Notes ON THE PROGRAM

Mozart’s choices for how to set the“Coronation Mass” are clear. The Gloriaand Credo are set almost syllabically, withone syllable for every note and very fewtext repetitions. Mozart breaks up theGloria into its customary subdivisions byalternating the ensemble of soloists withthe chorus, without slowing down themomentum. The musical structure of theGloria is neatly rounded out into a largeA-B-A structure. He handles the Credo inthe same manner, except for the “Et incar-nates est,” the incarnation, passion, anddeath of Jesus where masses since theMiddle Ages have typically slowed downwith contrasting emotive music.

For the shorter movements Mozart gener-ally keeps up a pretty good clip. In theClassical period the Kyrie was generallyset as a stately opening number befitting

the dignity and importance of the mass.Mozart’s Kyrie is in keeping with thetradition. In the Sanctus the words“Hosanna in excelsis” surround the sub-division “Bene dictus,” which traditionallywas a place for slowing down with a soloensemble. Again, Mozart follows suit.

Like the Kyrie, the Agnus Dei is a textinvolving a three-part prayer. But whilethe Kyrie is a prayer of praise, the AgnusDei is an appeal for mercy. Mozart setsthe first two invocations of the AgnusDei into a long soprano aria, while thefinal invocation, ending “Dona nobispacem,” (Grant us peace) is an extendedreprise of the music of the Kyrie to unifythe entire mass setting.

RALPH VAUGHAN WILLIAMS Dona Nobis Pacem

Ralph Vaughan Williams experiencedthe senseless brutality and carnage ofWorld War I first hand. Although nearly42, he enlisted and served as a wagonorderly with the Royal Army MedicalCorps in France and on the Salonika(Greece) front, later returning toFrance as an artillery officer.

In 1936, anguished at the palpablegathering clouds of another war, hecomposed Dona nobis pacem, in whichhe combined Latin liturgical materialwith biblical texts and modern vernac-ular poetry. He set to music three ofWalt Whitman’s antiwar poems, an

excerpt from John Bright’s famousspeech to the House of Commons dur-ing the Crimean war, (“The Angel ofDeath has been throughout the land”),culminating in a prayer for peace andbrotherhood, and interspersing themwith the invocative refrain “Donanobis pacem” by the soprano fourtimes during the course of the cantata.

The work opens with the soprano andchorus intoning the Agnus Dei, the finalsection of the ordinary of the CatholicMass. Vaughan Williams then begins theseries of violent contrasts he will makethroughout the work: gentle pleading,

Holst completed the St. Paul’s Suite in1913 in thanks to the St. Paul’s Girls’School for providing him with a largesoundproof room for his work. Thisnew studio sported double windows, two pianos, and central heating!Tonight’s program features the firstand final movements from this suite.

The first movement begins with arobust Jig. The final movement,Dargason is introduced very softly, then cellos enter playing the beautifulGreen sleeves and the two folksongsare played together.

GUSTAV HOLST St. Paul’s Suite for String Orchestra, Op. 29,No. 2

gut-wrenching anguish, portrayal of thebrutality of war, and despair.

Whitman’s grim and powerful “Beat!Beat! Drums!” follows without pause, sung by the chorus. Like the drums ofwar, this harsh setting cancels out allother aspects of normal life. Descendingchromatic lines like extended sighs com-bine with the percussive pounding ofthe orchestra.

The contrasting second movement,Whitman’s “Reconciliation,” for bari -tone and chorus, is a heart-wrenchingdepiction of the impact of war on theindividual—after the all-consumingdrums have fallen silent—centeringaround the most moving words “Formy enemy is dead, a man divine asmyself is dead!” There follows againthe soprano’s gentle plea “Donanobis pacem.”

