Introduction

The Great Expectations lesson plan contains a variety of teaching materials that cater to all learning styles. Inside you'llfind 30 Daily Lessons, 20 Fun Activities, 180 Multiple Choice Questions, 60 Short Essay Questions, 20 Essay Questions,Quizzes/Homework Assignments, Tests, and more. The lessons and activities will help students gain an intimateunderstanding of the text; while the tests and quizzes will help you evaluate how well the students have grasped thematerial.

Target Grade: 7th-12th (Middle School and High School)

Length of Lesson Plan: Approximately 140 pages. Page count is estimated at 300 words per page. Length will varydepending on format viewed.

Each lesson plan is downloadable in PDF and Word. The Word file is viewable with any PC or Mac and can be furtheradjusted if you want to mix questions around, add your own headers for things like "Name," "Period," and "Date." TheWord file offers unlimited customizing options so that you can teach in the most efficient manner possible. Once youdownload the file, it is yours to keep and print for your classroom.

Lesson Plan Calendars

The Lesson Plan Calendars provide daily suggestions about what to teach. They include detailed descriptions of when toassign reading, homework, in-class work, fun activities, quizzes, tests and more. Use the entire lesson plan, orsupplement it with your own curriculum ideas. Calendars cover one week, two week, four week and eight week units.Determine how long your Great Expectations unit will be, then use one of the calendars provided to plan out your entirelesson.

Chapter Abstracts

Chapter abstracts are short descriptions of events that occur in each chapter. They highlight major plot events and detailthe important relationships and characteristics of important characters. The Chapter Abstracts can be used to review whatthe students have read, or to prepare the students for what they will read. Hand the abstracts out in class as a study guide,or use them as a "key" for a class discussion. They are relatively brief, but can serve to be an excellent refresher of thetext for either a student or teacher.

Character and Object Descriptions

Character and Object Descriptions provide descriptions of the significant characters and objects/places in the book.These can be printed out and used as an individual study guide for students, a "key" for leading a class discussion, asummary review prior to exams, or a refresher for an educator. The character and object descriptions are also used insome of the quizzes and tests in this lesson plan. The longest descriptions run about 200 words. They become shorter asthe importance of the character or object declines.

Multiple Choice Questions

The 180 Multiple Choice Questions in this lesson plan will test a student's recall and understanding of the text. Use thesequestions for quizzes, homework assignments or tests. The questions are broken out into sections, so they focus onspecific chapters or acts within a book or play. This allows you to test and review the book as you proceed through theunit. Typically, there are 5-15 questions per chapter, act or section.

Short Essay Questions

The 60 Short Essay Questions listed in this section require a one to two sentence answer. They ask students todemonstrate a deeper understanding of the text by describing what they've read, rather than just recalling it .The shortessay questions evaluate not only whether students have read the material, but also how well they understand and canapply it. They require more thought than a multiple choice question, but are shorter than the essay questions.

Essay Questions/Writing Assignments

These 20 Essay Questions/Writing Assignments can be used as essay questions on a test, or as stand-alone essay topicsfor a take-home or in-class writing assignment. Students should have a full understanding of the unit material in order toanswer these questions. They often include multiple parts of the work and ask for a thorough analysis of the overall text.They nearly always require a substantial response. Essay responses are typically expected to be one (or more) page(s)and consist of multiple paragraphs, although it is possible to write answers more briefly. These essays are designed tochallenge a student's understanding of the broad points in a work, interactions among the characters, and main points andthemes of the text. But, they also cover many of the other issues specific to the work and to the world today.

Daily Lessons

This section of the lesson plan contains 30 Daily Lessons. Daily Lessons each have a specific objective and offer at leastthree (often more) ways to teach that objective. Lessons include classroom discussions, group and partner activities,in-class handouts, individual writing assignments, at least one homework assignment, class participation exercises andother ways to teach students about the text in a classroom setting. You can combine daily lessons or use the ideas withinthem to create your own unique curriculum. They vary greatly from day to day and offer an array of creative ideas thatprovide many options for an educator.

Fun Classroom Activites

Fun Classroom Activities differ from Daily Lessons because they make "fun" a priority. The 20 enjoyable, interactiveclassroom activities that are included will help students understand the text in fun and entertaining ways. Fun ClassroomActivities include group projects, games, critical thinking activities, brainstorming sessions, writing poems, drawing orsketching, and countless other creative exercises. Many of the activities encourage students to interact with each other, becreative and think "outside of the box," and ultimately grasp key concepts from the text by "doing" rather than simplystudying. Fun activities are a great way to keep students interested and engaged while still providing a deeperunderstanding of the work and its themes.

Quizzes/Homework Assignments

The Quizzes/Homework Assignments are worksheets that can be used in a variety of ways. They pull questions from themultiple choice and short essay sections, the character and object descriptions, and the chapter abstracts to createworksheets that can be used for pop quizzes, in-class assignments and homework. Periodic homework assignments andquizzes are a great way to encourage students to stay on top of their assigned reading. They can also help you determinewhich concepts and ideas your class grasps and which they need more guidance on. By pulling from the differentsections of the lesson plan, quizzes and homework assignments offer a comprehensive review of the text in manageableincrements that are less substantial than a full blown test.

Tests

Use the Test Summary page to determine which pre-made test is most relevant to your students' learning styles. Thislesson plan provides both full unit tests and mid-unit tests. You can choose from several tests that include differingcombinations of multiple choice questions, vocabulary questions, short answer questions, short essay questions, fullessay questions, character and object matching, etc. Some of the tests are designed to be more difficult than others. Somehave essay questions, while others are limited to short-response questions, like multiple choice, matching and shortanswer questions. If you don't find the combination of questions that best suits your class, you can also create your owntest.

You have the option to Create Your Own Quiz or Test. If you want to integrate questions you've developed for yourcurriculum with the questions in this lesson plan, or you simply want to create a unique test or quiz from the questionsthis lesson plan offers, it's easy to do. Cut and paste the information from the Create Your Own Quiz or Test page into aWord document to get started. Scroll through the sections of the lesson plan that most interest you and cut and paste theexact questions you want to use into your new, personalized lesson plan.

