THE ISLAND #THE ISLAND#

Most new arrivals to Gran Canaria arelured to the gilt-edged south where sandybays, fishing harbours and bite-sized covesprovide the coconut oil crowd with aplethora of horizontal opportunities. Here, the rolling dunes of Maspalomas are theonly natural icon amongst the buzzingman-made resorts of Playa del Ingles, andPlaya de Maspalomas. Further along thecoast Puerto Rico and Puerto de Mogánalso draw the bucket and spade brigade, the latter providing a scenic mooring spotfor the yacht-erati.

Inland, dotted between flower-speckledmeadows and narrow country roads, you’llfind villages like Fataga, Tamaraceite, andTeror. Here time drifts calmly by, save forthe periodic village fiesta. Unlike thecapital, Las Palmas. It’s not only the mostpopulated metropolis of the archipelagobut also the most cosmopolitan. Thehistorical quarter displays a rich legacysparkling with tales of daring incursionsthat have shaped the Gran Canaria oftoday.

For more flexibility, don’t think twice abouthiring a car. The roads are generally verygood and well signed making driving apleasure. Having said that, Las Palmas canbe confusing for the uninitiated. It’s oftenless stressful to stop at the first car parkyou come across and then either walk orhail a taxi.

For the more active, bicycles can be hiredat a daily rate (from around € 10 for oneday).

Electricity220 volts power supply using roundtwo-pin plugs.

Tourist TrapsBe careful when buying cameras andelectrical goods from shops in the touristresorts. If the price seems too good to betrue, it probably is. There are many fakesin circulation. Always ask to see aninternational guarantee before you passover any money.

Also, don’t fall for the timeshare touts whoapproach with a scratch card. The prizethey ‘can’t believe you’ve won’ can only becollected if you agree to a timeshare salestour. They say it only takes 90 minutes -count on nearly double that.
