For my Irish Uncle, March always meant Saint Patrick’s Day, corned beef and cab-bage, boiled potatoes and dark beer of any color. Brisk days of wind and sun were a sure sign that spring was upon the land and life would be good.

Kansas City has less corned beef than Limerick, but the message of March is the same. The time for planting is at hand.

In the garden, cold weather root crops of all kinds can now be planted. Red and white onions and seed potatoes to be boiled or baked are in stock and ready to plant.

Seeds, cold weather plants like beans, peas and radishes may now be planted. Starter plants of cold crops like lettuce,

cabbage, broccoli and brussel sprouts may be set out. Some for the rabbits and some for you. Rabbits after all, are just leprechauns with fur coats.

For landscape planting bare rootstock, English Garden hostas, bleeding hearts, lily of the valley and dozens more may be planted now at tremendous cost savings. Planting rootstock now available in March, can save fifty to eighty per-cent over mature plants purchased later in May.

Find a picture you like in a mail order garden catalogue, take it to the Grass Pad. They probably have it in stock and can tell you if it will do well in the Kansas City area.

For the lawn, now is the time to fill in winter dead spots. Seeding projects started early give grass plants a head start on nasty weeds which sprout with hot summer weather. Fast starting seed blends like Macho Mix, Green Love, or Estate Mix will come up even in cool spring soils. These should be fertilized with Golf Course Starter once now and again in three weeks.

In spring bare spots, the race is on. It will be grass or weeds. For homeowners who get to the Grass Pad now it will be grass. For those who fiddle it will be ugly weeds.

Now is the time to kill the ugly sum-mer weeds that plan to ambush your

lawn as soon as summer soil temperatures heat up. Crabgrass, foxtail, gooseg-rass, barnyard grass and all the other ugly annual summer weed grasses lie dormant in the soil waiting to sprout and ruin your well tended Kansas City lawn.

This nasty weedgrass inva-sion takes place every year when lawn soil temperatures reach 55 degrees. These alien seeds will sprout sooner in bare spots that are open to the sun, usually in open areas on the west and south. The warm cracks around your driveway, patio and sidewalk will be crabgrass heaven. Depending on the year, this ugly barnyard hatch usually takes place during mid-April.

As Kansas City homeown-ers walk through their spring-time lawns, they all have the same question. What is this strange little weed??? In the lawn,springtime bares-pots will be filled with one of Mother Nature’s little winter surprises. Winter broadleaf weeds: henbit, chickweeed, oxalis, dandelions, and an occasional thistle have spout-ed in the lawn wherever there is a bare spot. Some have little flowers: purple, yellow or white. No matter how cold. No matter how much snow

and ice. No matter how good your lawn looked last fall. It now looks like the salad bar at Price Chopper.

These small winter broad-leaf weeds can be controlled with the right weed control program. They are not con-trolled by pre-emergents. A traditional Step # 2 Weed and Feed will not work well until cold soil temperatures warm up in April. Likewise their small leaves make them a difficult target for weed spray.

Uncle says the best way to kill these little winter broad-leaves is with a cold weath-er liquid weed killer Speed Zone. Uncle says make sure to use Gordon’s Spreader Sticker to help the spray stick to the small waxy leaves and use the stronger mixing formula. Also, be patient. At cold soil temperatures these plants die more slowly and you may need a second application after seven to ten days.

Can I seed now? The answer is almost always: YES! 70% of all grass seed sold in the United States is sold for spring seeding. Today’s lawn problem need attention today. March days provide Kansas City homeowners with a chance to get the jump on spring over-seeding projects.

Grass seed varieties sown in March have an 8-week head start on the weed and insect season, which begins in ear-nest in mid-May. Bugs and weeds prefer hot weather. Insect eggs hatch, weed seeds sprout, thicken and spread as soil, and air temperatures rise.

Many Kansas City lawns are hybrid forms of bluegrass and fine leaf ryegrass. These grass varieties prefer cool soil and air temperatures. During cold winter months, their root systems continue to grow. As spring comes, these deep root systems help the grass thicken and send up new plants. Early spring fertilizer helps fill in bare spots before air temperatures increase and weeds become aggressive.

