The Tomahawk Trip Tips

Here are some tips from MDRA member Larry Brown a long range charter master on what you should bring. His charters last many days and target the really big 200 to 300 lb tuna. So he has “Been There” and “Done That” enough to really be an expert.

Tips on What to bring on the trip

- Assuming the same grade and personality of fish are present bring outfits of 30#, 40# and 60# for bait. Only use 30# if fish are very picky and there are no big models in the area. - 40# was our “go to” set up - Consider having a redundant 40# set up so you can get back into the water immediately after landing a fish or if you lose your hook or leader. - The 60# outfit is on standby if the 100# plus fish show up. - Hook size was 2/0 and 3/0 for 30 and 40# line and 4/0 for 60# line. BFT have teeth and know how to use them, making circle hooks more effective and critical. - Remember do NOT swing or set the hook on circle hooks – just wind down a come tight. Tuna have a huge mouth and you are using a small bait, so engage the drag as soon as the fish picks up your bait. Don’t count to 5 before setting the hook. You don’t want it swallowing your bait. - After the initial flurry when the fish charge up the chum line and boil on all baits, bluefin tuna normally settle into a plunker bite and stay 100 – 200 yards away from the boat. This is a long bloody way. Get a good bait and keep letting it out for a time which seems like forever. While letting your bait out it is important every few minutes to put your reel in gear and wind in slowly about 5 – 10 turns of the handle. This straightens your line, reduces ugly tangles and frequently provokes a bite. A bait in motion is more visible and more lively than a tired bait just flowing in the current. When you think you in the “zone” let it out even more! When you are sure you are in the zone, reel in slowly 20 cranks and let it out again, repeating this process several times before you finally wind in to change baits. This keeps the bait in motion – (think of a mouse or bunny, which is more vulnerable to attack by a cat or hawk when moving.) When you do finally wind in to change baits, again do it slowly and you may stimulate a strike. Fishing this way requires a nose hooked or shoulder hooked bait, not a belly or butt hooked bait. - If the captain says he is monitoring tuna 30 fathoms attach a 6 – 12 oz (depending on the wind drift) torpedo sink-er with a rubber band about 3 – 4 feet above your hook, nose hook a bait and slowly let it out. When out 150 – 200 yards put it in gear and let the boat pull the bait through the water in the wind drift ( like slow trolling). Wind in slowly to pro-voke a strike when ready to change baits. Use your judgment; eg, if there is ZERO wind drift just let out 180 feet – 60 fathoms straight up and down. Slowly wind up and slowly let down working about 30 – 40 feet of the water column in this zone. - Consider taking an additional 60# high speed outfit for yoyo jigging. Chrome and blue with a glow back, Tady 9 or 4/0 with a single hook work best. Drop down to the zone, put in gear, point the rod straight at the line (fish) and wind as fast as you can. DO NOT set the hook, just keep winding through the strike to set the hook. - I think fluorocarbon leaders can make a big difference, especially for picky bluefin. - After the initial flurry I suggest fish-ing the bow. The boat sometimes drifts diag-onally stern first, meaning all the chum and discarded bait drift up off the bow. You will frequently see fish boil off the bow. Pin on a great bait, let it dangle as you rapidly walk forward on the upwind side to the bow and drop in. You are already 90’ closer to the zone. Good luck MDRA’rs. Knock em silly. Larry B

Put this on the Calendar before your wife marks it up and you can’t go with us! September 25th — Friday — Board the boat that evening. 26th—Saturday — Wake up on the Fishing Grounds and Fish hard all day! 27th—Sunday — Depending on the conditions new spot or the one we found that has the fish! Fish all Day! 28th —Monday— Return to the landing at the docks very early so you can limp back to work half a day.
