In 1956, Gene Golddberg, of the Los Gatos-Saratoga Recreation Department, had an idea to have a parade. Goldberg followed up on the notion by leading a handfold of costumed kids, cats and dogs, down Santa Cruz Ave. on a Friday evening. They simply walked behind a police car, lights twirling, with Goldberg at the rear. Goldberg and Bus Benson presented the first annual parade labeled, “Santa’s Christmas Ride”, on December 6, 1957. The parade consisted of two hundred children with dozens of pets and eight floats. 1960 was the first day time parade. Frank bonacorsi became chairman in 1968 and made gradual changes over the years. Parade management passed on later to Reed Graham, Butch Lumby and Rick Miller. The Los Gatos christmas foundation was formed in 1984 to ensure funds for the parade. The LGS Recreation Department, the Los Gatos Lions Club, and the Christmas Foundation, now co-sponsor the parade. The parade has evolved into thousands of participants and over 200 entries and Gene Golberg is still involved at the start of the parade. Goldberg was Executive director of LGS Recreation for 31 years. Today Goldberg is being honored and riding in the 60th annual Los Gatos Children’s Christmas Holidays Parade.

Sharon moved to Los Gatos in 1972, has two sons, Richard and Robert, two grandsons, and has been married to Los Gatos CPA, Eric Childs, for 32 years. Through Eric’s involvement with the Los Gatos Lions since 1997, Sharon has been involved in Lions events and fund raising ever since. In the earlier days Sharon was a competitive runner and a triathlete, so it was natural for her to volunteer in 1980 with the Los Gatos Athletic Association. She helped out with LGAA events and races. Sharon started volunteering in 2001 at the Los Gatos Kiwanis Cub Fiesta de Artes. In 2011 she became the manager of the festival’s two day music performances, handling all the concert arrangements.
To be honored as Grand Marshal of the 2016 Parade could not be more fitting at this time than it is to Sharon Childs. “My most “favorite-ist” day of the year is the Los Gatos Children’s Christmas Holidays Parade. I am so excited and happy to have this honor, I love Christmas.” Every year Sharon can be spotted with her friends at their special staked out curbside location on Santa Cruz Avenue, radiating cheers of jubilation for everyone. Last year Sharon had to miss the parade and it’s another reason to celebrate the honor. Sharon is now on a recovery path from her serious illness with AML, Acute Myeloid Leukemia, a fast growing form of cancer of the blood and bone marrow. She was diagnosed in August, 2015 and had a successful bone marrow transplant on January 12, 2016. Through her numerous treatments, long periods of isolation, and difficult times, Sharon is now looking forward to returning to community involvement.
Sharon has given significant time since 2005 to the Los Gatos Community Foundation. She started out volunteering with the LGCF Beautification committee working on Town planter boxes, planting bulbs, and working on spring cleanup days. Each year she is involved with the LGCF in the annual Tree Lighting Ceremony. She was instrumental with the help of then Past Mayor Joe Pirzynski, in obtaining and placing LED lights on 54 downtown trees. In 2008, Sharon joined the LGCF board and became Executive Director. With the help of then board member Paul Dubois, she helped launch the “Buck-A-Bulb” project, to raise funds to replace the Town Christmas tree incandescent lights with energy efficient LED lights.
An evolvement of Sharon’s characteristic enthusiasm and love of Christmas by handing out trinkets on Christmas Eve to unknown people has become a tradition since 2004 at VIVA, a Los Gatos restaurant. She appears as Mrs. Clause, on Christmas Eve and hands out trinkets and small gifts to VIVA customers. This has given Sharon and the customers so much fun that Mrs. Claus is now giving over 300 gifts each year.
Sharon plans to continue her love of Christmas by having a Christmas theme on display all year long in her back yard. Sharon says, “This honor is amazing and because of community and friends, so much energy was given to me that I am convinced that is why I am here today.” Congratulations Sharon!

Through her involvement and fundraising with LGCF, the foundation has been able to award annual scholarships and grants to students and youth programs in the community. Together with the help of Paul Kent, they started the Bandstand Boogie to bring music to the community at the Oak Meadow Park Band Stand. This event just celebrated its 6th year as the very successful Los Gatos Park Dance. In 2013 through the LGCF, Sharon spearheaded a committee to restore and rehab the 10 year old Lyndon Bandstand in Oak Meadow Park. Her vision when she returns as LGCF Director is to complete the original vision of having sustainable landscaping and build a surface for events and dances.

This is the 6oth parade featuring 227 entries and over 7000 participants. the parade chairman this year and since 2013, is Lions Club member, Rick Miller. The annual parade is rich in history with only a handful of children and pets in the first parade to the transformation and evolution with thousands of participants in the present parade.
The awards ceremony is held immediately following the parade on the front lawn of Los Gatos High School. Bands are judged by the Pacific coast Judging Association and CSHA Parade judges for the Equestrian entries. Award winners will be published in the Los Gatos Weekly Times. Everyone is welcome to attend the judging ceremony.
If you would like to participate in future parades or nominate someone for the Grand marshal, go to LGSrecreation.org to down load entry forms or call 408-354-8700. Registration begins in September.