Evaluation Forms

Use the Oral Reading Evaluation Form when students are reading aloud in class. Pass the forms out before you assignreading, so students will know what to expect. You can use the forms to provide general feedback on audibility,pronunciation, articulation, expression and rate of speech. You can use this form to grade students, or simply commenton their progress.

Use the Writing Evaluation Form when you're grading student essays. This will help you establish uniform criteria forgrading essays even though students may be writing about different aspects of the material. By following this form youwill be able to evaluate the thesis, organization, supporting arguments, paragraph transitions, grammar, spelling,punctuation, etc. of each student's essay.

Lesson Plan Calendar

Lesson plan calendars give you daily suggestions about what to teach. Determine how long your Great Expectations unit will be, then use one of the following calendarsto plan out your entire lesson. In some cases, you may want to assign some of the reading over the weekend preceding the unit. This will give students some context forthe start of the unit.

Definitions:

Review Chapter Abstracts - Chapter abstracts are synopses of each chapter that you can use to review the reading assignments with your students.• Daily Lessons - There are 30 daily lessons detailed in this lesson plan. Select a new daily lesson each day.• Fun Activities - There are 20 fun activities in this lesson plan. They serve as a way for students to interact with the material in an enjoyable, educational way.• Read Aloud in Class - Ask students to take turns reading aloud from where they left off in their most recent reading assignment. Use the Oral ReadingEvaluation Form in this lesson plan to evaluate their reading skills.

In-Class Handout - An in-class handout can be one of the quizzes/homework assignments, vocabulary games, worksheets, or an essay/writing assignment. It'ssomething the students can comple and turn in during class, or begin in-class and take home to finish as a homework assignment.

Chapter Abstracts

Chapter 1 | Chapter 2 Abstract

* Pip is an orphan who lives with his sister and her husband, Joe the blacksmith. Pip meets an escaped convict on themarshes and promises to bring him food and a file because he feels pity.* Pip's sister is 20 years older than Pip, and is cruel, caning him with a stick she calls the Tickler. Joe, however, is verykind and devoted to Pip.* While Mrs. Joe is questioning Pip about where he has been, they hear guns on the marshes and learn that anotherconvict has escaped from the prisoner ships.* Pip steals some cheese, bread, mincemeat, a pork pie, and some brandy, and he gets a file from the forge. Then he runsto give them to the convict.


* As Pip runs to deliver the goods to the convict, he sees a younger convict with a bruised face who tries to take a swingat Pip. He runs off and tells the older convict about what he has seen.* The Convict gulps down the food and brandy, and begins to use the file to cut away his irons. He says he will try tofind the other convict when he is stronger and free of the chains.* When Mrs. Joe asks where Pip has been, he says he has been listening to carols. They get dressed in their formal wearand head to church. Afterwards, they enjoy a nice Christmas feast.* Mr. Pumblechook chokes up his brandy, into which Pip has poured tarwater to hide the missing portion he has given tothe convict.* Before anyone notices the missing pork pie, the dinner is interupted by soldiers who are looking for the escapedconvicts.


* The soldiers are looking for the convict. They ask Joe to help pick a lock, and they have Pip go with them to help findthe convict.* The soldiers find both of the convicts fighting on the marshes. Mrs. Joe thinksthis is very advantageous.* Pip is taken to Miss Havisham's house where he meets Estella, a lovely young lady. They play cards together in front ofMiss Havisham.* Pip calls his Jacks "knaves," and Estella laughs at this, calling him a common boy. Pip cries at this harsh treatment, andEstella laughs and pushes him out of the gate.


* Pip tries to protect Miss Havisham and her eccentricities by lying to his sister about his visit. He tells her they rode in acarriage and ate cake off of golden plates.* When Pip tells Joe that he has lied, Joe is dissappointed, but understands. Pip complains about being so common, andJoe tells him that all educated men must start from the same foundation.* Pip tells Joe that he feels his first day at Miss Havisham's house was the most important day of his entire life. He asksBiddy to help him learn as fast as possible.* One night, Pip goes to a local tavern to find Joe and meets a stranger who stirs his drink with an old file. Pip realizesthat this stranger must know the convict he helped.* The stranger gives Pip a guinea wrapped in some one pound notes. When Joe and his wife see this, they go back to thetavern to return it, but the stranger is gone.


* Pip goes to Miss Havisham's house a second time, and notices that all the clocks are stopped at 20 minutes before 9.Miss Havisham has Pip walk with her.* Miss Havisham tells Pip that, when she dies, she wants to be laid out on the table that held her wedding feast. Pip fightswith a pale young man at the house and wins.* Before Pip leaves Miss Havisham's house the second time, Estella allows Pip to kiss her on the cheek. It is implied thatshe had seen him win the fight.* Pip goes to Miss Havisham's house every other day and pushes her around a room in a mobile lawn chair. * Pip begs Joe to give him a day off so that he can go see Miss Havisham. He consents, and Pip goes there only to learnthat Estella is not home. Pip meets with Mr. Wopsle and goes to a tavern.* Orlick, who dislikes Pip for his special treatment and sends sparks his way while working, demands to be given the dayoff as well. Mrs. Joe objects, and Joe and Orlick fight.* While Pip is at the tavern with Mr. Wopsle, he hears that his sister has been badly injured at home. She is unable tospeak, but makes a hammer sign meaning Orlick.* Biddy moves into the house to help out, and Orlick visits Mrs. Joe a number of times.


