WHY YOU DO WANT TO GO ORANGE

BEAUTY

IT ALL STARTED WITH MAC’S NOW INFAMOUS LIPSTICK IN M’ORANGE. After being spotted by beauty editors at all the hottest S/S ’08 shows, it quickly sold out and became summer’s most covetable new shade. The orange trend quickly gathered pace and it’s become nothing short of this summer’s beauty phenomenon. “It’s exactly the shade that everybody needs to get in the mood for summer,” says MAC’s head of artistry Terry Barber. “Orange is the perfect antidote to the vampiness of last season but still has enough to pack a punch.” A fruit punch, we presume…

Eye essentialsThere’s nothing like adding a new twist to an old classic and at Grazia we’re loving this season’s dusky orange eye shadow. First spotted at Dior’s S/S ’08 show, make-up guru Pat McGrath showed us that sultry doesn’t have to mean smoky when she blended tangerine from lash line to brow bone. “Just like your average sultry eye it’s all about blending and building up colour gradually,” says Terry. First blend a light layer of Make Up For Ever Powder Blush in No.48 [1], Dhs83, as a base. Next, sweep a warmer shade of matte powder eye shadow; try MAC Eyeshadow in Orange [2], Dhs65, over your entire eyelid, fading out towards the outer corner. “Black mascara is essential,” says Terry. We’ve been applying L’Oréal Telescopic in Carbon Black [3], Dhs69.

Your NEW summer staplesJust as bold as last season’s red lipstick, but much more modern, the new ‘tomato’ lip colour will instantly update your look. The way to wear it now? “Take your choice,” says Terry. “Go matte and neon like Charlotte Tilbury created at Temperley or try the glossy finish seen at Just Cavalli.” Both work just as well for summer and, whether you’re making the switch from red to orange or dipping your toes into the colour pool for the first time, the rules from the runway are simple:1 Look out for shades of orange with more citrus undertones to give the most modern finish. 2 Rediscover lip liner to give that ‘sharp’ edge. 3 Going glossy? Backstage make-up artists built up the intensity by layering a gloss over a matte lipstick. The cutting-edge colour wash“Looking to edge up your summer make-up subtly? Then this is the way to go,” says Terry. And, surprisingly, applying a sheer wash of pale orange on to your eyes, lips and cheeks is not only very fashion forward but also a fast route to a healthy glow. The trick is finding the perfect colour palette of apricots to use all over your face and expertly blending them into a wash effect. Backstage at the shows, make-up artists revealed that instead of brushing on tans, golds and taupes, the newest way to fake a sun-drenched complexion is to smudge rich, smouldering shades of orange on to your cheeks and forehead. “It actually gives a really natural finish to your skin, especially when it’s applied over a natural tan,” says Terry. He suggests choosing cream-based blushers and applying them along your cheekbones, down the centre of your nose and over your forehead. “Don’t be too neat and really press the colour into your skin for the best finish.” [1]Clarins Multi-Blush in Apricot, Dhs97[2]Stila Cream Blusher in Gladiola, Dhs130[3]Givenchy Prisme Again Blush in Euphoric Orange, Dhs162 – brush high on to the apples of your cheeks and down the centre of your nose [4]Clarins Lipstick in Orange Fizz, Dhs93 – press into your lips to get colour without too much definition [5]Giorgio Armani Eye Shadow in Maestro No.5, Dhs125 ■
