On the early morning of January 10 (Beijing

Time), 2012 Dakar Rally headed into the

eighth stage rally. Haval racing team for

Dakar Rally moved forward steadily, Sousa,

Haval racing driver, continued to perform

    excellently, completing the competition by

ranking seventh at the stage and e ighth in

total score, lagging only 90 minutes behind

the top racing driver. Zhou Yong, his

teammate, has taken a lead among Chinese

racing drivers for five successive stages.

The eighth stage is the first one arranged

after the rest day, meaning that racing drivers

officially enter into the second half of the

Rally. The special stage, with a length of 477

kilometers, is also the longest one since the

Rally kicked off. Roads surface with sand

and stones and nearly 2000 meters of

elevation drop increased driving difficulty for

racing drivers. 58 racing drivers of auto

teams withdrew from the Rally before the

start of the stage, hence only a little more

than 60% of them completed the Rally.

Sousas score for the stage is 4 hours 42

minutes and 1 second, lagging only 16

minutes behind the champion of the stage.

Today Sousa drove comparatively stably and

no big problems cropped up in the racing car,

thus he successfully arrived at the finish line.

Zhou Yong has made great progress in this

stage, and navigator Mcmon felt more

satisfied with Zhou Yongs performance. As

Mcmon once served in a champion racing

team, he has always been strict with racing

drivers. In the first few stages, Mcmon

demanded Zhou Yong to make the best use

of the time to drive and even forbid him not to

drink water sometimes. Today Zhou Yong

performed excellently and made no major

mistakes. Zhou Yong himself also thinks that

Mcmons urge makes him more focused in

    the Rally.

    ONCE AGAIN

In the early morning of January 11 (Beijing

time), the ninth-stage of 2012 Dakar Rally

came to its end, in which the Spain racer

Gordon recorded a win in four hours 35

minutes and 21 seconds, while Sousa, a

racer of Haval Dakar Racing Team,

advanced into the seventh in this stage rally

with a score of 22 minutes and 36 seconds

slower than Gordon, striving to moving to

    Top 5.

The ninth-stage rally, covering 565 kilome-

ters in total, was designed with a

556-kilometer special stage that hit the

longest among the fourteen stages and was

    featured by extremely difficult fesh-fesh

    roads and well-known steep downhill.

The Haval racer Sousa, through his

    well-balanced performance, ranked the

seventh at average at the eleven timing

points of this stage rally. In spite of suffering

a downslide at the steep downhill racing, he

maintained the seventh place in this stage

rally with his excellent performance on the

    fesh-fesh road.

    Compared with the teammate Sousa

    enjoying a well-balanced performance, Zhou

Yong didnt act well today and only took the

38th place in this stage rally. Todays racing

designed with many gravel roads was a big

challenge to Zhou Yong who was expert in

desert track. But the good news to Zhou

Yong is that the tenth-stage rally is designed

with a nearly 400km desert track, thus he

may increase his score in this stage rally by

giving a full play to his advantages.

In the early hours of the morning of January

12 (Beijing time), the tenth stage of 2012

Dakar Rally came to an end. Zhou Yong

advanced into the 18th place in the total

score based on his stage-rally ranking of the

22nd, ruling the roost among China racers,

while Sousa enjoyed the 6th in the total score

    by moving up one place.

This stage rally, the last one in Chile,

covered 694 kilometers in total and was

designed with a 317km special stage. The

whole stage, featured by a height above

sea-level of around 1,000 meters, mainly had

gravel roads mixed up with capping mass

and dust & sand as well as a nearly 50km

fesh-fesh road that posed a challenge to the

    racers skills.

After the auto group set off for the competi-

tion of the tenth-stage racing, Zhou Yong just

had modest performance at the first several

timing points and even suffered a downslide

in ranking after the first timing point. The

    defending champion Attiyah's withdrawal due

to malfunction of his racing car was an alarm

to all the racers. Zhou Yong mainly focused

on preparing the racing car at the first half

racing for a jump at the second half one. He

started from the 38th and finally advanced

into the 18th place by surpassing 20 racers in

    the single stage.

The teammate Sousa also adopted the

strategy of first guard and then onset in

the tenth-stage rally and finally rose to the

8th place in this stage rally although he was

surpassed at the first several timing points.

