SMU ALUMNI ABROAD GRAND REUNION TORONTO 2010 - SOUVENIR PROGRAM

In the heart of Bayombong, Nueva Vizcaya, with humble beginnings, the seed of Saint Mary’s Elementary School was sown. It germinated and grew into a college and bloomed into a university, a prestigious institution and pride and jewel of the Cagayan Valley region. In June 1928, Saint Mary’s School was inaugurated and opened its portals to its first enrollees. In 1934, the Saint Mary’s High School opened its doors to the first Saint Mary’s Elementary graduates to train them further to broader fields of education. Thus, in March 1938, the first batch of seniors marched solemnly to get their much-coveted diplomas. Those were then the first Marian High School Alumni. In 1941, the Second World War broke out, forcing the Saint Mary’s High School to close its doors, but resumed in 1946. In March 1947, the school presented its first post war graduates. Thereafter, more undergraduate courses were offered, until finally, in 1962, the Graduate School started with MA Ed major in Guidance and Counseling as the first course. Thence-forward, it offered numerous graduate and post-graduate courses in the collegiate and university levels. The parochial school became a CICM school and grew into a gigantic institution. With high academic qualifications of the faculty and staff and the laudable performance of its graduates, Saint Mary’s was elevated into a University in 1994. With the partnership of the alumni today, Saint Mary’s University is continuously growing and paving its way to-wards becoming a world class institution of learning.

On behalf of the Government of Ontario, I am delighted to extend warm greetings to everyone attending the 2010 Alumni Abroad Eighth Grand Reunion of Saint Mary’s University Alumni Association of Toronto.

This reunion is an ideal opportunity for the alumni of Saint Mary’s University in the Philippines to renew old friendships with classmates and share fond memories. As you mark this special occasion with friends and family, I encourage you to take this opportunity to reflect on the past with pride and look, with optimism, to the future.

To first-time and returning visitors to Toronto: welcome to the provincial capital. I hope that you find the time to enjoy some of the outstanding sites and attractions the city has to offer.

There is no bet-ter way to meet friends and renew friendships than an event such as this and the opportunity it offers to celebrate your achievements, reminisce and share news.

Friendship is the thread that holds the fabric of communities together. It is the foundation of emotional and psychological support and is simply irreplaceable. As you celebrate in camaraderie and togetherness, I hope you will continue this tradition for many years to come.

I am delighted that these kinds of events are taking place in Toronto. Our city is a creative, spectacular place with enormous spirit and is ranked the top business and tourist destination in Canada. Events like these are an integral part of a thriving and flourishing city and your involvement is essential for a prosperous, vital and livable Toronto. Do take time out to explore some of our interesting sites and venues - you are sure to leave with pleasant and fond memories.

beloved Alma Mater – Saint Mary’s University, allow me to extend our heartfelt felicitations to all

of you on the occasion of your grand alumni homecoming on July 30-August 2, 2010 at the Delta

Chelsea Hotel, Downtown, Toronto! Truly, there is no place like reminiscing the warmth, love and

good old memories of your stay at Saint Mary’s University (SMU) wherever you may be around the

globe through this grand event. SMU was, is and will always be your home. Remembering home

even in the cold but fantastic place like Toronto is like the act of “coming home” because of the

vibrant presence of your fellow alumni in your midst.

Your event alone, “SMU Alumni Abroad 2010 Grand Reunion”, is a fitting manifestation of how

far Marian alumni have all gone in the pursuit of their own respective careers in the fields of

education, engineering, business and accountancy, health sciences, arts, natural sciences, law,

information technology and public administration globally. Such focal and unifying premise of why

you are all gathered there in that momentous event is also viewed as a tribute to your Alma Mater.

Your Alma Mater is truly proud of your worldclass performances and achievements. I am personally

confident that you have always carried with you the very foundation of a true Marian

alumnus/alumna – the culture of 4Cs or Competence, Creativity, Community-supportiveness and

Christian discipleship in harmony with other believers.

After countless years, you have “come home” maybe not literally at Saint Mary’s University, but as

Marians wherever you may be. Thank you so much. It is a gesture that touches the heart of the

whole Marian community. You haven’t forgotten a bit about your academic and professional roots.

The staff of the Center for Alumni Relations and External Affairs has always wondered when will

you all literally come back to Saint Mary’s University?

Dear Fellow Marians:

On behalf of the SMU Alumni Abroad Grand Reunion Organizing Committee, I welcome all alumni , their families and friends who are attending this once-in-a-lifetime and memorable event being held in the beautiful city of Toronto this 30th of July to Aug. 1st, 2010.

The reunion weekend provides us with several opportunities to reminisce and recollect with former classmates and alumni friends the things where we left off and stories from years gone by since graduating from St. Mary’s. We update our personal histories so that we can catch up with the times. This is what reunion is all about.

We were opting to lace our preparation with all the “bells and whistles” to make it as pompously as we could. Unfortunately, the prevailing economic climate then has posed numerous challenges to make this plan possible. So bear with us if we have put together a “no frills” reunion so that you can still attend our alumni gathering despite the economic downturn that has affected us financially.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank each and every member of our organizing committee who has painstakingly contributed their time and be a part of this process and also thank their families for supporting them in this endeavour. Likewise, our special thanks and gratitude to our financial supporters and paid advertisers for making the publication of our souvenir program possible.

Thank you all alumni attendees and friends. We look forward to meeting you again in the not so distance future... til we meet again!

The Living Past, Today and Tomorrow - 2010 Reunion

The wings of time have flown us continually to various parts of the world after graduation from SMC/SMU. I supposed our burning eagerness to pursue our ambition pushed us to the limit to face the great challenges of life, in quest for a greener pasture, and ultimately call it a dream come true. Positively, this reunion is anchored from a unique and meaningful foresight and purpose; a jump start of future plans for SMU and its graduates. Furthermore, it could be the link in disseminating the tremendous value of education, and possibly, another chance of getting feedback of the enormous success of alumni as well. I hope that this could be the turning point to move on. This occasion is a milestone for SMU, and as we fondly look back on the past years, we are challenged to build an even brighter future. I am overwhelmed to be one of the many pages of the Alumni Book of SMU to promote the noble objective and tradition as envisioned. For the organizers of this event, I sincerely commend and congratulate them with great pleasure for taking the initiative, scoring to what amounts to a hat trick, and make it happen, despite of the continuing effects of the economic downturn. It is so nice and wonderful to be together once again!

Together Again The feeling of togetherness continually ignite the burning desire to accelerate needed learning experience that plays an important role in promoting the objec-tive and aspiration of the St. Mary’s University. Indeed the fast growing number of graduates surely generates more power and success to our Alma Matter creating a mark as one of the leading institution in Northern Luzon. As alumni this reunion gives us compelling efforts to partici-pate and rekindle with fellow graduates and old acquaintances. Sharing the joy and happiness with everyone on this wonderful event as a result of loyalty and commitment both on the entire alumni and our energetic organizers.
