Jamaat leader in Bangladesh sentenced to death Dhaka, July 17: A top leader of the Jamaat-e-Islami party was sentenced to death today by a special Bangladeshi tribunal for committing "crimes against humanity" and unleashing ruthless mili- tias on unarmed intellectuals during the country's 1971 liberation war. Ali Ahsan Mohammad Mojaheed, secretary general and second-highest ranked official of Jamaat-e-Islami party was given death penalty by the Interna- tional Crimes Tribunal-2, two days after the Islamic party's 91-year-old supremo Ghulam Azam was sentenced to 90 years in jail. The verdict sparked violence on the streets as supporters of Jamaat clashed with police, with five people killed a countrywide strike since Monday to protest the ongoing trial of Islamists. "He will be hanged by neck till he is dead," Justice Obaidul Hassan, the chairman of the three-member panel of judges pronounced, reading out the operative part of the verdict in a jam- packed courtroom here. Justice Hassan said five of the seven charges brought against Moja- heed were "proved beyond doubt" and the court sentenced him to death on two counts for personal involvement in the killings of several pro-liberation activists. Reacting angrily to the judgement, 65-year-old Mojaheed said the verdict was "100 per cent injustice" and recited a verse from the Koran. "I am cent per- cent innocent," he said standing in the dock. Mojaheed's lawyers said they would challenge the "inappropriate" judgement at the Supreme Court. Mojaheed was the second in com- mand of the infamous Al Badr militia forces, manned mainly by Jamaat's then student wing. Al Badr had systematical- ly killed leading Bengali intelligentsia during the liberation war and acted as an elite auxiliary force of the Pakistani troops. Mojaheed was found guilty of "supe- rior responsibility" and "criminal liabil- ity" of the atrocities. The judgement said it found valid the allegations that Mojaheed was per- sonally involved in systematic persecu- tion of the Hindu community. The tribunal said, Mojaheed ordered the murder of leading journalist Sira- juddin Hossain and instigated a Paki- stani military officer to torture and kill several prominent figures, including famous musician Altaf Mahmud and freedom fighter Rumi. Security forces whisked Mojaheed away from the dock after the verdict was delivered. This was the sixth verdict in the sensational war crimes trial. Meanwhile, Jamaat called for a nationwide strike tomorrow to protest the sentencing. PTI Practice of receiving federal ministers at Kohala draws flak TARIQ NAQASH Muzaffarabad, July 17: AJK Prime Minister Chaudhry Abdul Majeed has asked five members of his cabinet to receive Federal Minister for Kashmir affairs Birjees Tahir at Kohala bridge on his maiden visit to the capital, in a move that drew flak from opposition and civil society. While minister for school education Mian Abdul Waheed, minister for college education Matloob Inqilabi, minister for food Javed Iqbal Bhudanvi and minister for works Chaudhry Muhammad Rasheed garlanded the fed- eral minister at Kohala after waiting for him for about 30 minutes, minister for information Bazil Ali Naqvi waited and received the VIP guest near Ambore tunnel along with around two dozen people. Highly placed sources confided to Greater Kashmir that chief secretary Alam Din Bullo was not in favour of sending the cabinet members to Kohala to receive the federal minster. Instead, he had suggested that the deputy commis- sioner and SSP should receive the guest at Kohala and he (CS) and other officials would greet him at the entrance of a 5-star hotel here, where the AJK prime minister had arranged an iftar dinner in his honour. However, sources said, Prime Minister Majeed did not agree with the suggestion and directed the designated min- isters to reach Kohala with garlands to welcome the federal minister of the recently installed PML-N government. The unprecedented reception however sent a shock wave among the civil society as well as political leaders who said it amounted to “undermining the status of the AJK government.” “A simple humiliation of already humil- iated government. Even (the federal) minister himself should have taken notice of this unusual reception,” said former Prime Minister and opposition Muslim Conference president Sardar Attique Ahmed Khan in a text message to this correspondent. Even the PML-N AJK chapter president and leader of the opposition in AJK assembly Raja Farooq Haider was not happy with this development. “Azad Kashmir is back in 1950’s,” he told Greater Kash- mir. His terse but thoughtful comment was a reference to an alleged practice of 1950’s when the AJK president(s) used to receive the joint secretary of federal ministry of Kashmir affairs at Kohala. The practice came to end when legendary K H Khurshid became the AJK president in late 50’s. PML-N’s senior vice president Chaudhry Tariq Farooq MLA was also aghast at what he said ‘shameful act on the part of the AJK government.’ “The AJK government wants to hush up its corruption and hoodwink the federal government with such acts of puffery,” he remarked. Interestingly some ruling People’s Party leaders had also erected billboards in the civil secretariat area with welcoming slogans for the visiting federal minister. Shaukat Javid Mir, one of the official spokesmen, shrugged off criticism against the reception and main- tained that the PP government had demonstrated its “tra- ditional hospitality” notwithstanding difference of political ideologies. But there were little takers of the official stance. Shams Rehman, a UK based Kashmiri community leader maintained that there was nothing wrong in showing some courtesies but meanings changed when relationship was not equal. The federal minister is scheduled to meet various people and attend some briefings here on Wednesday before returning to Islamabad the same evening. Midday meal tragedy in Bihar 22 kids die Chapra/Madhubani, July 17: The midday meal death toll in Bihar's Saran