The “Dirge for two veterans” is proba-bly Whitman’s most moving and des-perate condemnation of war. Althoughpenned in response to the ravages ofthe American Civil War, his lines all too

aptly fitted World War I as well.Vaughan Williams actually had com-posed this movement as a separatework a quarter century earlier but ithad never been published or performedbefore its incorporation into Donanobis pacem, where it fits all too wellwith the looming inevitability of anotherwar. His emotions are palpable in theslow funereal march, projecting thesense of doom.

Bright’s famous speech opens the finalsection, declaimed by the baritone oversparse orchestra. Following these fewlines the invocation is shrieked out bythe chorus and soprano as if in terror. The compilation of biblical verses begin-ning with Jeremiah progresses fromdespair to a transcendent combinedprayer and statement of faith in thekingdom of God—perhaps the only truepeace. As if to mirror the renewed senseof hope, the soprano’s final invocation, supported by a cappella chorus, is trans-formed into a gentle uplifting melody.

—Program note by Joseph and ElizabethKahn

Meditation is an exceptionally lyricalwork taken from Jarrett’s Serenade forStrings. The engaging harmonies, slow de -velopment, and full breadth of expressive

opportunities allow our orchestra to strivefor the highest levels of musicianship.

Concerto Grosso No. 1 was composedduring 1925 and 1926 and is scoredfor string orchestra with piano obbli-gato in four movements. The contrast-ing timbres of the strings and the pianosuggest the Baroque figured bass andthe texture is generally contrapuntaland actually polytonal. In the Prelude

the melodic material is often shortand motivic. This piece wonderfullycontrasts the Baroque compositionaltechniques with the 20th-centurytechniques of polytonal clashes andpolymetric shifts.

Dedicatory Fanfare by contemporarycomposer William Cherry follows thetraditional purpose of this type of com-position: to introduce an instrumentalperformance. Fanfares are also wellknown for their use in military bands inthe United States to announce thearrival of the president, a general, or

other high-ranking dignitaries. Thisparticular fanfare is very contemporaryin sound, with rich harmonies, variousstyles, and broad melodic lines, yet itmanages to maintain the pomp and cir-cumstance of the traditional fanfare.

Endurance, by composer TimothyMahr (b. 1956 ), is a reflection on theinfinite endurance of the human spirit, the religious spirit and the spirit of theearth. Initial inspiration for this workcame from a book of the same title byAlfred Landsing, documenting theamazing story of the ill-fated expedi-tions of the Antarctic explorer SirEdward Shackelton in 1914. His shipthe Endurance became ice-bound andeventually sank, stranding Shackelton

and his crew of 27. They survived for15 months exposed to the unrelenting, dangerous Antarctic weather and mirac-ulously lived to tell the tale. Thestrength of character by these men inenduring incredible hardships is trulyawe-inspiring. All three spirits—human, religious, and earth—are intertwined inthis amazing story of human survivalagainst all odds.

Composer Fučík (1872–1917) wasamong the brightest jewels in windband composers. Anyone associatedwith wind band music would haveinstant recognition of Fučík and hisparticular style. In his short, brilliantcareer during which he served as

bandmaster to the 86th HungarianInfantry Regiment at Budapest, Fučíkdeveloped his own wide-ranging styleof writing marches. This was a popu-lar dual profession among bandmas-ters amidst the ongoing nationalismflourishing in Europe. Thus, it is not

I. Agnus DeiAgnus Dei qui tollis peccata mundi, dona nobis pacem(Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world grant us peace)

II. Beat! Beat! Drums!Beat! beat! drums! – blow! bugles! blow!Through the windows – through doors – burst like a ruthless force,Into the solemn church, and scatter the congregation,Into the school where the scholar is studying;Leave not the bridegroom quiet – no happiness must he have now with his bride,Nor the peaceful farmer any peace, ploughing his field or gathering his grain,So fierce you whirr and pound you drums – so shrill you bugles blow.

