R LIFELIFEOur Mission Great Basin College Continuing Education provides lifelong learning and personal enrichment opportunities for rural Nevadans through diverse educational, cultural, career and workforce development courses, activities,and programs.

The majority of Continuing Education courses are not offered for credit and have no final grade assigned. Driver Education courses are graded pass/fail, and a certificate or transcript is issued to those who successfully complete the 30-hour course.

Fees Fees are due and payable at the time of registration. You will be withdrawn from the course if no payment is made one week prior to the class starting date. Course fees vary in accordance with class length, materials, and other factors. Community Education courses receive no state funding and are supported entirely by student fees. No fee waivers are available for faculty or staff of Great Basin College.

UPDATED Continuing Education Refund Policy100% refund if class is cancelled by the college• To cancel a registration, you must contact the Elko Continuing Education

office by phone at 775.753.2231 or in person at least seven days prior to the start of class in order to receive a refund.

• Continuing Education will retain $15.00 of the course fee upon withdrawal from a course by student, and $10 for a student transfer to another course.

• No refund will be issued if the student withdraws fewer than seven days prior to the start of class.

• All refunds of credit card payments will be issued to the same creditcard as the original payment. If your card has expired, account closed, etc. you must notify us at the time of cancellation and you will be refunded by check. No cash refunds will be given. Please allow up to 30 days forprocessing of all credit card and check refunds.

Bob Ross Technique for Oil Painting

Discover the Joy of Painting™ from a certified Bob Ross instructor and complete a painting in class . Learn the wet-on-wet painting method, how to use brushes and knives, and how to blend paints . All supplies are provided and included in the cost of the class . Students may purchase additional supplies (paint kits, aprons, brushes, knives, cleaning materials, frames) from the instructor if they wish to continuing painting on their own . Ceramics:Open Studio

Create with clay! This course is for those with experience, and those with little or no ceramics experience . You will have access to space, equipment, and materials . Experienced ceramic artists will be on hand to answer questions, provide guidance and instruction in both hand building and wheel throwing .

The “open studio” format of this class allows you to work on projects and interests at your own pace . Course fee includes all materials and lab fees including clay, glaze, and firing.

Explore a variety of techniques for manipulating molten glass over the flame of an oxygen-propane torch . This class will cover basic skills for beginners and more difficult challenges for experienced beadmakers.Wear natural fiber (not synthetic) clothing and closed-toe shoes. No artificial nails as they are flammable. Glass will be supplied. Tools and protective eyewear are available to use in class . Bring water to drink and your lunch . This course is designed for photographers who want to to push their skills to the next level by progressing from basic point-and-shoot mode to full creative camera control . Instruction will include pre-planning and execution, photo composition, and advanced camera techniques . Students will learn about time (long) exposures, time-lapse photography, photo-painting, remote shooting, creative use of available light and flash. They will also hear about shooting, using RAW files and post processing techniques.

The instructor will evaluate students’ progress through analytical classroom presentations and review of their images . Class requires a digital camera with manual settings . Class will meet on one or more Saturdays (TBA) for a full day of hands-on instruction .

Career & Professional Training

This program, offered by the University of Nevada, Reno, is designed to assist nonprofits in rural areas. The series of topics will allow nonprofits to strengthen leadership and governance skills; think strategically for future financial needs; learn the elements of grant writing; develop marketing plans, including the use of social media; IRS 990s; handle volunteers; and develop their board; as well as developing policies and procedures that will enhance long-term success .

To earn a certificate in the Rural Nonprofit Management program, a student must complete the full five-day series. Upon completion of the series, a Certificate in Rural Nonprofit Management will be awarded. Many professionals can be served by this unique program: those working in the nonprofit sector, board members and volunteers, those new to the field or those wishing to enter the nonprofit sector.

Tai Chi Ch’uan

Tai Chi is an internal Martial Art by which the student can learn how to exercise the body, the energy and the mind in order to control and focus these internal and external energies . Forms will be taught in order to move this energy flow to strengthen one’s mind and body so they can be used to promote health, longevity, mental freshness, flexibility and balance. Tai Chi stretches and strengthens tendons and muscles while helping the student attain proper posture and balance . It also is superb for easing tension and stress .

Youth Karate

Students will learn and understand the three main components of Kyokushin, which is a stand-up, full-contact karate: basics (kihon), forms (kata), and sparring (kumite) . In this hands-on class, students will practice various hand strikes and kicks with their classmates. Physical fitness is a large component of the class, and students will engage in exercises designed to improve strength, endurance, and flexibility. Discipline and respect for others are also recurring lessons taught throughout the course . 30 hours of driver education is required for Nevada drivers under the age of 18 seeking their driver’s license. This is a comprehensive course covering traffic laws, rules of the road, defensive driving, the costs of vehicle maintenance and insurance, and how to navigate roundabouts . Lessons also stress the dangers of impaired driving and texting while driving . Students successfully completing the course will receive a certificate to present to the DMV as required for obtaining a driver’s license . Please note:1. Enrollment in driver education is not open after the course begins. If you miss the class starting date, you should enroll for the next section.2. Zane has been a practicing attorney for twenty years . His lengthy experience as a general practice lawyer and staff attorney for Elko County District Judges has provided him with unique and valuable insight into the operations of both private and public law offices. While residing in California, he was frequently invited to serve as a guest lecturer and educational panel member for the School of Law at Santa Clara University .

He has taught the law, trial practice and procedures, and law office management skills to both law school students and paralegal students throughout the entire course of his career . He is experienced in both civil and criminal law, as well as, appellate practice . He has successfully presented constitutional arguments before the California Supreme Court, and has been recognized by California and Nevada Judges as a uniquely talented and personable attorney . Dr. Quintard Taylor, Jr. PRESENTERTOPIC: A Brief History of African Americans in Nevada

From July 1, 1998 until June 30, 2018, Quintard Taylor, Jr. was the Scott and Dorothy Bullitt Professor of American History at the University of Washington, Seattle and as such he held the oldest endowed chair at the University. He is now retired and holds the title, the Scott and Dorothy Bullitt Professor Emeritus. Taylor is the author of The Forging of a Black Community: Seattle’s Central District from 1870 through the Civil Rights Era, and In Search of the Racial Frontier: African Americans in the America West, 1528-1990. His Dr. Sam:

His work on African American Western History, African American, African, Afro-Brazilian, and comparative ethnic history has appeared in the Western Historical Quarterly, Pacific Historical Review, Oregon Historical Quarterly, Journal of Negro History, Arizona and the West, the Western Journal of Black Studies, and the Journal of Ethnic Studies. He is also editor of the Race and Culture in the West Series for the University of Oklahoma Press.

This course is designed to help students obtain their Class A Commercial Driver License. A combination of

lecture, discussion, demonstration and video presentations will be used in the classroom. Topics include

state and federal regulations, and pre-trip safety check. Hands on operation of the tractor trailer includes

skills practice, as well as highway and city driving.

Students are required to have their CDL Class A permit, drug screen, DOT physical, and driving record

submitted before the start of class. Students must comply to federal DOT laws. Register for the program

through the Great Basin College Continuing Education office.
