The bad news: One of the most pressing issues facing wastewater plants today is the effect of surfactants, or surface activating agents (a fancy name for soap), and how they affect the biological process. These high-molecular-weight soaps are used in industrial formulations as well as cleaners in schools and cafeterias, and by companies that have a high standard for cleanliness. Every September when kids go back to school, we get calls from small municipal plants that sud-denly start bulking and foaming. Unfortunately, when water temperatures are cold, it is especially difficult to break down surfactants. Surfactants are gener-ally long, stable molecules that often foam up and can cause bulking and dis-persion of the mixed liquor. Surfactants “make water wetter,” meaning they lower the surface tension of the water. This is how a soap cleans and also how it breaks up the floc and creates a high TSS effluent. Even worse news: When they do finally start to break down, surfactants can form intermediaries that affect nitrification and ammonia removal.

Generated when sewage becomes stagnant or septic, Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) is infamous for a noxious “rotten egg” odor. Watch out – if the DNR or EPA gets a whiff of hydrogen sulfide wafting from your wastewater, they might go from breathing deep to breathing down your neck! Hydrogen Sulfide ToxicityHydrogen sulfide (H

2S) is a colorless, toxic, and

flammable gas. Hydrogen sulfide is considered a broad-spectrum poison, meaning it can poison several different systems in the body, although the nervous system is most affected.


WHAT CAUSES FOAMING?EVERY FOAM DOES HAVE A SPECIFIC WEAKNESS. THE MORE YOU UNDERSTAND IT, THE MORE EFFECTIVE YOU WILL BE AT TREATING IT.

We could write a book on the many possible causes of foam in activated sludge – young bacteria, old bacteria, or no bacteria. Aggravating the problem are surfactants, greases, and fatty acids. Two hard-to-treat filaments are the main culprits behind excessive foaming in a WWTP: Nocardia is sticky to the touch and can foam anywhere from 3 to 20 feet high. The only way to control Nocardia is to prevent it by stopping grease from entering your system. Microthrix Parvicella produces a dark brown, matted foam that is 6 to 12 inches thick. When water temperatures dip below 55°F, fat and grease break down into fatty acids. When warm spring temperatures arrive, the fatty acids that have built up in the system cause Microthrix Parvicella to bloom. When this happens, the basin rapidly fills with foam.

A customer in central Alabama had an SBR system that was having an ongoing issue with Microthrix Parvicella. It was causing bad foaming, poor settling, and a cloudy effluent. This plant was out of compliance and needed immediate help. Their flow rate was 100,000 GPD.
