Regular means that something is

normal, that it ‘follows the rules’. All the past tense verbs that use an

________ at the end are called regular verbs.

UNIT 2 – SIMPLE PAST TENSE - REGULAR vs. IRREGULAR VERBS (SPELLING)

The REGULAR The IRREGULAR

the Nice the Naughty

A. You already know lots of past tense regular verbs that end with –ED. 3 of them are done for you. (See how they are different & discuss)

Try to write at least 3 more for each different kind.

Irregular means that something is not regular. It is not normal or ordinary and it doesn’t ‘follow the rules’. These verbs do

NOT end with ed. These are the NAUGHTY verbs. There are about 100 of them, but we use them so often that

they are easy to remember!

danced studied stopped

dance + ed= danced study +ed= studied stop + ed= stopped

When a verb ends with y, take out the y, put in an i, add the ed. Let’s try…

UNIT 2 – SIMPLE PAST TENSE - REGULAR VERBS – (SPELLING)

B. Look carefully at the two pictures below and at the spelling of the verbs in the sentences. Do you see a difference in the two endings?

We hopped to our friend’s house for lunch. We hoped to meet some new friends there. If a verb has one vowel before a one-consonant ending, we double that consonant before we add

the ed. (If we don’t do this, we can get confused about what the verb is!) Here are some common verbs that have a doubled final consonant before the ed. A lot of these words end in p!

C. Why do you think some are spelled with IED ?

I might not care for it properly. However, after long discussions, I think I convinced them!

It was not easy but finally I got my cat! Yeay!

UNIT 4 – SIMPLE PAST TENSE - QUESTIONS & ANSWERS

E. Read the text below and underline the PAST verbs. This is a biography of Sir Isaac Newton. He is one of the most important scientists of history. Let’s read more about him. “What we know is a drop.

What we don’t know is an ocean.” Sir Isaac Newton

Sir Isaac Newton was born on January 4, 1643, to a poor farming family. His father died 3

months before he was born. His mother remarried when Isaac was three years old and left young

Isaac in the care of his grandparents. The young Isaac attended school at King’s School where he was

one of the top students. Later on, he passed his final exams with very good results, and was able to

go to Trinity College, Cambridge.

At Cambridge, he was able to follow his interests in mathematics, science and physics. He was

a remarkable student in mathematics and he could focus on them until he had solved the mystery

behind them. Cambridge closed for two years because of a serious illness called the plague. When it

reopened, Newton returned. He later became a professor there.

Sir Isaac Newton, was called to as one of the greatest people of history. The most popular

story about Sir Isaac Newton is how he understood the ‘theory of gravity’, after being hit on the head
