Climate/WeatherThe changing of the seasons and the variety ofweather make Greater Mankato an interesting placeto live and visit. July is the hottest month of the year,with a high temperature averaging 83 degreesFahrenheit and the low averaging 61 degrees. Thereare approximately 15 days when the temperatureexceeds 90 degrees. January is typically the coldestmonth of the year, with an average hightemperature of 23 degrees and average low of 2degrees. Greater Mankato receives its share ofprecipitation, with an average of 33 inches annually.

It is thesite of the largest mass executionin U.S. history where 38 DakotaIndians were hanged by thegovernment in 1862. Tom Millersculpted the buffalo from a 67-tonblock of local Kasota limestone; itis surrounded by native flowersand prairie grasses. The buffalosymbolizes the spiritual survival ofthe Dakota People and honors theDakota heritage of this area. Thepark is a site to reflect, meditateand remember.Union School200 N. Broad Street, Mankato E-6The original seat of education inMankato sits on Broad Streetbetween Mulberry and Plum. Onthis site there have been no lessthan three school buildings. Thebuilding is now preserved as anoffice building.Post Office401 S. Second Street, Mankato E-6The Post Office was built in 1895 andremodeled in 1933 to the structureseen today. It is constructed ofMankato Kasota stone. The secondfloor was used for Federal offices andcourts.
Mankato was originally named “Mahkato” (meaning greenish-blue earth) by its early inhabitants, the Dakota.Mankato is located at the confluence of the Minnesota and Blue Earth Rivers. In 1852, Parsons K. Johnsonand Henry Jackson staked claims along these banks and founded the town of Mankato. The city wasestablished on land purchased in a treaty between the U.S. government and the Dakota; breaking of thistreaty by the government lead to the U.S.-Dakota Conflict of 1862. North Mankato, which sits just acrossthe river, was established in 1898. The first bridge between North Mankato and Mankato was the VeteransMemorial Bridge constructed in 1880, representing an interdependence and partnership between the citiesthat still continues. Today, many memorials and buildings exist to commemorate the diverse and importanthistory that has shaped the Greater Mankato area. Lincoln Park200 Lincoln Street, Mankato F-6Lincoln Park was a gift to Mankatofrom John H. Ray in the 1890s. In1893, a bronze statue of a CivilWar union soldier atop a fountainwas added to the park. Thefountain and statue were replacedby a stone tablet honoring CivilWar veterans in 1935. In 1900, aSpanish American War cannonwas dedicated as a memorial. TheLincoln Park neighborhood waslisted on the National Register ofHistoric Places in 1995. It is one ofthe most intact late 19th and 20thcentury residential neighborhoodsin outstate Minnesota. This neighborhood also includes ofthe childhood home of beloved children’s author, Maud Hart LovelaceCray Mansion603 S. Second Street,Mankato F-6Judge Loren Cray built this housefor his wife Lulu in 1897, at thecost of $13,000. One of Mankato’snoted architects, Frank Thayer,prepared the plans for the house.The structure is of Chaska buffbrick, with pink rock-faced graniteused at the base of the building. Afull-height circular corner towerdominates the house which wasbuilt for entertaining. There werethree guest bedrooms and aballroom on the third floor. (Noinside tours available)Betsy-Tacy F-6332 Center Street, Mankato F-6The Betsy-Tacy Society has spentthe past decade preserving thelegacy of Maud Hart Lovelace(1892-1980), beloved author ofthe famed children’s series ofBetsy-Tacy books. The author isthe real-life character of “Betsy”and the books are historical fictionbased on her childhood memoriesof growing up in Mankato, thefictionalized “Deep Valley.” Tacy’sHouse serves as societyheadquarters, gift shop andinterpretive center. Betsy’s houseis in the process of restoration toits original condition. Rensselaer D. Hubbard built this house in 1871. It is constructed of brick and wood on a basement ofcut stone. The main house is three stories with a Mansard roof of colored slate shingles. During theremodel, the servants’ quarters, fireplaces, a bay window and office were added and all the woodworkwas replaced. The house was described as one of the finest homes in Mankato. It had one of the firsttelephones, indoor plumbing, electricity and the most modern conveniences of the time.

The mill wasoperated until 1890 and wasconstructed almost entirely oflocal building materials.Le Sueur FortHwy. 66. MankatoThis fort, located off of Highway 66in Judson, is the presumed locationof the trading post built by Frenchexplorer Charles Le Sueur and hisparty in 1700. Le Sueur was a furtrader who was also searching forcopper ore to send to France.After he left, local NativeAmericans burned down the post.A mound rises to the right of theplaque that marks the site.Red Jacket Bridge and Mill SiteHwy. 66, MankatoThe railroad and highway crossingat the Le Sueur River has beenboth a railway and highway bridgesince at least the 1870s. Therailroad bridge still standing datesto the 1870s, but the highwaybridge was rebuilt in the 1960s.Since the 1970s, the railroad trestlehas been used as part of the RedJacket Trail. The Red Jacket flourmill was located downstream fromthis point in the late 19th century.Treaty Site History Center1851 N. Minnesota Avenue,St. PeterThe Center sits near “thecrossing”used by the Dakota andFrench fur traders. For centuries,this fordable spot was a naturalgathering point for many differentcultures. In 1851, the Treaty ofTraverse des Sioux was signedhere between the United Statesand the Dakota people. E. St. Julien Cox House500 N. Washington Avenue,St. PeterThe Cox House is an architecturalmarvel, as well as home to one ofSt. Peter’s most prominentresidents. The home was built in1871 for E. St. Julien Cox, a CivilWar officer, attorney, St. Peter’sfirst mayor, state senator, andeventually district court judge. Itwas added to the National Registerof Historic Places in 1970 and isone of the best examples of neo-Gothic Italianate architecture inMinnesota.Harkin Store6620 County Road 21, New UlmSavor the smells and sights of an1870s general store as you samplethe wares or try a game ofcheckers. Chat with the costumedstaff or sit on the porch andenvision a steamboat plying theriver below. The store was forcedto close when the railroad passedby the small town of WestNewton; much of its unsoldinventory remained on its shelves.Harkin Store is managed by theNicollet County Historical Society.

Sakatah Singing Hills Trail C-8Follow 39 miles of abandoned railroad grade fromMankato (the trail begins on Lime Valley Road, justpast the intersection of Riverfront Drive and Hwy.14) to Faribault. The blacktopped trail meandersthrough rich farmland and small towns and followsseveral lakes, including Madison and Cannon, wherethere are swimming beaches. There are parks andrest stops in communities every few miles. The trail,which intersects Sakatah State Park, is open forbiking, hiking, in-line skating and cross country skiing.Red Jacket Bike Trail G/H-5The Red Jacket Trail begins at Rasmussen Park inMankato and travels about 13 miles through opencountryside, beside the Minnesota River and overthree railroad trestles (including its namesake, the550-foot-long Red Jacket) to Rapidan. Severalwooden bridges and a landmark tunnel under thenew southern bypass add charm to the trail.Minnesota River Trail E-6Follow the Minnesota River on bike, foot or in-lineskates from Veteran’s Memorial Bridge at LindStreet in North Mankato, through downtownMankato to Sibley Park in west Mankato.Seven Mile Creek Trail Just three miles north of Mankato on Hwy. 169,you’ll find seven miles of hiking trails that cover 600acres of wooded park.
