The Advanced Professional Performance(2nd Year of the 2yr/3yr Course)

Aim:The aim of the ‘Licentiate Advanced’ year(s) is toground the student’s stage craft with regularperformance platforms, deepen their appreciationof performance with textual studies, secure theirunderstanding of the industry so that they areready to enter the profession and to encouragecreative individuality so that they stand out fromthe crowd.

Students will continue to take regular techniqueclasses - some of which will be mixed with ‘associ-ates’. This is in order for the Aelfa students tocontinue to sustain the Aelfa Company, as well asworking as separate study groups.

‘Licentiate’ students are encouraged to ALL studythe ‘PERFORMANCE ART’ exam specification as itallows more freedom of creativity in the practicalexam content without being removed from thestudents major discipline. The actor can maketheir exam performance more acting focused, thephysical performer more movement focused andthe musical theatre student more musical theatrefocused.

Term One: Rep Season One

• Production One -Devised Performance Project

(Students must focus their role on theirmajor discipline area)

• Production Two -The Classics

(This could include Shakespeare, Greek,Marlowe, Restoration)

The Foundation in Professional Performance(1yr Course or 1st Year of Advanced Study)

Aim:The aim of the ‘associate foundation’ year is toexpose students to ‘The Craft’ - skills they willneed in order to become a professional performer.‘Associate’ students will take all subject areas inorder to fill the ‘Performers Toolbox’, howeverthere will always be a strong focus on actingtechnique.

Term One: Learn Your SkillsTerm one is all about technique. All classes will befocused in -

• Neutralising bad performance habits• Introducing technique with in-depth understand-ing of the mechanics of the practice• Assessing progression

Term Two: Refine Your SkillsTerm two allows the student to continue withtechnique whilst refining skills learnt by applyingthem to performance opportunities -

• Continued and extended technique in all areas• Begin work on the solo exam content• 2 Performance Projects - covering all perform-ance disciplines• Stage Management of 2nd Year Production

Term Three: Qualify Your SkillsTerm three is focused on student exam work andis qualified during July by Trinity College London.

• Stage and rehearse exam work• Continue with technique classes• Take the ‘Associate’ Diploma exam in July andperform exam work in an in-house showcase

Qualification by the end of 1 year:Associate Trinity College London Diploma (Level4) - equivalent to a foundation degree year -100% Practical.

All performance exam work is performed ina studio showcase during the final week ofthe academic year.

**The written exam units can be takenduring the 2nd year of study with additionalhours of study. However, in most casesstudents spend a full 3 years to pass their‘Licentiate Diploma’ by rolling the writtenexam units into the final year, known as the‘Career Year’ or WEX year**

3rd yr Advanced Career Year or WEXThe focus of Aelfa’s 3rd year of WEX study is ‘The Industry’and is highly beneficial for all students as it enables themto launch their careers successfully with the continuedsupport of the academy. This is a very unique opportunitythat no other drama schools offer.

To be a successful actor/performer you need to be able to:

� Create your own performance work� Promote yourself and secure auditions� Display alternative skills that are suitable for alter-

native employment roles in the world of theatre� Be able to share your skills and knowledge effec-

tively� Keep your stage craft polished and up to date

The 3rd year is designed to support all of these needs -throughout the year students will participate in activitiessuch as:

� Work Experience Placements with a professionaltheatrical establishment

� Help to run the Academy Agency� Drama Coaching - assisting 1st years with exam

rehearsals� Continued Technique Classes, Performances and

take Written Exam Units

Post-Grad/Masters ‘Fellowship’ inProfessional Performance or Directing

This course is suitable for anyone who has had a tradi-tional university education in a performance subject andwishes to focus time on developing their professionalperformance or directing skills whilst gaining a level 7qualification.

