14 are women All from Nebraska (so far) 6 from Central or Eastern Nebraska 9 with < 5 years in current organization 11 in public health/environmental org 6 self-identify as being part of a racial or ethnic

minority group 11 masters or doctoral level in education All highly enthusiastic about being in the first

class of scholars

Orientation Objectives:

1. Understand the goals, assumptions, “outcomes” model, and leadership competencies that underlie the Institute

2. Understand in general the schedule, curriculum and activities of the Institute

3. Understand what is expected of scholars and what scholars can expect from the Institute

4. Know what needs to be done by whom and by when to get ready for Kickoff

Great Plains PHLI Goals

1. Assure and enhance leadership knowledge, skills, attitudes, and competencies in the public health workforce of the Great Plains Region

2. Increase the value of public health within communities through greater leadership in action

3. Expand relationships among public health leaders in the Region

Great Plains PHLI Assumptions

Our Institute will encompass individual, organizational, trans-organizational, and systems levels of learning and change.

Our Institute will be local and regional, while including national and global perspectives.

Our Institute will be aligned with other PHLI’s nationally and fueled by our involvement in the National Public Health Leadership Development Network.

Our Institute will be based on the values of social justice and equity.

Our Institute will demonstrate and promote cultural competence and diversity in leadership practice.

We shall model leadership in our Institute work.

I. Participating in the Institute builds leader/scholar’s skills, knowledge, attitudes, competencies in public health leadership

II. Scholar becomes a more effective leader within her/his organization who fosters organizational capacity, effectiveness
