Introduc2onWELCOMEThankyouforconsideringjoiningourJuly14–25,2017teamtohelpserverefugeesinGreece.Theworldwiderefugeecrisisishuge,butyoucanmakeadifferenceasyoustepforwardtorepresentthehandsandheartofChristtothosewhohavelostsomuch.

Asyouprayandprepareforthisopportunity,pleasekeepinmindthattherefugeesituationinGreece,andaroundtheworld,isveryVluid.Ever-changingneeds,numbers,events,strikesandgovernmentregulationscanre-directandevensidelinethebestlaidplans.ExtraordinaryVlexibilityandpatiencewillberequiredonyourbehalf;ifyouneedthingstogoaccordingtoplan,pleasereconsiderapplyingforthistrip.

BACKGROUNDOnthistrip,wewillbeservingamongrefugeesinAthens,Greece.Duetoitsgeography,GreeceisaprimarypointofentryforrefugeesVleeingwarsandVightingacrosstheMiddleEastandAfrica.

MostoftherefugeesinGreecearrivefromTurkeyfollowingaverydangerouscrossingoftheseaininVlatablerafts.ThisrouteisofViciallyclosed,yetthesea-crossingisshortbutverydangerous.Refugeespaylargesumsofmoneytosmugglerstohelpthemgetacross.ManyarefromSyria,IraqorAfghanistan,buttheycomefromplacesasfarawayasBangladesh,NorthAfrica,Congo,andeventheDominicanRepublic.

Somerefugeescomefromprofessionalurbanbackgrounds,somecomefromruralpoorareas.SometookaplanetoTurkey,otherswalkedoverlandforweeksormonths.Manyhavelostclosefamilymembers,andallhavelosteverythingtheyknewandlovedabouthometoVindasafeplacetolive.AgreatdocumentaryVilmyourshouldwatchasyourconsiderandprepareforthistripisExodus.

Over50,000refugeesarecurrentlystuckinAthens.MostwanttoVindnewhomesinplaceslikeGermanyorSweden,butbecauseofincreasingrestrictionsbypotentialhostcountries,mostfacethehardchoiceofeitherbeingsentbackhomeorapplyingforasyluminGreece,-acountryalreadyundermucheconomicstrainwithlimitedjobopportunity.

WHATWILLWEBEDOING?Duringthisproject,wewillpartnerwithaGreekchurchthatrunsanumberofsheltersandday-centersforrefugeesinAthens.ThepeopleofGreecehavedonean

outstandingjobofwelcominganoverwhelmingtideofrefugees,anditisourhonorandprivilegetogovolunteerastheirhelpers.

Thewomenvolunteersonthisteamwillserveeachdayatashelterforrefugeemomsandtheirkids,-asafeplacewheretheycancomeduringtheday,bathe,washtheirclothes,lettheirkidsplay,drinksometeaandmeetnewfriends.Volunteerswillassistwithbasichostingactivitiesandhelppermanentstaffwithongoingmaintenanceandcleaningtasks.

Themenvolunteersonthisteamwillhelpwithmaintenance,painting,lightconstructionandrooftopgardeningtasksatashelterservingunaccompaniedminors.Manyyoungmenlosttheirentirefamiliestowarandaretravelingalone,whileothersmaybetheonlyonetheirfamilycouldaffordtosendtoseeksafetyinEurope.Alongtheway,therearemanywhotrytotakeadvantageoftheirsituation,andthisshelterworkstoprovideasafeplaceforthemtolivewhiletheyareinAthens.