* Pip goes to see Miss Havisham on her birthday and she gives him a guinea. Biddy begins changing her appearance andtakes better care of herself.* Pip walks with Biddy in the marshes and tells her about his dream of being a gentleman. He says he wishes he couldfall in love with her as she is good and stable.* After four years of working for Joe, Pip goes to the tavern with him where the men are all talking about a murder.* A strange lawyer name Mr. Jaggers is there who reminds the men that, in England, a man is innocentt until provenguilty, which embarrasses Mr. Wopsle.* Mr. Jaggers tells Pip that he is there to make him a gentleman. He has an anonymous benefactor who wants to pay forhis education under Matthew Pocket, a relative of Miss Havisham.* The only contingencies on Pip for this strange fortune is that he keep his name as Pip, and never ask about the identityof his anonymous benefactor.


* Joe burns Pip's indenture papers, and Pip gets a new suit from the tailor. Mr. Pumblechook is pleased with the changein Pip and is kind to him.* Pip goes to see Miss Havisham who is happy with this new development in Pip's life. Pip is certain ii is she who isfunding his new life.* Before leaving, Pip asks Biddy to help Joe with his education. She and Joe throw an old shoe after Pip when he leavesas an old parting ritual.* When Pip gets to London, he goes to see Mr. Jaggers in his office where he sees a long line of people, most of whomare dismissed without a word.* While he waits, Pip is taken on a tour of the Newgate prison, and is appalled at what he sees. He spends his first nightin London at Barnard's Inn.


* Mr. Wemmick is painted as a depressing and business-minded man. He is to be Pip's conduit for money in London.* Pip meets his roommate who is the son of his tutor. His name is Herbert Pocket, and Pip recognizes him as the boy hefought at Miss Havisham's house.* Herbert teaches Pip some table manners, and tells him some history about Miss Havisham. She had been spoiled by herfather after her mother died, and he favored her over her half-brother in his will.* On Miss Havisham's wedding day, her suitor, who was believed to be in a conspiracy with her half-brother, sent her anote ending the wedding. She read this letter at 20 minutes to 9.


* Herbert spends his days at a counting house, and hopes to be an insurer of ships some day. He has many siblings.


* Pip meets Matthew Pocket, his tutor and Herbert's father, and Belinda Pocket, Herbert's mother. Matthew was educatedat Cambridge, and Belinda was raised thinking she would be royalty.* Belinda continues her reading when she meets Pip and seems annoyed at his intrusion. The house is run mostly by theservants.* Belinda bursts into tears when she gets a note from a neightbor saying that her servant was seen slapping her baby. Sheis bothered that they would dare to interfere.* Matthew tells Pip that his education is not heading towards any profession and that he will be overseeing all of Pip'seducation.* Pip chooses to live with Hebert so that he does not get lost in all the chaos at the Pocket's house.* Pip goes to see Mr. Jaggers to request some more money for furniture, and sees him using ingenious means to win hismurder case.* Mr. Wemick invites him to dinner and to watch Mr. Jaggers in action.


* Pip describes some of his school mates. Pip goes boating with Drummle, whom he dislikes, and Strartop.* Pip is invited to Mr. Wemick's house for dinner, and finds him to be a different man at home from that at work. He ishappy and personable, and his house is made to look like a castle with a drawbridge.* Pip and his schoolmates dine with Jaggers, who takes a keen interest in Drummle and gives him the nickname "Spider".* Jaggers's maid, Molly, is introduced as a pale woman with strange scars on her wrists.


* Joe comes to visit Pip in London, and is very uncomfortable for the entire time, having never been in fine clothes oraway from the forge for extended periods of time.* Joe tells Pip that Mr. Wopsle has decided to become an actor. Pip has decorated his room with help from Herbert, andhas hired a servant named Pepper.* Pip goes to the marshes to visit Estella, but stays at the Blue Boar rather than with Joe. He reads a newspaper articleabout Pumblechook's being his mentor.* While travelling to the Blue Boar, there are some convicts in his carriage who are being transferred to a prison boat.One of them is the man who gave Pip the pound notes when he was a child.


* Pip goes to the Havisham estate where he sees Orlick, who is Miss Havisham's new porter. Estella says she does notremember making Pip cry when they were younger.* Miss Havisham tells Pip to love Estella no matter how she treats him. Mr. Jaggers comes to visit and play cards, butdoes not look at Pip even once while he is there.* Pip tells Jaggers that he does not trust Orlick, and Jaggers says he will tell Miss Havisham. Pip returns to London andtells Herbert he loves Estella.* Herbert tells Pip he should detach himself from Estella as she does not love him. Herbert is in love with Clara.* Pip sees a handbill for Mr. Wopsle's playing Hamlet.



* Pip goes to see Mr. Wopsle in Hamlet. It is not good, and the audience laughs at the actors. Pip takes Mr. Wopsle, nowgoing by the name Waldengrove, to supper after the show.* Estella writes to Pip telling him she is coming to London. Pip visits Newgate prison with Mr. Wemmick because aColonel who is about to be executed is leaving him his pigeons.* After a long wait, Pip finally sees Estella in a coach window.


* Estella tells Pip that she is heading to Surry, and that her entire family is against Pip. She seems not to care and tellshim he will be allowed to see her from time to time.* Herbert and Pip both start spening a lot of money, and Herbert gets deeply in debt. They join the Finches in the GroveClub after Startop's suggestion.* Pip has to return home when he receives word that his sister has died.


* Pip returns home to find a large funeral procession underway for his sister. Joe wanted a small funeral, but was afraidof what the neighbors would think.* Orlick is pursuing Biddy, and Biddy is mad at Pip because she knows he will not keep his promise to visit Joe oftennow that his wife is dead.* Mr. Jaggers meets with Pip on his 21st birthday to discuss his outrageous spending. He tells Pip his allowance is 125pounds per quarter.* Mr. Jaggers refuses to give Pip any information about his anonymous benefactor.


* Pip visits Wemmick at his castle and asks him to help Herbert. Wemmick promises to use his connections to getHerbert a job in an accounting house.* Pip notices Wemmick put his arm around Miss Skiffins, his maid, a number of times in a loving manner. She alwaysdiscreetly unwinds his hand with a smile.* Pip reproaches Estella one night for being cold. At a club meeting, Pip finds out that Estella and Drummle have beencourting, and Pip is crushed.


