Who We Are

As the state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities, AHF encourages and promotes appreciation of literature, history, law, philosophy and the arts through programs, events and grants to help others discover and share the meanings of life found through the humanities.

Founded in 1974 as a vehicle for awarding grants to grassroots organizations in Alabama, 2014 marked AHF’s 40-year anniversary.

What We Do

Offer opportunities to explore the humanities through free, public programs such as seminars, workshops, lectures, exhibitions, documentary and films.

Initiate major programs and events in support of humanities topics and collaborate with other organizations to advance the humanities in both the academic and public arenas.

AHF is driven to enrich and enhance the lives of Alabamians.

AHF Grants

• AHF awards grants solely to support free public humanities projects.

• Three essential ingredients of a grant: 1) active public participation, 2) involvement of humanities scholars, and 3) strong humanities content.
