Issue 2 Term 3, 2016

During Term 3 our main focus will be on Strategic Direction 1, 2 & 3 –

Stake Holders will be life-long learners who think critically and creatively; Quality Leadership ensures quality teachers who will innovate and differentiate to inspire our learners; and Our school community will be inclusive, in-formed and engaged.

Instead of attending Professional Learning on the last 2 School Development days of the year (19 & 20 December- students do not attend these days); our teachers have elected to participate in 4 ‘Twilight sessions’ throughout the year. These half day sessions are held after school and have the approval of the Director of Schools- Holroyd

Network.

The goals of the 2008 Melbourne Declaration on Educational Goals f o r Y o u n g Australians provide a clear sense of purpose for all Australian schools. T h e y se t t h e direction for school-ing for the next 10 years and outline what we intend to achieve and why it is important for our

students.

&

Our collective long-term goal is for every student in every school to experience a sense of success, growth, achievement, well-being and belonging; every student, in every school. To achieve our goal we are going to have to do things differently. The NSW syllabuses describe

every student’s curriculum entitlement. Differentiated learning supports all students in being able to access their curriculum

entitlement.

Differentiation is a targeted process that involves forward planning, programming and instruction. It involves the use of teaching, learning and assessment strategies that are fair and flexible, provide an appropriate level of challenge, and engage students in learning

in meaningful ways. (BOSTES 2012)

Thank you to Mrs Kardasis, Mr Milligan, Miss Luongo, Ms Butter and Mrs Stanger who have designed and led the engaging professional learning for our staff in these Twilight

Professional Learning Sessions.

2016 marks the 62nd Education Week in NSW. Public schools across the state will be sharing their success stories with parents and the wider

school community.

This year’s theme, ‘Shared stories, better learning, stronger communities’, acknowledges the important role public schools play in fostering relationships between students, staff and the community; not just here in NSW but throughout

the world.

Public Education unlocks the mysteries of the world for all, and ensures that education is not the sole right of the privileged or rich. I’d like to take time and share a story of 2 schools; these being Granville Public School and Dombulu

Primary School.

All schools, including Granville Public School has both External and Internal Influences which affects curriculum implementation and student improvement, the school has demonstrated exemplary development and growth throughout

the years.

Granville Public School prides itself in developing leaders and this year’s student leadership team have taken the role very seriously, and have set very high standards for the students who will

follow them in the years to follow.

Issue 2 Term 3, 2016 Thursday 11 August 2016

Like all Public Schools in NSW, Granville offers its students a broad

range of experiences to assist in, not only their academic growth but

that of their social growth, self-identity, and tolerance to those from

different cultural, ethnic or religious backgrounds.

Milton Public School Sister School Programme

Indoor Sport activities futsal

Religious and Cultural Activities

Easter Hat Parade

Iftar Dinner

Christmas Carols

Chinese New Year

Vivid

Floriade These, are but a few of the activities provided to all of our school community. In addition to these activities the school offers after school sporting

programmes, which are manned by Mr Ryan and his team.

This in turn is support by our parent programmes, which has seen the introduction of a School Liaison Officer every Friday, Ms Liza Moscatelli; who has organised Zumba classes for parents, workshops

with Granville TAFE.

The school is also working to improve our school grounds by developing an atmosphere which is happy and safe for our children which ensures that learning, respect and safety are the everyday

norms for all involved at Granville Public School.

However, not all public education systems are supported like that of the NSW Public Education System; this was brought home to me on a recent visit to Vanuatu where I was shown that outside of the popular tourist areas Public Education is very much the poorer cousin

of our system.

The school I have the pleasure to visit was Dombulu Primary School on Tutuba Island, 20 minutes boat ride from Espiritu Santo. Things

that we take for granted, such as:

Electricity

Mains water

Sewerage systems

Basic teaching resources

CD or DVD players

Readers

Work books

Whiteboards

Laminating sheets

4 year trained educators

Continuous teacher training Such schools have nothing like this and have to do with what is donated to them by tourists or funded for by the teaching staff, from

their own salaries.

Dombulu Primary School, like Granville Public School, prides itself in preparing its students to becoming lifelong learners and positive contributors to society; and preparing them for the bursary examina-tions which will determine if they move onto high school, or finish

school at the completion of year six.

What I would like you to do is:

Share your stories of public education with your friends, peers, colleagues and families; and

Help make your children’s stories fantastic and encourage

them to enjoy and grab hold of every moment that they have

in our magnificent Public Education System; a system that is

held in the highest esteem throughout the world.

Some of the Koala children were observed making what they said was vegetable soup in the sandpit. We thought it was a good idea to make some of our own.

The Koalas went shopping in Granville for the ingredients to make their soup.

After coming back to the preschool and much slicing and dicing, the veggie were placed in our soup maker and a little later, a hearty veggie soup was sampled by many of the children.

Kindergarten students attending the English Language classes participated on a walking excursion to

the local Granville Area on Wednesday 10 August. They visited a variety of locations including

Granville Library and Granville Police station. The excursion was planned to support language

enrichment and to supplement their learning in the classroom for the Human Society and its

Environment unit ‘Places we know.’
