“Grease” Soundtrack Digi-pack analysis. The cover shows a photo of the main characters from the film (Sandy and Danny) facing the camera. The picture is placed on a green background reflecting a style of a photograph stuck onto a page. A pencil is placed next to it creating an idea of someone doodling, and creating this ‘photo album’. As you open it up on either sleeve several photos of scenes from the film are scattered covering the background, much like a photo album. At either edge the corners of several ‘café items’ such as a coffee cup, straws and salt and pepper shakers can be seen. The background is much like a green marble table used as the backdrop of the album and continuing with a café theme. Amongst the photos a ‘menu’ is placed reading ‘Grease’, again incorporating the theme of the film into the design. The flaps fold out to reveal two discs, both styled like vinyl’s, keeping with the theme and time zone of the film. On both side are images of Danny on the right and Sandy on the left, featured in classic scenes from the movie. Under disc one, black and white images of several items are printed of lipstick, chewing gum, a pencil and pen and a love heart doodled saying ‘Sandy + Danny’. These are representative of the character of ‘Sandy’ and her mind frame, placed next to her photo to represent stereotypical female associated iconography. Under disc two images of a comb, a medallion and cigarette are shown representative of the character of Danny and male iconography. The disc is shown in a dark blue perhaps connotating a masculine colour, in contrast to disc one which in red connotates feminine seduction and fieriness. Inside one flap a slip has been added containing a booklet of lyrics to each song featured on the album this could be a marketing trick to entertain and engross the consumers further.

The booklets cover uses the same image as the overall album creating a connection to the two. Inside the design is set out in the format of a notepad with the lyrics printed onto ‘lined paper’ creating a ‘year book’ feel. The crease between each page is also shown with a drawing of a ring binder, creating the look of paper contained into a file.

The back of the digi-pack contains a general numbered list of the songs and times of each track on the album and which disc they can be found on. This is a fundamental feature of the genre being a CD and identifies it as a musical CD.

The overall theme and design of the digi-pack creates a retro feel reflective of the film itself. Many iconic images are used throughout the design to stay focused onto the genre and title of the album and clearly identify the music genre of the CD as a soundtrack.