district rose to 22 with two more children falling victims today after consumption of free food sparking violent protests amid suspicions by the state government it was poisoned. In a related incident, about 50 students of a government middle school in Madhu- bani district fell ill after eating food under the midday meal scheme. The food was served to children of Nav- tolia Middle School, Bisfi, about 22 km from Madhubani, amid allegations by the stu- dents that a dead lizard was found in the meal. "The oil used to cook the vegetables was foul-smelling. Doctors found the presence of organic phosphorus in the food and vomit. It means the children were poisoned," Bihar education minister P K Shahi told reporters in Patna. Shahi did not rule out foul play and said investigations will determine whether the poisoning was accidental or deliberate. As the tragedy sparked a political blame game, Shahi also alleged a political conspira- cy against the state government. "Principal Meena Kumari's husband is close to a political leader," he said. Shahi suspected the poisoning to be caused by insecticides in vegetable or rice. Union HRD Minister Pallam Raju said an FIR has already been lodged against the school principal. The "food has turned killer", screamed a woman whose two sons were among the vic- tims, as a pall of gloom hung over Dandaman village. While 16 children, aged below 10 years and studying in Class I to V, had died in Chhapra itself, four others were declared dead on arrival at Patna Medical College Hospital (PMCH) late last night. Two died at the hospital this morning, official and PMCH sources said. Twenty five others are under medical supervision in PMCH, Superintendent of PMCH Amarkant Jha Azad said. There were emotional scenes as children, their limbs dangling and heads drooping to one side, were brought to a hospital. The tragedy took place at the gov- ernment primary school in Dahrmasati Gandawan village at Mashrakh block, about 25 km from Chhapra and 60 km from Patna yesterday. Police said that during the violent pro- tests three police vehicles were damaged by agitators during a bandh call in Saran district over the deaths. PTI Taliban urge Malala to come back, join madrassa Islamabad, July 17: Days after Malala Yousufzai made a passionate appeal at the UN for the education of children, the Taliban today asked the teenage activist to return to Paki- stan and join a madrassa in the restive northwest. Adnan Rashid, a Tali- ban fighter wanted for an attempt to assassinate former President Pervez Musharraf, wrote a letter to Malala, who was shot in the head in a militant attack last year. "I advise you to come back home, adopt the Islamic and Pashtun culture, join any female Islamic madrassa near your hometown, study and learn the book of Allah, use your pen for Islam and the plight of Muslim ummah and reveal the conspiracy of the tiny elite who want to enslave the whole humanity for their evil agendas in the name of a new world order," Rashid wrote. The over 2,000-word letter was dated July 15 but it was not immediate- ly clear from where it was issued. It was released to the media today. Rashid, a former air force personnel, tried to justify the attack on 16-year-old Malala by claiming that she was involved in an "anti-Tali- ban campaign". "Taliban never attacked you because of going to school or you were an education lover; also please mind that Tal- iban or mujahideen are not against the education of any men or women or girls," he wrote. "Taliban believe that you were intentionally writing against them and running a smear campaign to malign their efforts to establish Islamic system in Swat and your writings were provocative," he added. PTI Modi hired American ad agency for image building: Congress PRESS TRUST OF INDIA Jaipur, July 17: Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has hired an Ameri- can advertisement agency for image building ahead of coming Lok Sabha polls, AICC representative Prem Chandra Mishra said today. "This is for sure that the RSS is not behind Modi's pub- licity and image building pro- cess," Mishra, appointed as AICC special representative on Food Security Ordinance's publicity, told reporters here. Modi has hired an Ameri- can advertisement agency for image makeover for upcom- ing Lok Sabha elections, he said. "The same American advertising agency has been working for Israeli govern- ment," Mishra said adding "let Modi say whether it is true or false". On the Food Security Ordinance, Mishra said the state governments would implement the scheme within six months for which the Centre would provide transportation, storage, and financial help. To a question, he said the Congress never tried to take any political mileage out of social sector schemes. The UPA government was determined to erdicate hunger and malnourishment by providing high quality food to the poor at affordable prices, Mishra said. Govt wakes up to MERS threat, asks states to keep vigil New Delhi, July 17: With the spread of the SARS-like Middle East coronavirus in many countries, the Centre has asked all states for increasing surveillance and keeping a close vigil on those travelling to Gulf nations. Middle East Respira- tory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS-CoV) can cause fever, coughing and pneumonia. It is related to Severe Acute Respi- ratory Syndrome (SARS) and its symptoms are also similar to H1N1 or Swine flu. The virus has already killed more than 45 people across the world and its impact is more visible in the middle east countries. The largest number of deaths have taken place in Saudi Arabia. It has sparked fears of a SARS- like outbreak in Asia which left 800 people dead in 2003. So far, no case of MERS has been reported in India. In a circular issued to all states, the Health Ministry has said that the virus has become a global threat and patients with travel history to the Middle East, China and Taiwan who show signs of respiratory discomfort should be reported and kept under surveillance.