* One night during a horrible snow storm after Herbert has moved out, Pip hears a knock at his door. It is the convictfrom the marshes. The convict is his anonymous benefactor.* The convict had gone to Austrailia and made a fortune through a number of different business ventures. He risked hislife to come back to England to see Pip become a gentleman with his help.* Magwitch, the convict, will be hanged if he is recognized in England. He tells Pip that he will be disguising himself asa farmer.* Herbert walks in and sees Magwitch. Magwitch makes Herbert swear on his Bible that Herbert will not tell anyonewhat he sees or hears that day.



* Magwitch expresses his gratitude to Herbert for keeping his secret, and tells Herbet about his strange history with Pip.* Herbert arranges for Magwitch to stay with Clara, and Herbert and Pip begin planning a way to get Magwitch out ofthe country.* Magwitch had grown up poor and was in and out of prisons. He was taught to read and write by strangers along theway. He met Compeyson, the other convict, at the Epson races.* Magwitch and Compeyson become partners in crime with another man named Arthur, who died of fright when he sawa ghost.* Pip writes a note to Herbert saying that he thinks Compeyson may be the man who jilted Miss Havisham because herbrother's name was Arthur.* Both Compeyson and Magwitch are caught and sent to jail, but Magwitch gets 14 years while Compeyson only seven.


* Magwitch takes on the name Provis. Compeyson is still a huge threat, so Pip volunteers to help him leave the country.* Before Pip leaves, he decides he wants to see Estella and Miss Havisham. When he gets to the Blue Boar, he seesDrummle who brags about his relationship with Estella.* The two almost fight until they are interrupted by some farmers. A man lights Drummle's cigar, and Pip thinks it isOrlick.* Pip confronts Estella and Miss Havisham about their lying to him. They both admit to leading him on. Estella says shewill be marrying Drummle despite how much Pip loves her.* As Pip is leaving the Havisham estate, he sees a letter to him from Mr. Wemmick instructing him to not go home.


* Pip returns to London and finds some temporary lodgings in Covent Gardens. He then goes to see Mr. Wemmick to askabout the note.* Mr. Wemmick stays vague, but tells Pip that his apartment is being watched. He does not say by whom, but clearlyindicates that it is Compeyson.* Pip goes to see Magwitch at Clara's house. Magwitch says he is being watched and must leave the countryimmediately. He tells Pip to call him Campbell.


* Pip decides not to take any more of Magwitch's money, and has Herbert give him the pocket book back. He sells someof his jewlery to pay some bills.* Pip entertains himself by going to see Mr. Wopsle's production. Mr. Wopsle later tells him that Compeyson was sittingbehind him at the theater.* Mr. Jaggers sees Pip walking along Cheapside, and invites him to dine with him and Mr. Wemmick.* Mr. Jaggers tells Pip that Estella has married Drummle, and that Drummle will probably beat her when he gets angry.* Mr. Jaggers says he got his maid acquitted of an accused murder. She had a daughter whom she gave up for adoption inorder to take revenge on the father.



* Pip walks to Miss Havisham's house. She gives him 900 pounds to help Herbert, and she apologizes for Estella'streatment of him.* She says she replaced her heart with ice on purpose, and she regrets it now since Estella has no love in her heart, noteven for Miss Havisham.* Pip takes a walk around the grounds and decides to check on Miss Havisham before leaving. He sees her just in time tosave her from a great fire. They are both badly burned.* Pip's arms are badly burned. Herbet helps nurse him back to health, and tells Pip that he has spoken to Magwitch.* Magwitch and Molly had once been a couple. They have a child. Magwitch is Estella's father, but he does not knowthat she is alive.


* Pip asks Mr. Jaggers about Estella's birth, and after arguing with Mr. Wemmick, he tells Pip the truth.* Estella's mother had wanted to kill her, but Mr. Jaggers promised to represent her in court if she would give her up foradoption. Jaggers gave Estella to Miss Havisham.* Mr. Jaggers refuses to make public the truth about Estella's birth because it would harm her marriage, and can do nogood.* Pip, with the help of Mr. Wemmick, has arranged for Herbert to take a position at Clerriker's office owned byWemmick's brother-in-law.* Pip and Herbert receive a strange letter concerning Provis, telling them to meet the sender in the sluice house, a placeout on the marshes.* Mr. Wemmick sends Pip and Herbert a letter saying they must go and travel abroad immediately.


* Pip goes to the sluice house and finds that Orlick is there. Orlick puts a noose around his neck and says he wants to killPip and burn his body in a lime kiln.* Orlick hates Pip for having cost him his jobs at Joe's and Miss Havisham's and for ruining his chances with Biddy. Headmits to killing Pip's sister.* Just as Orlick is about to kill Pip, Herbert, Startop, and Trabb's boy all enter. They had discovered the letter fromOrlick and came to help Pip.* Pip and Magwitch, who is disguised as a river pilot, plan to row to a boat and lay low until they can get off at one ofthe port stops abroad.* As they are rowing out, they see a police vessel coming for them. Magwitch sees Compeyson in the vessel and tries todive after him.* Magwitch is arrested and injured. He tells Pip to visit him in jail, but only when Mr. Wemmick is available toaccompany him.


* Magwitch's trial is delayed because he has to be identified by a man who had been on the ship from which he escapedyears ago. Herbert takes a trip to Cairo.* Mr. Wemmick asks Pip to take a walk with him, and they wind up at Mr. Wemmick's wedding where Pip is surprisedto play the best man. Wemmick tells him not to tell Mr. Jaggers.


* Magwitch is sentenced to death with 31 other people. Magwitch says that God gave him his sentence of death first.* Pip goes to visit Magwitch ten days before his execution. He tells Magwitch his daughter is alive. Magwitch raises hishand at hearing this, and then dies.