He maintained Top10 in all the ten stage

rallies in total score through his balanced and

good performance. When being asked about

the reason, Sousa owed his achievement to

Haval Dakar Racing Team. After 10 days of

racing, Sousa realized the excellent d ynamic

property and stability of the Haval racing cars

and great expertise of team workers whose

quick repairing of the racing cars ensured the

    continuity of the Rally.

On the morning of January 13, Beijing time,

2012 Dakar Rally launched the 11th stage

    competition. Peterhansel, a 9-time champion

claimed the championship on this stage at

3:56:53. The performance of Chinese teams

was not satisfactory. However, Haval driver

Sousa is still ranked 7th position for overall

    scores.

The 11th stage is the first stage in Peru. In

this route, there is a special stage of 478 km

split over two sections and the liaison section

is 120 km. Service crew are not allowed to

enter this liaison section. If racing car

    encounters a severe malfunction, drivers

have to quit the Rally. Most drivers slowed

down to keep the car in stable. When

Peterhansel heard that Gordon, the Ameri-

can driver broke down his Cardan suspen-

sion, he slowed down and adjusted the pace.

This stage is full of rocks, deserts and the

most difficult fesh-fesh roads. The road

condition is hard. The windshield is full of

dust. Many drivers cannot see the road

clearly and are easily stuck into the sands.

When Sousa drove at 102-120 km of the

stage, he was stuck into the sands because

he cannot see the road clearly. But, fast

digging is a compulsory skill for driver and

co-driver. Sousa returned to race in a short

time. His final result is ranked 22nd position.

The overall score is still ranked 7th position,

not influenced too much due to excellent

results on the previous stages. After Sousa,

Zhou Yong finished at 33rd position on this

stage. It is heard that Zhou Yong decided to

slow down at 120 km special route to keep

stable. This decision was jointly made by

Zhou Yong and Maimon. On the following

three stages, it is still possible for Zhou Yong

to break his best record at the 19th position if

he can perform well in the desert route.

In the morning on Jan.14, 2012 (Beijing

Time), Dakar Rally 2012 entered its stage 12

racing. In terms of cars team, Haval (Dakar)

racing team continued to march forward in

triumph with Haval diver Sousa ranking

eighth, nearly two hours ahead of the driver

in the tenth place. Only two stages upon

completing the match, Haval racing team

basically took a grip of the top 10 places.

Stage 12 racing was also very tough with

total length of 657 kilometers and special

stage of 245 kilometers, and the route mainly

covered with eluvial soil and sand dust.

    Competitor Stephane Peterhansel delayed

nearly half an hour in the race due to sand

    troubles.

Sousa was the 22nd driver and won the

stage 10th place with two hours, fifty four

minutes and thirty seven seconds through

combating the sand difficulties by his skillful

driving and good maneuver of racing car,

lagging behind only less than forty minutes

    than Stage champion Robby Gordon.

Zhou Yong was the 33rd competitor and won

the 23rd place, overtook 10 racing cars on

the single stage. Striving to chase in the first

half of the race where route covered with

sand dust, his performance began to improve

gradually. However, late start got him stuck

behind slower racing cars. It was not easy for

him to move up 10 places. The next stage

also focused on sand dust route, there was

still chance for Zhou Yong to improve his

overall scores for he was good at desert

    racing.

    Nasca Pisco

On the morning of 15th Jan., 2012 Dakar

Rally entered the 13th stage of motor team.

Racer Sousa of Haval Dakar motor team

finished the race with a 4th rank, creating the

best result in Dakar for China motor team.

The 13th stage is the second one countdown

of this session of race, which is also the last

long-distance stage, the total mileage of the

stage is 375km, among which theres a

275km special stage. Only 81 motors

appeared at the starting point of this stage

before the race, compared with 171 motors

of the first stage, the race completion ratio of

    motor team is only 47%.

The competition of Sousa required both

power and experience. Taking the composi-

tion of the road which includes dessert track

intersected with hard gravel ground, Sousa

decided to decrease the tyre pressure to a

proper extent, so as to prevent any potential

sand sinking event. Under the assistance of

new Haval racing motor, Sousa completed

this stage with a score of 3 hours 23 minutes

26 seconds, promoting the total score from

the 7th position to 8th position.

