CAREER PURSUINGI don’t plan on pursuing a career in the graphics art and communication field. But I find the field of Graphic Design to be pretty interesting.

Graphic Designers create visual concepts, by hand or using computer software, to communicate ideas that inspire, inform, or captivate consumers. They develop the overall layout and production design for advertisements, brochures, magazines, and corporate reports.

Graphic Designers are employed in specialized design services, publishing, or advertising, public relations, and related services industries.

HISTORY OF GRAPHICS ART/COMMUNICATIONArt as a form of communication has been used for a very long time. The earliest graphics known are cave paintings and markings on boulders, bone, ivory, and antlers, created during the period from 40,000 – 10,000 B.C. Earlier graphics known to the modern world, from almost 6,000 years ago. Egyptians even used graphic art on slabs of limestone to plan the building of the pyramids.

HISTORY (CONTINUED)Different ways of printing was soon invented after forms of writing and letter presses. Litho printing and Offset printing was soon a very common form of printing in the 1800’s.

- In 5000 B.C. Sumerians invent the first written language called Cuneiform. Later in 3000 B.C. the Egyptians developed hieroglyphic writing, which were alphabetic, syllabic, and determinative.

- In 500 B.C. the Roman alphabet, adopted from the Greeks, began to be used. This alphabet is what we use today. It comprised of 23 letters, (ABCDEFGHIKLMNOPQRSTVXYZ). J, U, and W was not used at this time though.

- In 1023, Chinese artisan Pi Sheng made individual, moveable characters out of clay for book printing. This is one of the first forms of printing to be known. Soon, letterpresses were used for printing all around the old world.

- In 1796, Aloys Senefelder of Germany invents the basic lithographic process using a water absorbant stone, grease, water, and ink.

Soon many different forms of printing presses was innovated as well as fonts and types of writings. And even computers and advanced technology that print at the command of one click of the mouse.
