“Great is the gospel of our glorious God” is probably the most well known hymn my father wrote.

It is a hymn that captures the Christian’s feelings about the gospel.

I trust this hymn reflects your heart and your love of the Lord and thankfulness for the grace of God towards sinners.

Indeed, as the hymn says “O let the praises of my heart be Thine” so may we now join together in praising our blessed Lord and Saviour

Pastor

Great is the gospel of our glorious God, Where mercy met the anger of God’s rod; A penalty was paid and pardon bought, And sinners lost at last to Him were brought:

O let the praises of my heart be Thine, For Christ has died that I may call Him mine, That I may sing with those who dwell above, Adoring, praising Jesus, King of love.

Great is the mystery of godliness; Great is the work of God’s own holiness; It moves my soul, and causes me to long For greater joys than to the earth belong:

The Spirit vindicated Christ our Lord, And angels sang with joy and sweet accord; The nations heard, a dark world flamed with light – When Jesus rose in glory and in might:

morning opening prayerreading: mark 5v25-34 announcements & children storymain prayersermon: luke 6v19 & mark 5v30closing prayer* hymn 580 to close

‘touch of faith’ Luk 6:19  And the whole multitude sought to touch him: for there went virtue out of him, and healed them all. Mar 5:30  And Jesus, immediately knowing in himself that virtue had gone out of him, turned him about in the press, and said, Who touched my clothes?

• We see people crowding around the Saviour to be healed of their diseases

• Many in revivals crowded the churches to be saved

your approach and touch • The woman was cautious and

secret in her approach• Sometimes people are cautious

when approaching the gospel and yet they come

• The woman was also bold in her approach and needed much effort

• So men need to make effort of soul and venture upon Christ to be saved

• The woman tried many doctors and men also try many ways to save themselves

• The woman felt her need keenly and believed in Christ. This is an important point with the salvation of our souls, we must know we are sinners and believe Christ is the Saviour

his awareness and allowing • Christ is full of “virtue” and full

of salvation. • He knows those who approach

and touch him with faith.• He will give his salvation to

those who believe in him• At this time the whole world is

social distancing. We need not fear this touch of faith with Christ. He will heal us.

evening opening prayerreadings: haggai 2announcementsmain prayersermon: haggai 2v9closing prayer* hymn 299 to close

‘latter glory’ Hag 2:9  The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former, saith the LORD of hosts: and in this place will I give peace, saith the LORD of hosts.

• Haggai was a prophet during the time of the return of the exiles to Jerusalem

• Two temples are compared in our verse. Solomon’s temple and Zerubbabel’s temple

• Herod’s temple is often thought of as the same temple as Zerubbabel’s temple

• But note how the glory of Zerubbabel’s temple is said to be greater than the glory of Solomon’s temple!

the former glory • The period of history when

Solomon’s temple was built ws the golden age of Israel

• The architecture of the temple was grand and beautiful

• There were many sacrifices made at the temple, and especially at the dedication of the temple

• At this time the ark of the covenant was inside the holy of holies. The blood of sacrifice was sprinkled on the ark

• Most especially the “shekinah” glory of God appeared over the ark of the covenant.

• What is more the “shekinah” glory of God filled the temple at the dedication of the temple

the latter glory • In comparison the history and

architecture of te second temple was not so glorious.

• Although the sacrifices continued there was no ark of the covenant in the temple.

• How then could the glory of this second temple be greater?

• Jesus Christ was the latter glory! He was in the temple as a babe and as a child. But especially he stood in the temple and preached the gospel. He said “I am the light of the world”

• He spoke of the gospel of peace and sins forgiven