* Pip falls ill and is unable to pay any of his debts. He is arrested, but falls unconscious from his illness. When he wakesup, he is at Joe's house.* Pip learns that Miss Havisham is dead, Orlick has been arrested for breaking into Mr. Pumblechook's house, and Piphas been set free after Joe pays all of his debts.* Pip feels that he may want to marry Biddy. When he tries to find her, he learns that Joe and Biddy are now married. Pipcongratulates them, and promises Joe he will pay him back.* Pip gets a job as a clerk where Herbert works. He does well, and just as he is about to become one of the partners,Clarriker tells Herbert what Pip did for him.

* After being gone for 11 years, Pip comes back to see Joe and Biddy, who have named their son Pip. Joe takes Pip tosee his parents' graves.* Pip goes to Miss Havisham's house and sees Estella. Mrs. Joe - This is another name for the cruel aunt who is killed after a brutal attack.

Abel Magwitch - This character is an escaped criminal who makes his fortune in Australia and funds the education ofthe boy who had been kind to him when he escaped from the prison.

Molly - This character is a lawyer's maid who has strange scars on her wrists, as though she were once shackled. Heronly daughter has been adopted by a rich woman.

Orlick - This character is a big, unhappy clod who works at a forge until he insults his boss' wife and is fired.

John Wemmick - This character's house is a miniature castle with a tiny moat, drawbridge, and a cannon which thecharacter fires each evening because it delights his deaf father.

Wemmick's Aged Parent - This character is old and deaf, and he responds to almost all conversation by smiling andyelling, "All right, John!"

Mr. Wopsle - This character is an aged actor who recognizes the angry partner of the anonymous benefactor of the maincharacter's education.

Hammersmith - This is the suburb where Pip's tutor, Matthew Pocket, lives with his family.

Richmond - This is the suburb where Estella lives when she moves into the city.

Walworth (or Wemmick's Castle) - A very impressive homestead built by Pip's friend. His friend lives here with hisfather. His friend has invented all types of novelties and built rituals around the house for the Aged P's amusement.

Finches of the Grove - A snobby boy's club which Pip and Herbert join in the city.

Chink's Basin - A location on the river where Magwitch is to lie and wait for Pip to fetch him when they make theirescape. Herbert's fiance and her father live in a house here.

The Blue Boar - An inn in Pip's village where he often stays during his visits home.

London - After receiving the news of his inheritance, Pip travels here, where his gentlemanly education is to begin.

When Pip goes to retrieve Joe from a tavern, the Three Jolly Bargemen, he meets a stranger who stirs a drink with an oldfile. Pip realizes that this stranger must know the convict whom he helped. The stranger gives him a guinea wrapped insome one-pound notes.


When Pip goes to Miss Havisham's house for the second time, he meets a pale, young gentleman who challenges him tofight, fisticuff style. Pip knocks him down and gives him a bloody nose. Later, Pip gives him a black eye. After that, theypart amicably.

Lesson 1

Objective: Chapter 1 | Chapter 2 Great Expectations is a long book that involves a number of intertwining story lines,characters, and plot twists. Following this mess of literary devices can be difficult when coupled with the challenginglanguage that Dickens uses. The objective of this lesson is to create a plot map so that following the rest of the book willbe easier and enjoyable.

1) 1) Discuss some different ways of mapping the plot. Open it up for discussion and take ideas and suggestions fromclass members. Choose the way you wish to map the plot in the classroom, and then have each student choose their ownpersonal way that will help them the most. Checking on this assignment can be a continual process.

2) Review each separate character that is in the introduction along with their descriptions. Have the students identify eachcharacter named, and the classify them as the protagonist, a main character, a minor character, a foil, etc.

3) Have a list of all the different settings that will be presented in this book. Have the students write down each of thesesettings, as well as which characters will appear in each setting.

4) Divide the group into 3 or 4 smaller groups, and have them each act out a piece of the first two chapters for the class.Give them 10 minutes of preparation time, and perhaps a box of possible props and costumes. When they are finished,have the students write a quick synopsis about the character they played, and what they learned about that character fromthis exercise.

Lesson 3

Objective: Chapter 5 | Chapter 6 Pip breaks the law a number of times in these chapters in an effort to save the convictfrom the marsh. The objective of this lesson is to discuss some of these instances and to discuss their effects on theconvict Pip helps, as well as on his family.

1) 1) Have the students skim through the chapters and identify the laws that Pip breaks (i.e., aiding a convict, stealing,lying to state officials, obstructing justice, etc.) Have the students call them out as you write them on the board. Have thestudents write about how they would feel if they lived in this kind of environment. Allow a few students to read theirwork.

2) Read aloud with the class the section where the convict lies to protect Pip. Discuss this with the class. What happens?Why is the convict doing this? What would you have done? On the board, write a rough daily schedule for Pip. Next to this schedule, have theclass help write out a rough schedule for their school life at Pip's age. Using this chart and the book as a guide, have thestudents write a compare/contrast essay about the two schedules.

2) Pip is not able to learn much while he is at school. Discuss this with the class. What kind of effect do you think thiswill have on his life? What effect would it have had on yours? How important is education to you? What things does Pipmiss by being put to work instead of being taught? Have the students write a short description of where Pip's life couldbe if he were allowed a proper education. How would it differ from the life he is currently leading? Discuss this with the class. How can one word have somany different meanings? Which meanings are surprising? How does the dictionary's definition compare with thestudents' definitions? Is there something missing? What do we need to add to make it whole? How do you think thisapplies to the assigned reading?

2) Split the class into groups and assign each group one of the main characters from this book. Have each group compilea list of the ways their assigned character shows ambition. Make sure they cite examples from the text to support theirideas. Allow each group to present their lists.

How do you think this applies to the assigned reading?

2) Read aloud with the class the section where Pip is confronted by Biddy after getting his new suit and is remindedabout what he could have been. Objective: Chapter 21 | Chapter 22 Pip and Herbert go from hating to loving each other through the course of this book.The objective of this lesson is to discuss how such extreme feelings can exist between people, and how such a positivechange was able to occur.

