Greetings fellow SFPE members. October is already here and it
brings cooler weather along with the start of the last quarter of the cal-
endar year. October is also the month the fire protection community
comes together to promote public education on fire prevention. This
year, Fire Prevention Week will be October 7th thru October 13th and
the theme is “Look. Listen. Learn. Be aware—Fire can happen any-
where”. The following is taken from NFPA:
Through the annual campaign, set for Oct. 7-13 this year, NFPA aims to
raise awareness of “three basic but essential steps to take to reduce the like-
lihood of having a fire.” Those steps are:
LOOK for possible fire hazards in your home and eliminate them.
LISTEN for your home’s smoke alarms. Know that you may have only
minutes to get out if a fire breaks out.
LEARN two ways out of each room of your home. Exits should be easy to
access and free of clutter. After leaving the home, go to your family’s desig-
nated meeting spot, established when you set up a home fire escape plan.
In closing, we want to thank everyone for their continued support of the Chapter and look forward to providing a positive impact on our community.

ALLIED PROFESSIONALS
The Carolina’s chapter has many individuals on our mailing list who do not qualify
for Professional or Associate Member status with SFPE but are still interested in
the services that the organization provides. In 2000, SFPE began to recognize
such individuals and has created the Allied Professionals program to reach out to
such individuals to give them the opportunity to interact with the fire protection
engineering community, without membership in SFPE. This is a special program
to meet the needs of those with whom the engineering community works on a
daily basis.