Zhou Yong, a teammate of Sousa also

completed his stage very well, he became

the leading racer of China motor team with a

rank of 18. Although theres only a 29km

special stage on the last competition day,

dessert road is still the main part. For a racer

like Zhou Yong who is familiar with dessert

track skill, theres still a chance for him to

    ONCE AGAIN

On January 16, Beijing Time, 2012 Dakar

Rally lasting for two weeks came to an end in

Lima, Capital of Peru. In the vehicle gro up,

    all Chinese racing teams completed the r ace;

among them, Haval Racing Team for Dakar

Rally not only ranked in top ten of the race

for the first time together with famous racing

teams including BMW and Hummer, but also

created the best record of Chinese racing

    teams participating in the rally.

Compared with the 13 tough stages before,

the last stage only had a special stage of 29

km, which meant that the ranking of racers

would not change dramatically. Though the

famous US racer Gordon became the

champion of the stage, the legendary r acer,

Peterhansel, cannot be stopped to win 10th

champion in Dakar Rally. After the race, he

said excitedly: How hard it is to win in Dakar

Rally! I have waited for five years for another

    champion.

Just like the 10-time champion, Sousa and

Zhou Yong, the Haval racers, also felt

excited. Sousa, with his total score ranking

7th, took 3 places ahead of the famous BMW

racer Holowczyc. Though Zhou Yong did not

break his best record of 19th but ranked

20th, his performance was also worthy of

    compliment.

With the two Haval Racing Cars arriving

Lima, the capital of Peru, the third Dakar

Rally of Haval came to a perfect end . Haval

made three leaps in its three times of

participation in Dakar Rally, and its total

score rose to 7th this year from 33rd and

22nd of the last two years. Haval not on ly

becomes the first Chinese racing team

ranking in top ten of Dakar Rally, but also

proves that the Haval SUV can endure the

tough environment of Dakar Rally, and its

international brand influence will surely be

    further enhanced.

    ONCE AGAIN

The Great Wall Haval SUV motor team has

attracted lots of focus from the beginning: In

the first stage, the 307 motor of Sousa

passed the finishing point at a sixth rank,

    creating a new record for China motor team;

while the previous Dakar record keeper,

Zhou Yong in China motor team encountered

a Waterloo, ranking only No. 149 in this

stage. Whether Sousa now at sixth rank

could create another new history for China

motor team, or Zhou Yong could catch up

with this new record under a reverse starting

situation become the focus of this e vent.

After the smooth end of the stage in

Argentina, the one in Chile began. Sousaranked high in Top 10 then and Zhou Yong

also soared up to Top 30. What was

corresponding to this was Great Wall Motors

    Teams outstanding performance outside the

court. On 9th Jan., local time, G reat Wall

Motors dealers in Chile held a listing

    ceremony for Wingle 5 series.

Excellent performance of Haval Dakar Motor

Team has made Great Wall Motors attract

more attention from people in Chile. On

January 9, local time, A Great Wall Motors

dealer in Chile DERCO Company decided

to hold a listing ceremony for Wingle 5 series

during the game. At 10:00 a.m., January 9,

10 Wingles were stopped beside the road of

    Antofagasta Avenue, bringing an extremely

    cheerful atmosphere there. Hundreds of

people including dealers, car owners and

journalists were all present at the listingceremony where Thibaud, the general agent

of Great Wall Motors in DERCO, said: The

overall sales amount of Great Wall Motors in

Chile reaches nearly 7000 in the past year,

ranking No. 15 in the nations market, which

is the No. 1 brand from China. Take San

Diego, the capital of Chile, for example, the

sales amount in 2011 there has surpassed

2700, accounting for 40% the total amount of

2011, which has greatly enhanced our

confidence in acting for Great Wall Motors.

Besides, their pickups have styles suitable to

road conditions and motor demand here.

In order to test the performance of Wingle

pickup, Thibaud drove a Wingle 5 in front of

the motor team, driving directly from the

ceremony to the starting point of the eighth

racing stage. As the driving route happened

to pass the desert section, sand dust wasrolled up by 10 pickups with a scene similar

to Dakar rally. It seemed that desert section

in Dakar could not block a motor team

    composed by 10 Wingle pickups.

