WELCOME TO LOPE COUNTRY
Welcome to GCU!On behalf of Grand Canyon University President Brian Mueller and the entire GCU Athletics Department, we’d like to welcome you to one of the fastest-growing campuses in the country!
This guide will highlight our beautiful campus, GCU Athletics and all that the city of Phoenix and its surrounding areas have to offer.
As we enter our fourth and final year of transition to Division I, our 21 athletic teams are in a great position to be able to compete for WAC Championships and postseason play right away. We’ve already had so many fantastic accomplishments in both competition and the classroom.
The university is currently undergoing a $1 billion campus expansion that includes the construction of 10 new athletic facilities within the next two years. With all of the excitement around our continued growth, there is truly no better time to be a Lope!
We hope you enjoy this guide and your visit to Phoenix. If you need any further assistance, members of GCU Athletics are always available to help out.
Go Lopes!
Mike Vaught Vice President of Athletics

CHAMPIONS IN THE CLASSROOMWe continue to strive for athletic and academic excellence as we enter the next generation of GCU Athletics. The new GCU Student-Athlete Development Center in GCU Stadium is where student-athletes receive academic support to excel in the classroom. We believe demanding excellence of our student- athletes off the court creates champions on the court.
Fall 2015Along with developing the Student-Athlete Handbook and UNV-107: University Success for Student-Athlete course, GCU Athletics also developed and implemented programs to enhance student experiences. These include our:
• S.P.A.R.K. Summer Bridge program: Assists student-athletes in transitioning to GCU and assesses their preparedness for achievement
• Specialized Learning Services program: Provides support for academi-cally at-risk students or those with learning difficulties
• L.O.P.E.S. program: Focuses on overall student-athlete development in leadership, ownership, purpose, excellence and service
Students-athletes also attended our Welcome Back event with featured speaker Jason Pannell on “Mindset of a Champion,” and throughout the season, GCU Athletics teams support one another as part of our Athletes-for-Athletes initiative.
Spring 2016GCU Athletics was excited to welcome Aaron Trolia, former professional baseball player, who spoke on overcoming adversity and substance abuse. We also developed the following policies:
• Injury and Illness Emergency Protocol with Sports Medicine outlines procedures students should follow if they’re sick or injured
The GCU Athletics Department also participated in these exciting events:
• WAC SAAC – Life After College Conference: WAC schools sent two repre-sentatives to gain leadership and personal development skills (hosted by GCU)
• WAC SAAS One Shirt, One Body Initiative: GCU led this WAC-sponsored event with partner Big Brothers, Big Sisters to help the less fortunate in the community
Other events include Canyon Cares Easter and Canyon Cares Christmas for the community to celebrate the holidays as well as the Lopey Awards—GCU’s formal event to recognize the academic and athletic achievement of student-athletes.
Academic HighlightsGCU Athletics is proud of our 169 student-athletes for the 2015-16 academic year. Leading the WAC with a total of 97 student-athletes named to 2016 Academic All-WAC was also an achievement for Athletics.
We completed 2015-16 with the following:
• The average annual department GPA is 3.33
• 18 teams had a 3.0 or higher annual team GPA
• 74.8% of student-athletes had a 3.0 or higher GPA

A WORD FROM OUR PRESIDENTGCU is committed to excellence—striving to help students become global citizens, critical thinkers, effective communicators and responsible leaders. By making a private education affordable, we create new opportunities to elevate higher learning and contribute to the future.
At GCU, we think about the future every day. Ours is an atmosphere of constant innovation with more than 200 academic programs across nine colleges and next-generation online learning platforms. Our visionaries collaborate with industry leaders to develop programs in high-demand fields, such as STEM, business, education and health care. We also offer unique degree specializations to help students gain a competitive advantage in tomorrow’s workforce.
Academic integrity is at the heart of our values. We help our students develop practices that support academic integrity and embrace integrity as a personal, lifelong commitment.
As GCU’s programs expand, our thriving campus continues to build. We expect our campus population to grow to 25,000 students within the next five years. We have invested approximately $600 million in outstanding amenities, such as suite-style residence halls, classrooms, laboratories, GCU Arena, swimming pools, new technologies that support academic learning and more. Our successful Division I and club athletics are also a major draw for students, alumni and members of the greater Phoenix metro area.
Of all GCU’s offerings, our faith remains our cornerstone. GCU’s Christian worldview is integrated into all we do, both within the classroom and beyond. We invite students to grow spiritually through our worship services and take part in local and global outreach opportunities. We also encourage an open dialogue on faith, challenging students to adopt the principles of patience, tolerance and generosity.
In your experience with Grand Canyon University (GCU), I encourage you to ask insightful questions, explore ideas and produce original work that demonstrates your level of competence and understanding. Make a lifelong commitment to professional ethics and achieving honest, well-deserved success. Apply our principles wherever life takes you and add to the value of your GCU degree.
