Lesley Wood is a self-taught local artist who works in a number of media, but is partial to pastels. She is a commissioned artist who began drawing when she was 10, almost as young as when she began riding horses. Her work has been featured on The Chronicle of the Horse and has sold to animal lovers across the country including Colorado, the Carolinas, New York and Florida. She is an animal lover who trains, boards and sells horses from her Scottsville, VA farm. She also lives with four cats, a dog and several very loud bullfrogs. Artist Statement The ability to paint with pastels feels natural and seems to flow through me. I especially enjoy the more intricate details of pastel paintings - the braiding of a lead rope or the fine curves and highlights of a well- oiled piece of leather on a horse’s bridle. Nature and its patterns are reflected in the complex ridges of a ram’s horns, in the folds of skin and fur on a mountain lion, the veins that stand out on a moving horse. They are my inspiration to create. In my wildlife drawings, I try to capture the mood, energy, and power of an animal - the things that hold us in awe, like the intense stare of a bird of prey, the raw power and grace of a horse, the elegance of an egret or the confident laziness of a big cat. After sketching a composition, I always begin coloring the eyes and work out from there. It’s the eyes that seem to give the art a certain soul and presence – something concrete and centered from which I can create. Once the eyes are created the piece takes on a life and meaning all its own. Pastels are my medium of choice because of the way they can be blended and layered. I use them to create the graduations of colors in animals and nature. I also like working with rich and vibrant Conte’ canyons. I will often use my fingers to blend and layer them.

The ability to paint with pastels feels natural and seems to flow through me. I especially enjoy the more intricate details of pastel paintings - the braiding of a lead rope or the fine curves and highlights of a well-oiled piece of leather on a horse’s bridle.

Nature and its patterns are reflected in the complex ridges of a ram’s horns, in the folds of skin and fur on a mountain lion, the veins that stand out on a moving horse. They are my inspiration to create.

In my wildlife drawings, I try to capture the mood, energy, and power of an animal - the things that hold

us in awe, like the intense stare of a bird of prey, the raw power and grace of a horse, the elegance of an egret or the confident laziness of a big cat.