Fellowship students work as an integral part ofthe Aelfa Theatrical Company and shape their craftalongside 2nd & 3rd Year ‘Advanced’ students. However,Fellowship students are required to apply a deeper levelof analysis of the process. This deeper investigativeprocess enables the ‘Fellowship’ student to aid and workmore closely with the academy directors, by taking onthe responsibilities of Assistant Directors, Assistant Per-formance Coaches as well as taking on highly challenginglead roles, professional work and development of theirown performance material for a public audience.

It is also essential that a Fellowship studentparticipates in a professional work experience placementduring the course, that satisfies their main focus andsupports them in building an effective career connection.

The duration of the ‘Fellowship’ requires 1-2yrs of study.Depending on the students requirements. There arelimited spaces for these course placements (2-3 per year)

Film Company - Patchwork Owl Productions

Trinity College London and the QualificationsThe qualifications (ATCL, LTCL and FTCL): are diplomas rather than traditional UK degrees as they are qualificationsthat can be studied internationally, as well as being vocational in their nature. The National Qualification Framework(NQF) grade both qualifications at degree levels, as stated earlier in this prospectus.

Trinity College London: itself is one of the countries finest music, drama and performance colleges. Although TrinityCollege London is a performance college like RADA or London Studios, it has university status and is a leadingestablishment in providing accredited qualifications for external professional colleges and academies - like ourselves.Meaning those who gain a Trinity Performance Diploma are deemed as holding a highly respectable qualification.

Graduation: On graduating from Aelfa Academy of Dramatic Arts students are also receiving their professional diplomaand graduating from Trinity College London. All successful diploma students are entitled to wear Trinity CollegeGraduation Colours/Gown.

Aelfa’s very own theatrical Agency - representation for allfull-time students (2nd Year Students Upwards) and se-lected part-time students.

Aelfa Associates Theatrical Agency provides all studentswith a smoother route into the industry by seeking workopportunities in TV, Film and Theatre. Whilst the studentis in training, the agency will provide ‘sole’ representation.This is then free to change to a ‘non-exclusive’ arrange-ment once the student graduates or for the graduate to befreed from the agency in order to sign with another agent.

The agency also owns its own theatrical company called:

Aelfa Centauri Theatre CompanyAll those who are represented by the agency are free toaudition for all Aelfa Centauri Professional Productionsand Tours.

External LondonTheatre Showcase

Aelfa Associates will also prepare a London Showcase foragents, casting directors and professionals to attend for alladvanced students who successfully complete the‘Career/Work Experience Year 3’ as well as for members ofAelfa Centauri Theatre Company.

Acting for Screen with ‘Patchwork Owl Productions’Aelfa Academy of Dramatic Arts is fortunate enough to have professional film and media company ‘Patchwork OwlProductions’ housed within the academy.

Patchwork Owl’s professional team work closely with 2nd & 3rd years providingexpert tuition in the art of film making and acting for screen. In today’s industry thelargest concentration of professional work is in Film & Television. Therefore it isessential that our students understand and are equipped for this niche area ofperformance. During their training students will cover:

SE25 - Home of AelfaAelfa is resident at the well renowned ‘Stanley Halls’ in SouthNorwood. South Norwood (SE25) is located in London’s mostpopulous borough - Croydon, a vibrant urban centre with a livelymodern feel and only a mile from the artist hub and famousCrystal Palace triangle. Our location has something for every-one, shopping, theatre, music, entertainment, restaurants,pubs, nightclubs, heritage and parks and open spaces.

Travel:South Norwood is an ideal base for exploring London and SouthEast England with excellent public transport and road links. Bytrain, Central London is just 15 minutes. Making London’sWestend Theatreland highly accessible for all our performancestudents. Whilst in the opposite direction, Brighton can bereached in under an hour. The advantage of our location, inCroydon’s heart, is that commuting to Aelfa Academy of Dramat-ic Arts can be done with ease from North, South, East and Westby Car, Train, Tram or Bus.

For this reason many of our students who live within a LondonBorough or the home counties, commute from home. Which inturn reduces living expenses.

