Men’s Breakfast: Saturday, Sept. 28th, 9:00 a.m., Fellowship Hall GVD Annual Meeting: Saturday, October 5th, at Fairport UMC. Rev. Deanna Finch will be our guest speaker.
*** No General Meeting in October. ***
HOORAY!! After several delays, our home building is about to begin. At the website for Flower City Habitat, volunteer days are now open for online scheduling. In the past, volunteering had to be worked through a coordinator in our coalition but now individuals can go on and book ½ days or full days Tuesdays (only ½ days) through Saturdays for themselves or for a group of 3, beginning July 16th. The website address is www.rochesterhabitat.org. Our lot has changed when we were asked to switch to 126 Holworthy rather than 120 which was a bigger lot that was needed for space for a ramp.
We continue to raise funds and are moving in the right direction towards an 8th home in the future. Please call or contact me if you have any questions about the volunteering or any other aspect of this project.

Habitat for Humanity
Thoughts from Lisa Kostyshak
Nobody says, “Give me the mediocre life. Give me the lousy life.” Everybody wants to experience the good life. Going back to the ancient Greeks, philosophers have argued that the good life should be our aim. Hedonism was the philosophical school that articulated this view. Hedonists believed that the chief purpose of human life is to experience as much pleasure as possible and to minimize pain. Today it is widely accepted in our culture that pleasure is the path to the good life. There also is a common assumption that if you can accumulate material possessions, if you have enough wealth, and if you can save enough for retirement, you will experience the good life that everyone wants. My wife makes delicious chocolate chip cookies, and I love eating them when they are warm, just out of the oven. The first three or four are delicious. But the more I eat, the less I enjoy them. And if I eat a dozen warm cookies, rather than feeling satisfied, I’ll actually feel sick to my stomach. In the same way, a focus on the acquisition of more money and possessions does not lead to satisfaction; sometimes it just leaves us feeling sick. The writer of the Book of Ecclesiastes in the Old Testament, who identifies himself simply as the Teacher, understood this. As he looked back on his life, the Teacher explained that he had tried to fill his life with every pleasurable experience. Only afterward did he realize that it was all meaningless. He had been “chasing after wind” (2:11). It seems that people today continue to miss this lesson. I read about a recent study involving 120 people who, on average, earned $25 million per year. These multimillionaires were asked questions about such things as whether they thought they had enough, if they felt secure, and if they were experiencing the good life based upon their standards of living. The consistent answer to these questions was no. Next, the millionaires were asked, “How much more income would you need to have in order to feel like you were secure?” And the average answer was that if they could have 25 percent more—which works out to about $6.25 million more each year—they would finally feel secure and satisfied. For those of us who don’t have annual incomes in the millions, the answers in this survey may seem absurd. We would enjoy the challenge of finding satisfaction on a $25 million annual budget. But that’s just chasing after the wind on a bigger scale.
The Unhappiness Report
As we look back on the past fifty years in the United States, in much the same way the Teacher in Ecclesiastes reflected on his own experience, we can see what has happened when people have tried the counterfeit path to the good life. During the past five decades, the gross domestic product of the United States per person has roughly increased by a factor of two. Americans’ standard of living has gone up dra-matically. The average new home fifty years ago was one-third the size of an average new home today. Yet studies say that we are actually three percent less happy than we were fifty years ago. Clearly, having more wealth and more possessions hasn’t led to more satisfaction in our lives. Every year since 2012, the United Nations has issued a study called the “World Happiness Report.” They survey thousands of people in fifty different countries, attempting to find out how happy people are in those countries and what factors make them happy. In that very first report, the United States ranked twen-ty-third. In terms of overall happiness with their lives, the people of the wealthiest nation in the world ranked behind a number of much less prosperous nations, including Malaysia, Tanzania, Indonesia, Andorra, Thai-land, Vietnam, and El Salvador. In subsequent years the United States has moved up a few spots in the happiness rankings, but we’re still nowhere near the top. In 2016 I read an article written by a very successful entrepreneur and was struck by what she said: “At the height of my success I was actually pretty miserable. I’m not saying there’s an inverse relationship between success and happiness, just that there’s not necessarily a positive one. They are two very differ-ent things.” Achieving success is not the same as achieving happiness or experiencing the good life. Where do we turn after we realize that success is not the same as happiness? Maybe we need to redefine what the good life means.

LIVING THE GOOD LIFE

traffic during July and August 2019. People coming from the west will need to go past
Long Pond to Fetzner Road, proceed to Maiden Lane and then come back to the
church.