1) 1) Have some volunteers act out the scene where Pip and Herbert fight each other at Miss Havisham's. Now havesome volunteers read the first impressions that these two boys have of each other after meeting one another in their newapartment together. Have the students write an essay about how this change comes to be. How can these characters gofrom having an intense fight to being such fast friends?

2) Have the students skim these chapters to find reasons that these boys give for liking each other so much. Write theseon the board as they are called out. Have the students choose their favorite of all of these instances and write about howthat event changes the course of their friendship, and what it could be foreshadowing for the future of the plot. Make surethey use examples from the book to support their ideas. Allow some volunteers to read their work, one for each item ifpossible.

3) Herbert and Pip have some incredible obstacles to overcome in their friendship. Have the students write a list of thesechallenges that face their friendship. Have the students write about how these boys overcome each of these obstacles, andhow each trial leads to the fostering of a strong friendship. Allow some volunteers to read their work.

4) Pip's and Herbert's impressions of each other change dramatically throughout the book. Have the students write abouthow their personal opinion of one of these characters has changed from their initial feelings about them. What did youthink at the beginning? How do feel about them now? Have each student select one of the items discussed and write a short essay about why thatparticular thing could effect the general feeling of a certain place. Allow some volunteers to read their work.

2) Split the class into two groups. Have one group create a poster that depicts the marshes, and have the other groupcreate a poster that depicts London. If more groups are needed, you can include some of the specific places in London orthe marshes. Let the students use paint, markers, glue, magazines, etc. Let each group present their poster. Discuss thedifferent images used and how these places affect the feeling of these chapters.

3) There are certain places in our lives that always make us feel a certain way. This can be in a positive or a negativeway. Have the students select a character other than Pip and write a detailed description about what one of the settings inthis book is like for the character. Where is the place? How does it make them feel? Why do they feel this way? Howoften do they go here? Allow some students to read their work.

4) Pip finds joy in his surroundings in London even though he is a little overwhelmed. Have the students identify reasonsPip gives for loving his life in London. Write these responses on the board as they are discovered and called out. Haveeach student rank these items in order of most to least important. Allow some volunteers to read their list and discuss thedifferences and similarities in the rankings.

Objective: Chapter 25 | Chapter 26 All of the characters have different first impressions of Drummle when they meethim. The objective of this lesson is to discuss the importance of first impressions and how these impressions could affectthe outcome of the book.

1) 1) Read aloud with the class the section where Pip describes his first impression of Drummle. Have each student writedown their own first impressions of Drummle based on this description. Allow some volunteers to read their work.

2) Read aloud with the class the section where Jaggers talks about his first impression of Drummle. Discuss this with theclass. Why does he feel this way? Is this the same impression you got of him? Do you think this image will change? Whyor why not? What does this impression say about Drummle himself? Why is this impression so markedly different fromPip's first impression of him?

1) 1) Read aloud with the class the section where Pip says he would love to see Joe and Biddy again, but does not want tobe reminded of his old and poor lifestyle. 1) 1) Have the students make a list of what they think are the top five motivating factors in this book. Allow each studentto read their list. Write each new item on the board. Discuss this with the class. What is the most common motivation?What is the least common? Do any of these responses surprise you? How are these motivating factors working togetherto move the plot along?

Objective: Chapter 31 | Chapter 32 Pride and vanity are the obvious main themes of this book. The objective of thislesson is to discuss the difference between these terms and to analyze some of the ways these attributes are exhibited bythe main characters.

1) 1) Write on the board in large letters the words "pride" and "vanity." Have each student write their own definitions ofthese words, but tell them that they are not allowed to use the word "pride" in the vanity definition, and vice-versa. Haveeach student read their definitions. Write the dictionary's definitions on the board. Discuss this with the class. How arethese two terms similar? How are they different? Was it hard to write a definition without using the other word? Whichdefinition did you like best? How does this relate to the assigned reading?

2) Have the students split into two groups, and assign one group Estella, and the other group Pip. Give both groups a setamount of time and tell them that in order to win, they must have the most examples of pride or vanity exhibited by theirassigned character. Have them flip through the book to find all the examples they can. Have each group read theirexamples and assign a winner.

3) Estella states that his pride, while a failing, has led Pip to his great success. Have the students write about how thismight be true. How can pride create success? How can something viewed as so negative create such positive affects?Make sure the students use examples from the book to support their ideas. Allow some volunteers to read their work.

4) Estella and Pip are not, by any means, the only characters afflicted with pride and vanity. Provide the students with alist of all the characters they have met thus far, and have them write about how each character has exhibited one, or both,of these failings. Have thestudents categorize these criticisms as either "constructive" or "destructive." Discuss this with the class. Which categoryholds more items? Does this surprise you? Why or why not? 2) Read aloud with the class the section where Estella is openly critical of Pip. Objective: Chapter 35 | Chapter 36 Pip's lack of discipline is really what leads to his horrible financial situation. Theobjective of this lesson is to discuss the importance of discipline in Pip's life and society, and examine some of the effectsof a lack of discipline.

Theobjective of this lesson is to explore some of the ways she treats other people better than her dearest friends, and to findparallels of this in the student's own lives. The students will evaluate the effect of this in Estella's and their own lives andtry to find ways to avoid this in the future.

1) 1) Read aloud with the class the section of the book where Pip reproaches Estella for her coldness. Have the studentsskim the book and write on the board all the examples of this poor treatment to Pip. Now have thestudents write about why those characters chose each of the people they did with whom to share their semi-secretmaterial. Allow some students to read their ideas. Discuss this with the class. What elements are common to manydifferent people? Where does trust fit? Why should you only confide in people you trust? What is the danger in trustingsomeone? 2) Read aloud the section where Magwitch asks Pip if he and Herbert can keep a secret. Have the students break intopairs. The objective of this lesson is to discuss thepower of remorse, and to examine the different ways that this reaction could affect the course of the plot.

