Star BlocksNote: Use a ¼" seam allowance for all stitching.

1. Sew a ¾" x 4½" cream strip to opposite sides of each blue or green 4½" Grand Slam small square. Press seams toward the squares. Stitch a ¾" x 5" cream strip to the top and bottom to make (4) 5" x 5" dark framed centers. Press seams toward the squares. Repeat with ¾" navy strips and the cream 4½" Grand Slam small squares to make 4 light framed centers.

2. Stitch a 3⅛" navy triangle to the 2 short sides of each 5¾" cream player triangle to make (16) 2¾" x 5" cream triangle units. Press seams toward navy triangles. Repeat with navy triangles and blue player triangles to make 16 blue triangle units. Note: The player triangles are directional. You will have 4 each top, bottom, left and right triangle units in each color.

3. Referring to the Center Star block drawing, sew a cream left triangle unit to the left edge of each dark framed center unit and a cream right triangle unit to the right edge to make (4) 5" x 9½" center rows. Press seams toward the center units.

4. Stitch the cream top triangle units between (2) 2¾" cream player squares to make (4) 2¾" x 9½" top rows, keeping the print in the squares upright to match the triangle units. Press seams toward the squares. Repeat with the cream bottom triangle units to make (4) 2¾" x 9½" bottom rows.

5. Sew each center row between a top row and a bottom row to make (4) 9½" x 9½" Center Star blocks. Press seams toward the top and bottom rows.

6. Repeat steps 3–5 with light framed center units, blue triangle units and blue 2¾" squares to make (4) 9½" x 9½" Corner Star blocks.

Background Blocks

1. Draw a diagonal line on the wrong side of each 6½" navy square and 3½" cream square.

2. Place a marked navy square right sides together on the right bottom corner of a 9½" blue player square. Sew on the marked line. Trim seam allowance ¼" out from the stitched line. Press the navy triangle open. Repeat with a marked cream square on the navy corner to complete (1) 9½" x 9½" Background A block. Repeat to make a second block.

3. Repeat to make 2 each Background B, C and D blocks paying careful attention to the placement of the pieced corners.

Framed Player Blocks

1. Sew a 1" x 8½" navy strip to the left and right edges of each 8½" Grand Slam large square. Press seams toward the strips. Stitch a 1" x 9½" navy strip to the top and bottom to make (8) 9½" x 9½" Framed Player blocks. Press seams toward the strips.

Baseball Diamond Blocks

1. Sew a 2⅜" ball print triangle to the 2 short sides of a 4¼" cream triangle to make a 2" x 3½" cream triangle unit. Press seams toward the ball print triangles. Repeat to make 40 units. Repeat with 2⅜" navy triangles and 4¼" ball print triangles to make (40) 2" x 3½" ball triangle units.

2. Stitch a ball triangle unit to the top of each cream triangle unit to make (40) 3½" x 3½" side units. Press seams toward the cream triangle units.

3. Sew a 2⅜" navy triangle to 2 adjacent edges of each 2" brown square to make 40 pieced triangles. Press seams toward the triangles.

4. Add a 3⅞" blue player triangle to the long side of 12 pieced triangles to make (12) 3½" x 3½" blue corner units. Press seams toward the blue triangles. Add a 3⅞" cream triangle to the remaining pieced triangles to make (28) 3½" x 3½" cream corner units. Press seams toward the cream triangles.

5. Sew a side unit to the left and right edges of each 3½" bat square to make (10) 3½" x 9½" center rows. Press seams toward the bat squares. Stitch a side unit between 2 cream corner units to make a 3½" x 9½" cream row. Press seams toward the corner units. Repeat to make 10 cream rows.

6. To make the Baseball Diamond A block, sew a blue corner unit to opposite sides of a side unit to make the 3½" x 9½" top row, keeping the print in the blue triangles upright in the row. Press seams toward the corner units. Sew a center row between the top row and a cream row to complete the 9½" x 9½" Baseball Diamond A block. Press seams toward the center row.

7. Repeat step 6 to make the top or bottom row and complete 2 each Baseball Diamond B–E blocks and 1 Baseball Diamond F block, referring to the diagrams for placement of the blue corner units and keeping the blue player print upright in each block.

Quilt AssemblyRefer to the exploded quilt diagram as needed throughout the following steps. Background blocks and Baseball Diamond blocks in the diagram are lettered to make placement easier.

1. Join 2 Corner Star blocks and 1 block each Background A, Baseball Diamond A and Background B to make row 1. Press seams to the right to complete the 9½" x 45½" row.

2. Join 1 block each Background A, Baseball Diamond B, Framed Player, Baseball Diamond C and Background B to make row 2. Press seams to the left.

3. Join 1 block each Center Star, Baseball Diamond B and Baseball Diamond C and 2 Framed Player blocks to make row 3. Press seams to the right.

4. Join 2 Framed Player blocks, 2 Center Star blocks and the 9½" cream player square to make row 4. Press seams to the left.

5. Continue to join 5 blocks to make each row 5–7, pressing odd-numbered rows to the right and even-numbered rows to the left.

6. Join the rows to complete the 45½" x 63½" quilt center. Press seams to 1 side.

7. Sew the 1½" x WOF navy strips short ends together to make a long strip. Press seams to 1 side. Cut into (2) 63½" strips and (2) 47½" strips. Stitch the longer strips to the long sides of the quilt center and the shorter strips to the top and bottom. Press seams toward the strips.

8. Stitch the 3½" x 65½" ball print strips to the long sides of the quilt center and the 3½" x 53½" ball print strips to the top and bottom to complete the top. Press seams toward the strips.

9. Remove the selvage edges from the backing pieces. Join the pieces on the long edges with a ½" seam allowance. Press seam open. Trim the edges to make a 61" x 79" backing piece.

10. Layer the top with the backing and a 61" x 79" batting piece. Quilt as desired. Trim edges even with the top.

11. Prepare navy scroll binding and bind edges using your favorite method to complete the quilt.