Beat! beat! drums! – blow! bugles! blow!Over the traffic of cities – over the rumble of wheels in the streets; Are beds prepared for sleepers at night in the houses? no sleepers must sleep in those beds,No bargainers bargains by day – no brokers or speculators – would they continue?Would the talkers be talking? would the singer attempt to sing?Would the lawyer rise in the court to state his case before the judge? Then rattle quicker, heavier drums – you bugles wilder blow.

Beat! beat! drums! – blow! bugles! blow!Make no parley – stop for no expostulation,Mind not the timid - mind not the weeper or prayer,Mind not the old man beseeching the young man,Let not the child's voice be heard, nor the mother's entreaties,Make even the trestles to shake the dead where they lie awaiting the hearses,So strong you thump O terrible drums – so loud you bugles blow. (Walt Whitman)

III. ReconciliationWord over all, beautiful as the sky,Beautiful that war and all its deeds of carnage must in time be utterly lost,That the hands of the sisters Death and Night incessantly softly wash again, and ever

again, this soil'd world:For my enemy is dead, a man divine as myself is dead,I look where he lies white-faced and still in the coffin—I draw near,Bend down and touch lightly with my lips the white face in the coffin. (Walt Whitman)Dona nobis pacem

IV. Dirge for Two VeteransThe last sunbeamLightly falls from the finish'd Sabbath,On the pavement here, and there beyond it is looking,Down a new-made double grave.

Lo, the moon ascending,Up from the east the silvery round moon,Beautiful over the house-tops, ghastly, phantom moon,Immense and silent moon.

I see a sad procession,And I hear the sound of coming full-key’d bugles,

Page 9: GRANT US PEACE

All the channels of the city streets they are flooding,As with voices and with tears.

I hear the great drums pounding,And the small drums steady whirringAnd every blow of the great convulsive drums,Strikes me through and through.

For the son is brought with the father,In the foremost ranks of the fierce assault they fell,Two veterans son and father dropt together,And the double grave awaits them.

And nearer blow the bugles,And the drums strike more convulsive,And the daylight o'er the pavement quite has faded,And the strong dead-march enwraps me.

In the eastern sky up-buoying,The sorrowful vast phantom moves illumin'd,'Tis some mother’s large transparent face,In heaven brighter growing.

O strong dead-march you please me! O moon immense with your silvery face you soothe me! O my soldiers twain! O my veterans passing to burial! What I have I also give you.

The moon gives you light,And the bugles and the drums give you music,And my heart, O my soldiers, my veterans,My heart gives you love. (Walt Whitman)

V. The Angel of DeathThe Angel of Death has been abroad throughout the land; you may almost hear thebeating of his wings. There is no one as of old…to sprinkle with blood the lintel andthe two side-posts of our doors, that he may spare and pass on. (John Bright)Dona nobis pacemWe looked for peace, but no good came; and for a time of health, and behold trouble! The snorting of his horses was heard from Dan; the whole land trembled at thesound of the neighing of his strong ones; for they are come, and have devoured theland…and those that dwell therein…The harvest is past, the summer is ended, and we are not saved…Is there no balm in Gilead?; is there no physician there? Why then is not the healthof the daughter of my people recovered? (Jeremiah 8:15–22)

VI. O Man Greatly BelovedO man greatly beloved, fear not, peace be unto thee, be strong, yea, be strong. (Daniel 10:19)

The glory of this latter house shall be greater than of the former…and in this placewill I give peace. (Haggai 2:9)

Nation shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. And none shall make them afraid, neither shall the sword go through their land.

Truth shall spring out of the earth, and righteousness shall look down from heaven. Open to me the gates of righteousness, I will go into them. Let all the nations be gathered together, and let the people be assembled; and let

them hear and say, it is the truth. And it shall come, that I will gather all nations and tongues.

And they shall come and see my glory. And I will set a sign among them, and theyshall declare my glory among the nations.

For as the new heavens and the new earth, which I will make, shall remain beforeme, so shall your seed and your name remain for ever.