1) 1) Write on the board in large letters the word "remorse." Have the students each write their personal definition of thisword. Allow each student to read their definition. Now write the dictionary's definition on the board. Discuss this withthe class. How can one term mean so many different things? Which definition do you like best? What would have to beadded to, or removed, from the dictionary's definition to make it more accurate? How does this relate to the assignedreading?

2) Read aloud with the class the section where Miss Havisham expresses her feelings of guilt and remorse to Pip. Havethe students write a personal narrative or inner monologue for Miss Havisham during this experience. What is shethinking? What is she feeling? Is she surprised? What does she plan to do about this? Allow some volunteers to read theirwork.

3) Miss Havisham is resorted to tears and is crazed over honest remorse for the pain she has caused Pip, and thismotivates her to do better in the future and put aside her vengeful feelings. Have the students write about a how theremorse she is feeling is allowing her to let go of the burden she has been carrying for almost her entire life. Make surethey use examples from the book to substantiate their ideas. Allow some volunteers to read their work.

4) Split the class into groups. Have each group write a list of positive and negative consequences of the remorse thatMiss Havisham feels. Make sure they use examples from the book to support their ideas. Allow each group to presenttheir lists. Discuss this with the class. Which list is longer? Which list is easier to write? Which list is most likely to betrue? Do any of these answers surprise you? Why or why not?


6) For Homework: Have the students predict what effects they think this new remorseful side of Miss Havisham willhave on the remainder of the plot.

Objective: Chapter 51 | Chapter 52 There are a number of important letters sent and received in these chapters. Theobjective of this lesson is to discuss the meaning and importance of these letters and to examine how thesecommunications could affect the course of the plot.

1) 1) Read aloud with the class the section where Wemmick sends the boys a letter telling them that they must travelabroad soon. Discuss this with the class. Why do they have to go abroad? Why does this sound so urgent? Why wouldMr. Wemmick be communicating with them through a letter rather than in face? What does this say about the nature ofthis correspondence?

2) Read aloud with the class the section where Pip sends a letter to Mr. Wemmick's brother-in-law to get Herbert a placeof employment with him. Have the students write about how this event makes them feel. Are you surprised by this? Doyou think Herbert will be? Why is Pip doing all of this in private? How do you think Herbert will respond? Where hasthis kind of behavior been observed previously?

3) Read aloud with the class the letter that Herbert receives concerning Provis. Split the class into groups and assign eachgroup one of the following: Who, What, When, Where, and Why. Have each group take their assigned question andanalyze the answer concerning the mysterious letter about Provis. Who wrote it? About what do they want to meet?When is it written? Why is it sent? Make sure they use examples from the book to substantiate their ideas. Allow eachgroup some time to present their information.

4) Have the students each select one of the letters, and write a response as if from the viewpoint of the receiver of theletter. Allow some volunteers to read their work, one for each letter if possible.


6) For Homework: Have the students write an essay about what message they think Dickens is trying to convey throughthe juxtaposition of these letters in these chapters.

Lesson 27

Objective: Chapter 53 | Chapter 54 Revenge is a huge theme in this book and plays a key role in these two verysignificant chapters. The objective of this lesson is to discuss revenge and the affect that is can have on both the plot andour lives.

1) 1) Write on the board in large letters the word "revenge." Have the students take some time to write some one wordresponses to this word. Have each student read their list, and write each new item on the board. Discuss this with theclass. How long is this list? How many terms are repeated? How does this list make you feel? What significance doesthis have on the assigned reading?

2) Read aloud with the class the section where Orlick tries to kill Pip. Have the students skim through this scene to findall of the reasons Orlick gives for wanting to kill Pip. Write each of these items on the board as they are discovered andcalled out. Split the class into groups and assign each group one of the items. Instruct each group to write about how thisitem affected the plot, and whether or not this alone could have been enough to cause Orlick to try to kill Pip. Allow eachgroup to present their information.

3) Miss Havisham broke Pip's heart during the quest to seek revenge on the man who hurt her. Have the students write apersonal narrative from her point of view. Why is she doing this to Pip? What pleasure is she getting from it? Why doesshe continue to hurt him when he has been so kind to her? Why does she regret her actions? Allow some volunteers toread their work.

4) Read aloud with the class the section where Magwitch is captured because of Compeyson's seeking revenge on him.Discuss this with the class. For what is Compeyson seeking revenge? How does the capture of Magwitch benefit him?What other methods could he use to get his revenge? How will this event change the course of the plot?


6) For Homework: Have the students write an essay about what Magwitch's capture could be foreshadowing about thefuture of this plot.

Lesson 28

Objective: Chapter 55 | Chapter 56 Change, and the human reaction to constant change, is a key theme in this book. Theobjective of this lesson is to discuss change and the integral role it plays in life, as well as to analyze some commonreactions and feelings about change.

1) 1) Write on the board in large letters the word "change." Have the students each compile a list of the ways change hasaffected them in the last month. Have each student read their list. Discuss this with the class. How large of a role doeschange play in your life? How do you feel about this? How do you prepare for change? Do you like change? Why or whynot? How do you think this relates to the assigned reading?

2) Have the students skim through the book to find all the different changes that have taken place since the beginning.Write each element of change on the board. Split the class into groups and assign each group one of these elements. Haveeach group write about how this change affects the characters in the book and whether or not it is a good change. Alloweach group to present their information. Make sure they cite examples from the text to support their ideas.

3) Read aloud with the class the section where Dickens mentions how change is an integral part of the human experience.Place on the board a number of pictures that represent a change that has occurred in this book (i.e., the seasons, moving,birth, aging, the water cycle, nature, feelings, etc.) Make sure there are enough images for every student in the class.Have each student choose a picture and write their response to this change. How does it affect you? How does it affectthe characters in the book? How important is this change? Is this a positive change? Why or why not? How does thischange altar the course of the plot? Allow each student to read their response to their picture.