You can reach Aelfa Academy of Dramatic Arts easily by takinga train to Norwood Junction Station and then a 5 minute walkto the halls.

Shopping:Croydon is one of the largest retail spaces outside of CentralLondon, with two shopping centres, the Whitgift ShoppingCentre and Centrale, combined with a range of superstores onPurley Way, providing an exciting range of fashion and lifestylebrands to all.

The Stanley Halls:The Stanley Halls was built in 1906 by Sir William Stanley. Hispassion for the arts and invention inspired him to build a centrethat would encourage creative minds to grow and develop in thesubject of their hearts desire. Aelfa Academy of Dramatic Arts isin permanent residency at the halls, benefiting from it’s studios,300 seater theatre, coffee shop, gallery and in house cinema.

As The Stanley Halls is also a professional theatre rehearsal andproduction venue, and not a typical college/school environment,which encourages Aelfa students to learn how to conductthemselves in a mature and professional fashion, most suited totheir future professional careers. As well as the opportunity tobe a part of the working theatre in numerous areas frombackstage, front of house, production assistant and so on…

Living in Croydon:Aelfa Academy of Dramatic Arts does not provide housing orhalls of residence for students and it is not the academy’sresponsibility to arrange housing for its students. However, ifour students wish to move to the Croydon Borough or any of theboroughs that border it, the Aelfa Directors will endeavour togive each student the most suitable advice regarding - suitableareas to live, rental amounts, trusted letting agencies andpossible room lets. Popular areas include - South Croydon,Purley, Coulsdon, all Bromley areas and Sutton.

What Next?

Funding a Course:Fees can be paid by the following methods -

1. Full fees up front at the start of each academic year2. Staggered payments Termly or Half Termly3. Monthly Payment Schemes 12 to 24 months4. Personal Bank Loan5. Fund Raising Schemes6. Professional and Career Development Loans

The Professional and Career Development Loan is effec-tively a student loan issued by a commercial bank ratherthan the government. Students can apply for £300 to£10,000 to help pay for a course that is specificallydesigned to train individuals for a profession. Whilst thestudent is training, The Skills Funding Agency pay for theinterest on the loan.

Training Days and Hours:The academy’s main training hours total 28 hours+ perweek / 3 Terms of 12 weeks.

Monday to Thursday10am till 6pm

Timings of the day can vary slightly depending onproduction details and time-tabling

Fees, Funding and Training HoursAelfa is proud to continue to sustain its independent statusas an educational establishment, as it allows the academyto retain its unique vocational training methods. However,this does mean that Aelfa students are not eligible fortraditional government issued student loans.

For this reason Aelfa will always keep their full-time cours-es affordable for all, with effective payment options toenable all talented and aspiring actors/performers thechance to receive elite and bespoke training.

On average most universities and performance collegesaffiliated under a university, have annual tuition fees to anamount £9000+. Resulting in a staggering £27,000+ for a3 year course, before living expenses.

Aelfa’s Affordable Tuition fees are set at (2015-2016):

Foundation in Professional Performance: £6500

Advanced Professional Performance: £13,000(3rd Year is FREE)

Fellowship in Professional Performance: £7000(2nd Year is FREE)

(The above amounts are full course totals)

Aelfa also provides an opportunity for students to developtheir teaching and coaching skills, via our evening ‘Teach-ers’ course. This allows students to recognise and honetheir transferable skills and qualify them with an accreditedqualification.

Private Audition:(A payment of £20 is required to secure an Private Audition

The Audition Content:The audition will take up to 1 Hour in duration. Applicantsare required to:

� Perform 2 Monologues (1 x Classical 1600-1700’s/1 x Contemporary post 1950’s)

� Work with an academy director on one of themonologues to assess creativity

� 16 bars of a Song of applicants choice (Verse &Chorus to mp3 backing track)

� Interview with academy directors