Spring seeded bluegrass requires more time to sprout than fine leaf rye. March seed-ing exposes the seed to the nat-ural freezing and thawing cycle of early spring. This swelling and drying help crack the outer shell of the seed. When soil temperature becomes warm enough the bluegrass plant is ready to sprout. Seed sown in this fashion will come up two to three weeks sooner than bluegrass that is not sown until warm weather arrives.

Avoid common bluegrass varieties especially in the spring. However, hybrid blue-grass mixes such as Estate Mix containing perennial sports rye will germinate much more quickly in cold soils and will be well established by summer.

Perennial sports turf ryes, such as Stadium Special do

particularly well in this region. These hybrids sprout quickly in cold soil and can survive hot summer weather. Bare spots may be raked and covered with PrimeraFC seed dressing chips or sphagnum peat. But, if the soil is too wet or weather does not permit, these seed varieties may be sown directly over the lawn without raking or sown over a light snow cover. The seed itself is large and has a food reserve that allows the grass plant to sprout and sur-vive without ideal soil contact.

Turf-type fescue does not like cold weather. Fescue lawns often stay a muddy brown even after their blue-grass neighbors have started to show a bright spring green up. Macho Mix is recom-mended for March seeded fescue. Containing 5% peren-nial sports turf rye, Macho Mix seeded in this fashion sprouts one to two weeks sooner than fescue held until warm weather before sowing.

The biggest enemy of spring seeded fescue is brown patch disease that comes in May and June. New seedlings are more susceptible to brown patch than older more mature grass plants. Turf-type tall fescues that have shown the best resistance to brown patch are Heat Wave, Cochise 4, or Macho Mix. Granular Fungus Fighter may also be applied in mid-May to help young plants through this critical period.

Golf Course Starter fertil-izer applied to the new seed in March will help the seed mature more quickly. An April applica-tion of Tupersan or Siduron will help prevent crabgrass and foxtail in newly seeded areas as the grass plants mature. Broadleaf dandelion killers should be avoided until the new seed has been mowed two times.

The basic rule is simple. Homeowners who put on a sweater today and get their spring lawn projects started now will be months ahead of their neighbors who wait for short sleeve weather.

Magnolias: The early bloom on these favorites will pump up any yard or garden. Show off the planta-tion with the Royal Star or a Saucer Magnolia. The white flower of the Royal Star and the pink blossoms of the Saucer Magnolia will soon be showing around Kansas City. These are both classics that thrive in our area. The “Jane” magnolia has been around for a while but, is a very under used variety. Scarlet paid a bundle to plant these at Tara. The Sweet Bay magnolia, a magnificent glossy green leafed tree with a late bloom-ing white flower, is a favorite with our cus-tomers. Also available, the Brackens Brown Beauty magnolia is a cold hardy variety of the southern magnolia, with its large glossy ever-

green leaf along with the citrus smell on the summertime blooms is soon to become a classic itself.

Redbuds: They’re not just red-buds anymore. Enjoy the beautiful

pink buds of the traditional Eastern Redbud, or try some of the new vari-eties, the bright purple buds of the

Oklahoma Redbud, the white flower of the White Bud, or the bur-gundy leaf of the Forest Pansy Redbud.

Crabapples: With spring flowers and win-ter color, crabapples have always been a springtime favorite at the Grass Pad. These are a few of our most popular. The Royal Raindrops and Prairie Fire with their excellent disease resistance and bright red flower are at the top of our most want-ed list. Spring Snow, with its white flower and green leaf, is the only fruitless variety of cra-bapple. Sargenti cra-bapples are very small

ornamentals that retain their fruit and are great for bird habitats.

When it comes to native grasses, Kentucky blue-grass is truly Mother Nature’s M a s t e r p i e c e .

When left untended in the wild, this tough productive grass will aggres-sively crowd out most other grass varieties including fescues. As recently as 40 years ago, the majority of the bluegrass seed grown in the country was grown and processed right here in our area.

Bluegrass will make the most desirable lawn with the least effort of any turfgrass species for 10 months out of the year. Improved varieties of Kentucky bluegrass produce the darkest green color available for lawn grasses. Bluegrass has runners that allow it to spread, fill in bare spots, and repair itself from damage. This turf quality makes it more wear toler-

ant than fescues or buffalo grasses and ideal for safe playing surfaces on sports fields or front lawns.