Wishing you the best in your academic endeavors,
Brian Mueller President Grand Canyon University
ABOUT GCU: REWARDING STUDENT EXPERIENCESWe’re excited to welcome students to our vibrant campus community to pursue their degrees and seek unique opportunities inside and outside of the classroom. To support rewarding student and learning experiences, GCU is committed to the following:
1. Start Strong, Finish Strong Student success and wellbeing are top priorities at GCU. We go above and beyond to help our students
prepare for the career of their dreams, as well as live happily and healthily during their GCU experience.
Our Student Services Advisors (SSAs) serve as support throughout the college career to ensure students continue to meet requirements and graduate on time. At the GCU Lounge, Learning Advocates (LEADs) provide academic assistance to help students with challenging coursework. Our Lopes Living Well and Lopes Support Network programs offer professional and peer support that can help students cope with struggles, from anxiety and depression to stress and homesickness. Career Services also connects students with internship and career opportunities to gain real-world experiences and build workplace-ready skill sets.
2. Early Graduation Our goal is to prepare students to successfully enter the 21st century workforce with excellent career
readiness. For many students, the earlier, the better. That’s why we offer fast-track options for students to accelerate their educational path toward graduation and enter their career sooner.
3. Low Student Debt Finances deter many students from pursuing a college degree. In response, GCU helps make a college
education accessible by offering generous scholarships and grants. On average, a student qualifies for approximately $8,200 in scholarships and grants for the academic year, which reduces tuition by about half.
4. Home Away From Home We want GCU to feel like a second home for our students. We go to great measures to provide students with
a safe and comfortable environment to live, learn and enjoy. These include on-duty public safety officers, blue light phones to call for an emergency, the RAVE system to inform students by broadcast text if there is a campus emergency and TIPS to report any issues. We also uphold Title IX to provide a community free from gender or sexual discrimination.
GCU OUTREACH AND VOLUNTEERINGGrand Canyon University (GCU) is a private, Christian university strongly committed to guiding students to become socially responsible, compassionate servant leaders who make an enduring impact on their local, national and global communities.
The university provides both financial support and hundreds of volunteer hours at nonprofit agencies in our community. These include the Phoenix Dream Center, Hope Fest AZ, American Cancer Society and Phoenix Rescue Mission. GCU has its own annual signature events such as Serve the City days, Salute Our Troops, Canyon Cares Christmas and the Run to Fight Children’s Cancer.
GCU is also committed to improving lives in our neighborhood with programs to support K-12 education, as well as a partnership with Habitat for Humanity that is the largest of its kind in the country.
GCU staff and students are encouraged to look for new volunteer opportunities to support those affected by natural disasters across the country and throughout the world.
For questions about our charitable work or the organizations we support, explore some of our work below or call 855-GCU-LOPE. Request to speak with a member of our community outreach team.
GCU LoungeThe GCU Lounge offers academic assistance to help college and secondary school students with their toughest subjects. Led by LEADs (Learning Advocates), these sessions provide free small-group or one-on-one tutoring. Follow the “LEAD”ers at the GCU Lounge.
Canyon Cares ChristmasEvery holiday season, GCU and a group of volunteer students, faculty and staff create a Christmas wonderland for hundreds of neighborhood families. In addition to lunch and craft activities, children enjoy a visit from Santa and a gift that a volunteer has donated for the child.
Disaster Relief SupportWhen a natural disaster leaves people in need, GCU students and staff are quick to respond. GCU staff sprang into action to raise nearly $60,000 when devastating earthquakes hit Haiti and Japan. After the 2011 Joplin, Missouri tornado struck, the GCU community collected much-needed gift cards, toiletries and clothing. GCU staff then drove the donations directly to victims.
Phoenix Dream CenterGCU proudly supports the Phoenix Dream Center and its mission to serve homeless, low-income and at-risk youth. The center also provides resources, opportunities and services to help struggling individuals and families realize the dream of living a self-sufficient life.
The Phoenix Dream Center needs volunteers to help with their young women’s program “Hope Wing.” Opportunities include working directly with other volunteers as a supervisor (requires a six-month commitment) or as a client advocate for a program participant. Learn more about volunteering by contacting the Dream Center directly.
Habitat for HumanityGCU has partnered with Habitat for Humanity, a nonprofit Christian housing ministry that builds and repairs houses all over the world for underprivileged people. Habitat for Humanity volunteers are renovating an entire community of homes in our West Phoenix neighborhood.
GCU is committing the talent and enthusiasm of students and employees who pair with Habitat leaders to supply the manpower necessary to renovate as many as 700 neighborhood homes. Repairs may include landscaping, roof replacement, painting and structural repairs.