4) Each of the characters in this book has undergone significant changes since the beginning of the book. Have thestudents choose a character and write a personal narrative from the point of view of that character. How do they feelabout all these changes? Have they noticed them? To what do they credit these changes? Do they welcome thesechanges? Why or why not? Make sure they use examples from the book to support their ideas. Allow some volunteers toread their work.

5) Have the students write about the changes they think are still to come for their favorite character in the book. Allowsome volunteers to read their work, one for each character if possible.

6) For Homework: Have the students create a work of art in any medium that displays their feelings about change andhow they relate to the plot of the book. Have them also write an explanation of their artistic choices.

Lesson 29

Objective: Chapter 57 | Chapter 58 Love plays a very important part in this story line. There are many differentrelationships, some healthy, some not. The objective of this lesson is to discuss some of the different forms that love cantake, and why it is such a universal symbol.

1) 1) List all of the different relationships we have seen in this book so far:Joe and Mrs. JoeMiss Havisham and ArthurPip and EstellaEstella and DrummleJoe and BiddyHerbert and ClaraMr. Wemmick and his wifeMolly and MagwitchMr. and Mrs. PocketDiscuss how healthy these different relationships are. What are the good things? What are the bad things? Which oneswill really last? What does an ideal relationship look like?

2) Give the students 10-25 minutes to write a short essay about love or a relationship in their own life that mirrors one ofthe relationship patterns described in the book. This can be one of their own, or one they see in others, such as parents,teachers, uncles, etc. Make sure they include examples from the book to support their ideas. Allow a few volunteers toread their work.

3) Much of the plot centers around the journey and progression that is happening between Pip and Estella. Discuss thiswith the class as you write a Before, Now, and After list on the board. Have the students use the book to find examples ofwhat the relationship is like at the very beginning of the book. Then write a list of what their relationship is like rightnow in the book. Then have the students try to predict what changes will take place in their relationship by the end of thebook.

4) Break the class into groups and assign each group one of the couples discussed. Have each group write a short essayabout what affect this relationship has on the plot of the book. Why does Dickens include this in the story? What issignificant about them and their love? How does their relationship affect the other characters? Allow each group topresent their work. Make sure they use details from the book to support their ideas.

6) For Homework: Have the students create a work of art that illustrates their idea of love. It can be in any medium, andmust be brought to the next class. Have them write their own personal definition of love, including details as to how theirwork of art expresses this personal definition.

Objective: Chapter 59 After a long and varied plot line, Charles Dickens ties it all together in the end. The objective ofthis lesson is to discuss where some of the main characters end up and some of the possible reasons for their finalchoices.

1) 1) Have the students read some of the predictions that they have written in essays while studying this book. Discussthis with the class. How many of these come true? How many are way off? Do you prefer your path or Charles Dickens'?Have the students write about whether or not they like the way that Charles Dickens ends his story.

2) Read aloud with the class the section where Pip ends up as a fairly successful clerk living abroad. Have the studentswrite about this twist in the plot. How does Pip end up here? Did you expect this? Why do you think Dickens choosesthis end for Pip? What would you have chosen? Allow some volunteers to read their work.

3) Read aloud with the class the section where Joe tells Pip that he and Biddy named their son after him. Discuss thiswith the class. Do you feel this is a fitting way for Biddy and Joe to end? Where did you picture them? Do you think theydeserve more? Do you think they feel they deserve more? Where else could Charles Dickens taken this couple in theend?

4) Have the students choose their favorite character and write about where they end up at the end of the book. Are yousatisfied with this ending? What would you have changed? Allow some volunteers to read their work, one for eachcharacter if possible.

Whist is a game that is played and enjoyed by a number of characters in this book. Locate the rules for this old game, andplay it with the class. Have the students write about why so many characters in the book would have enjoyed this gameso much.

7. House Names

Each of the great houses in this book had a unique and telling name. Have the students invent names they would give totheir own houses, and have them present their reasons for selecting the name they chose.

8. Disguises

Have the students come up with a list of different people whom Magwitch could have disguised himself as in order tofind safe passage to safety.

Magwitch and Compeyson both have a number of different aliases to keep their true identities hidden. Have the studentscome up with some different names they could have used.

10. Family Tree

By the end of the book, we learn that almost all of the characters are related by blood, birth, marriage, or adoption. Havethe students create a family tree, graph, or some other way of showing these intricate relationships.

11. Hiding the Convicts

Split the class into groups and give each group some time to devise a plan to get Magwitch out of the country withoutbeing noticed by the police or by Compeyson. Give the groups ten minutes to find a way to hide the convict.

12. Finches in the Grove

Pip and Herbert are members of an exclusive club. Have the students study this club and their procedures and hold ameeting in class similar to what the Finches in the Grove would have been like. Afterwards, discuss with the class whythe boys would have been so keen to be involved in a club of this nature.

13. Dioramas

Split the class into groups and assign each group a different setting from the book (i.e., the forge, the marshes, MissHavisham's house, London, the jail, etc.) Have each group create a diorama of their setting, along with a description ofhow this setting affected the plot of the book. Arrange these dioramas in chronological order.

14. Children's Books

Have the students each create one page of a children's picture book version of this book. Assign each student a specificscene, and compile all the pages together.

15. Singing Time

Write a song or poem about your favorite character and sing it for the class. Have a stage set up and allow each student(or pairs of students) to perform their song or poem for the class.

16. Dust Jackets

Create a dust jacket for this book. Have students cover their copy of the book with this dust jacket. As the plotprogresses, have the students add illustrations or quotes to their dust jackets . Tell the students that these will be gradedon their creativity and depth to the plot.

Have the students break into groups. Have each group create a new and more fitting title for this book. Make sure theyare ready to defend their choices.


18. Art in Multiple Mediums

Create a piece of art in any medium that portrays one of the basic themes of the book. Assign different themes to eachgroup. Have the class view all the different pieces of artwork.

20. Punishments
