Please note, only named individuals on the Botanical Garden membership are eligible for the member rates. For questions, please call the education department at 515.402.4277.

This immersive course teaches about wild plant communities and plant ecology for the home garden. Join an expert from the Iowa Bonsai Association for this two-part workshop exploring the ancient Japanese art of bonsai. Participants will learn about the fascinating history of bonsai and how to care for their plants, as well as how to wire and shape them into living sculptures. Plants and Poetry with Mary Swander, Iowa’s Poet LaureateSaturday, Aug. 4, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.

Enjoy exploring the floral imagery of the Botanical Garden while learning how to capture these impressions in poetry. Participants will study poetry based in horticulture including William Wordsworth, Emily Dickinson and Juan Felipe Herrera, then write their own plant-inspired poems. The workshop will conclude with a poetry reading by Mary Swander from 4-4:30. Participants should bring writing tools and paper (or other medium) along with an adventuresome spirit. Explore the plant science magic of indigo, a plant dye used to create

Arrive at 5:30 p.m. to spend fifteen minutes enjoying the gardens, and then participate in a 75 minute yoga practice at 5:45 p.m. Please wear comfortable clothing and bring a yoga mat or towel. Summer CampEnroll children ages 6 to 10 in this day camp that allows children to explore the natural world through the lens of their favorite activities. Using the gardens as unique classrooms, children are inspired to create and explore with hands-on activities. Guest speakers from a wide range of expertise will participate. July 9-13: Junior BotanistsScience takes a step outside during this week of camp, where children will be able to take a closer look at what makes plants so unique, including performing a seed dissection. From planting to

science experiments to exploring ecosystems, this week will open up a whole new side of the garden. July 16-20: Budding ChefsWhat better way to appreciate the bounty of a garden than by cooking with fresh produce? Children will have the chance to taste dishes they prepare and how to correctly measure ingredients and follow a recipe. Little chefs will learn to connect the ingredients they use to where they come from during this week that celebrates the tastier side of plants. July 23-27: Garden ArtistsThe Botanical Garden’s plant collection and unique garden spaces serve as the perfect inspiration for young artists. Children will learn many fun ways to make art from nature including sun prints, painting, sculpture and flower arranging. July 30-Aug. 3: Green ThumbsFrom seed to sprout to sapling, children will learn to start, grow and care for plants properly by digging, planting, watering, and weeding in the garden while exploring the wide world of plants.

Aug. 6-10: Magic in the Garden NEW! Children will explore the magic of the garden using basic chemistry skills. Experiments with solids, liquids and gases to create

Aug. 13-17: Young NaturalistsAspiring naturalists will learn more about the diverse ecosystems and biomes that cover the globe. Children will be inspired to investigate, create and experiment when exploring native plants and animals of different biomes. The desert and tropical rainforest biomes located in our conservatory will spur creativity from food web crafts to habitat games. Price (per child, per week): Members $210, Nonmembers $250

Summer Wildflower Hike at Neal Smith National Wildlife RefugeSaturday, July 14, 10:30-noon

Join Botanical Garden staff for a family-friendly, guided hike through the prairie at Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge, located 35 minutes east of Des Moines. Participants will enjoy a leisurely stroll on paved trails while learning interesting facts about blooming plants and the Refuge. The Prairie Learning Center and bison/elk enclosure will be open to tour following the hike. Transportation is not provided.

Todd will be on-site all day working on trees and offering demonstrations. Whether you’re a seasoned enthusiast or just curious, this event is designed to educate and inspire on the art of bonsai design.

Annual SymposiumSaturday, Oct. 20

The annual symposium is the Botanical Garden’s signature educational opportunity for advancing gardening in Iowa. Each fall, four nationally acclaimed lecturers visit Des Moines to speak about a current topic that impacts home horticulture, plant sciences or ecology.

This year’s symposium theme is The Gardening Adventure. Our keynote speaker is internationally-known garden designer Jimi Blake, founder of Hunting Brook Gardens in Dublin, Ireland, who will discuss creative planting through the seasons.