Walkers on both sides of the road also

stopped to watch and gave high praise to the

motor team. Great Wall Motors dealers in

Chile dedicated a lot in this event, not only

watched the Haval motor setting out at the

starting point, but visited Haval Motor Team

    headquarter on their holidays.

At the game spot, we also saw this team

made of Great Wall Dealers, representatives

of car owners and journalists, driving 11

Great Wall Wingle pickups, led by a

    imitational version Loong Racing Car

painted by themselves, which entered the

track from the ending point of Antofagasta.

They found a perfect watching position,

upper wind entry, facing the race, from which

a large S-shape racing road could be seen.

After setting up a camp, they fetched out

food and beer, they even took a small-sized

generator, supplying two raining fans for the

whole watching area. What a joyful life they

led! On that evening, the Great Wall fans

team set up by dealers in Chile also came to

the repair zone to watch the race and

interviewed Su Pengcheng, manager of the

motor team about some issues concerned.

Chile was one of the major sponsor countries

in Dakar. It was known that, Wingle pickup

entered Chile as early as in 2008, exploring

the market of Americas. That the dealers in

Chile use Dakar rally for promulgating Wingle

pickup was a successful practice of combin-

ing Great Wall Motors brand communication

with product promotion, which also indicated

the high attention on Wingle pickup.

    ONCE AGAIN

Dakar rally was a race of the transient. In this

year, the race met with its 27th country

    Peru.

As it happened, Wingle pickup service

motors were also provided by Peru dealers.

    Applying regular limited-produced style of

Wingle pickup for Dakar logistics guarantee

also indicated recognition of dealers on

    Wingle pickup performance, while an

excellent strength had always been the

    guarantee for logistics provision.

As we all know, it was absolutely an

    extremely challenge that limited-produced

cars without modification drove on the way toDakar. In this year, the difficulty level in

Dakar was much higher than that of former

ones, not only bringing along difficulty for

race but challenge for service cars. Except

the difficulty for driving route decreased

compared with the track, Haval SUV and

Wingle pickup service cars also were

required to deal with poor weather and

    complicated road situations etc. Sound

    chassis, suspension and motor were

    undoubtedly strong weapons to conquer

these difficulties. Meanwhile, as a service

car, Shingle pickup also undertook the

transportation task, which required a strong

loading capacity of Wingle. Compared with

three Dakars from 2009 to 2011, a great

modification had been carried out in 2012.

The overall race was divided into 14 stations,

with 5 stations in Argentina and Chile

respectively and 4 in Peru. Racers should

cross the spacious Pampas, lofty Andes and

continuous sand hills in Atacama Desert. The

newly added complicated landform in Peru

this year would bring along more mystery

    and difficulty to racers.

Nothing was better than the tough Dakarracing to be used as a trial field for mass-

produced motors. Haval H3 and Wingle 5

acting as Haval SUV motor team service cars

were not only used as race service cars but

responsible for their research and test. The

test was launched by Great Wall Motor

Research Institute, carrying out a compre-

hensive test on such aspects as suspension,

    chassis and turning system and

    air-conditioning cooling and extreme

condition adaptation of Wingle 5 and Haval

H3 service cars via complicated Dakar

tracks. After nearly a decade technology

    innovation and integration, Haval SUV

    performed an extremely strong adapting

capacity in complicated and arduous Dakar

race situation, achieving test results all above

good, which fully indicated that mass-

produced car styles could also undertake

    tough situation in Dakar.

Haval H3 and Wingle 5 race service cars all

    received maintenance given by qualified

technicians in Chile section. At that time, two

service cars had covered a distance more

than 5000 km with Dakar headquarter. In

order to carry out a sound logistic promulga-tion, the two service cars went to the side of

complicated tracks to take photos for Haval

SUV Loong Racing Car from multiple angles

for many times. During the maintenance,

technicians from Chile spoke highly of the

racing service cars, it seemed that compli-

cated Dakar road conditions did not bring

along any damage to Haval H3 and Wingle 5,

so only simple routine maintenance was

    required.