Local sod growers who take pride in their turf know the bluegrass secret. In cool weather, feed it hard and mow it close and the weeds will disappear.

While bluegrass requires some

irrigation to maintain summer color, mature bluegrass can survive extend-ed droughts in a dormant state. Irrigating bluegrass with 1 inch of

water on ten day intervals in July and August and reduced mowing will sus-tain most bluegrass color.

Hybrid Kentucky bluegrass variet-ies recommended for Kansas City include Merit, Gateway, Blue Wave or Leawood Blue.

These varieties show character-istics for dark color, disease resistance, heat tolerance, and wear ability that make them an excellent choice for Kansas City lawns. Estate Mix, which includes some sports turf perennial ryegrass, is an excel-lent choice for spring seeding.

Step 1- Mow the lawn to a height of 1 1/2" to 2".

Step 2- Rake or sweep the lawn to remove heavy clippings or other debris. Rough the surface of the soil

giving special attention to bare spots.

Step 3- Apply Golf Course Starter fertilizer at 6 lbs. per 1000 sq. ft. or for large lawns use Renovator at 3 lbs. per sq. ft.

Step 4- Spread the seed with a rotary or a hand cranked “whirlwind” spreader. Special attention should be given to spots where the ground is bare. Extra seed should be applied by hand to these spots.

Step 5- On bare spots apply a light mulch of sphag-num peat or PrimeraFC seed dressing. Topsoil & black peats contain weed seeds and should not be used.Step 6 -Water the seedbed lightly so the soil surface is moist. For my Irish Uncle, March always meant Saint Patrick’s Day, corned beef and cab-bage, boiled potatoes and dark beer of any color. Brisk days of wind and sun were a sure sign that spring was upon the land and life would be good.

Kansas City has less corned beef than Limerick, but the message of March is the same. The time for planting is at hand.

In the garden, cold weather root crops of all kinds can now be planted. Red and white onions and seed potatoes to be boiled or baked are in stock and ready to plant.

Seeds, cold weather plants like beans, peas and radishes may now be planted. Starter plants of cold crops like lettuce,

cabbage, broccoli and brussel sprouts may be set out. Some for the rabbits and some for you. Rabbits after all, are just leprechauns with fur coats.

For landscape planting bare rootstock, English Garden hostas, bleeding hearts, lily of the valley and dozens more may be planted now at tremendous cost savings. Planting rootstock now available in March, can save fifty to eighty per-cent over mature plants purchased later in May.

Find a picture you like in a mail order garden catalogue, take it to the Grass Pad. They probably have it in stock and can tell you if it will do well in the Kansas City area.

For the lawn, now is the time to fill in winter dead spots. Seeding projects started early give grass plants a head start on nasty weeds which sprout with hot summer weather. Fast starting seed blends like Macho Mix, Green Love, or Estate Mix will come up even in cool spring soils. These should be fertilized with Golf Course Starter once now and again in three weeks.

In spring bare spots, the race is on. It will be grass or weeds. For homeowners who get to the Grass Pad now it will be grass. For those who fiddle it will be ugly weeds.

Now is the time to kill the ugly sum-mer weeds that plan to ambush your

lawn as soon as summer soil temperatures heat up. Crabgrass, foxtail, gooseg-rass, barnyard grass and all the other ugly annual summer weed grasses lie dormant in the soil waiting to sprout and ruin your well tended Kansas City lawn.

As Kansas City homeown-ers walk through their spring-time lawns, they all have the same question. What is this strange little weed??? In the lawn,springtime bares-pots will be filled with one of Mother Nature’s little winter surprises. Winter broadleaf weeds: henbit, chickweeed, oxalis, dandelions, and an occasional thistle have spout-ed in the lawn wherever there is a bare spot. Some have little flowers: purple, yellow or white. No matter how cold. No matter how much snow

and ice. No matter how good your lawn looked last fall. It now looks like the salad bar at Price Chopper.

These small winter broad-leaf weeds can be controlled with the right weed control program. They are not con-trolled by pre-emergents. A traditional Step # 2 Weed and Feed will not work well until cold soil temperatures warm up in April. Likewise their small leaves make them a difficult target for weed spray.

Uncle says the best way to kill these little winter broad-leaves is with a cold weath-er liquid weed killer Speed Zone.
