Students are expected to interact with classmates online in a discussion format on a weekly basis. If any guest speakers are scheduled for course enhancement, students are also expected to attend these forums.

V. METHOD OF INSTRUCTION

This course uses an online (WebCampus) format consisting of primary and secondary discussion postings. All work is based on required textbook reading assignments and journal article research made available through the GBC library or through the Internet.

Students will have a total of eight (8) weeks to complete eight (8) Learning Modules. Students are expected to finish each Learning Module by contributing a brief summary of 200-300 words regarding a chosen journal article relating to the topic of each module (i.e., Primary Response). Students are also expected to contribute at least ONE substantive response to someone else’s summary (i.e., Secondary Response). All articles must be referenced in APA format.

VI. EVALUATION

A. Participation/Contribution 200 Total Points PossibleThe primary and secondary responses are graded according to the Online Discussion rubric posted on Web Campus. Up to 25 points per module can be earned based on research article choice, substance of primary response, APA format, and substance of secondary response.

The topics of discussion related to nursing trends have no right or wrong answers but will give us the opportunity to discuss issues you will encounter as a registered nurse. We will focus on positive aspects of topics in order to develop strategies that you can use as proactive ways of dealing with issues.

B. Nursing ArticlesA portion of your weekly points is based on research article choice and summary. Use recent nursing periodicals only (2006-2011). For Unit II and III, non-nursing current periodicals may be used. Please, do your own research and article selection each week. The article topics can be determined by reading the required Zerwekh chapters listed in each Unit of your syllabus. Citation of your chosen article in correct APA format is required.

C. Written Assignments 300 pointsA resume (150 points) and cover letter (150 points) will be completed by each student. See the guidelines for each on the Nursing Trends WebCampus site. The standard for this assignment is very high. You are a professional and you need to

define your own personal and career goals. A resume and letter will project your image and illustrate your educational background, previous employment, and accomplishments to your potential employer.

V. GRADING POLICY AND CRITERIA FOR NURS 261:

The course grade will be based on a percentage of total possible points (500) earned according to the following scale:

A = 100 – 94.00 C = 76.00-76.99A- = 93.99 – 90.00 C- = 75.99 – 70.00B+ = 89.99 – 87.00 D+ = 69.99 – 67.00B = 86.99 – 84.00 D = 66.99 – 64.00B- = 83.99 – 80.00 D- = 63.99 – 60.00C+ = 79.99 – 77.00 F = Below 60.00

Nursing students must maintain a final course grade of 76 or better to remain in the program. It is the student’s responsibility to know his/her grade point average throughout the semester. Refer to Student Handbook for nursing program policies.

Due dates and times: ALL primary responses are due by 11:59 pm, Thursday of each week. All secondary responses are due by 11:59 pm, Sunday of each week. Due dates for your Resume assignments are as followed:

X. ACADEMIC HONESTY:

Great Basin College considers academic honesty one of its highest values. A student who obtains academic credit for work that is not the product of his or her own effort is being dishonest and undermining the academic integrity of the college. Students are expected to be the sole authors of their work. Use of another’s ideas must be accompanied by specific citation and reference. In addition, a learner may not submit the same work for credit in more than one course. The disciplinary consequences of plagiarism and other forms of academic dishonest include non-acceptance of work submitted, a failing grade in the course, and/or or other disciplinary action as outlined in Great Basin College’s Student Conduct Policy.
