William and his brother found all the available land taken,so they moved south into Virginia and settled on the Calf Pasture River.He resided in 1742 at Calf Pasture River, Augusta Co., Va.

Notes for JAMES GRAHAM , SR.:In the spring of 1777 Indians made an assault on the Graham homestead.James blocked the door with a heavy bench and a tub of water. A mannamed McDonald (or Caldwell) was shot and killed. Unable to gainentrance to the house, the Indians turned their assault upon the detachedkitchen. In this outbuilding slept a young Negro man and two of theGraham children. The Negro, whose name was Sharp, tried to escape byclimbing up the chimney, but was found, tomahawked and scalped. TheIndians shot up through the ceiling wounding the boy, John Graham, inthe knee, then dragged him and his sister down and out into the yard.Finding that John was wounded too badly to be taken prisoner, they atonce dispatched him with the tomahawk and carried off his scalp. Col. Graham was shooting into the yard from the upstairs porthole.He had killed one or more of the Indians. When daylight came, it wasfound that three were dead and 7 yr old Elizabeth was missing. A few years after this occurrence, an Indian skeleton was found abouttwo miles from the scene. Graham secured the jaw bone of this skeletonand used it for a gunrack for a number of years. Graham began searching for his daughter and located her among theShawnee tribes in what is now Chillicothe, Ohio after many months. Shehad been adopted by a squaw of one of the chiefs of the Cornstalk familyof that tribe. In 1785 Colonel Graham finally succeeded in ransoming and bringinghis daughter back home. By now, she had spent half her life with theIndians and it is said that she had an Indian lover. The price paid for herrelease was the release of an Indian prisoner, thirty saddles and a lot ofbeads and other trinkets, and about $300.00 in silver. The exchange tookplace at Limestone Creek, where is now Maysville, KY. Grahamreversed the shoes on the horses to prevent recapture. The homecoming was a difficult one. The white customs were strangeto Elizabeth. She attempted to run away and return to the Indians, and"ever and anon would clamor for the wild life of the wigwam". Notes for JOHN GRAHAM:Descended from Donegal Ireland. Fought in the Revolution. He wasorphaned at the age of three. When he was 10 years old, he enlisted inthe 8th Virginia Regt, Continental Line, Capt. George Vallandingham;sCo., on 5 Oct. 1775.He began in the early 1780's wandering over the mountains into westernlands and becoming familiar with lands of Virginia and Kentucky. In1797 he laid out Preston's Station (now Prestonsburg) for Col. JohnPreston. As early as June 27, 1797 Graham had completed thesurveyeing of a 2000 acre tract, presently Emma, Calf Creek and CowCreek, Floyd Co., Ky. It soon became his own. In 1805 he moved hisfamily to Emma and completed his home in 1807. He established ageneral store at his home. In 1815 he initiated a bank and began to loanmoney to settlers. He established a mill in Big Sandy, called Graham'sMill near present Dwale Ky. He sold the tract of land for the streets andthe alleys and the Old Courthouse Square for $1.00 to the County of Floydto form Prestonsburg on June 26, 1815. At the time of his death he ownedthirteen slaves.

From an article printed in The Register of the Kentucky State HistoricalSociety, reprinted from; Jillson, Willard Rouse, THE BIG SANDYVALLEY, 1923: ...Feeling the approach of death in the Spring of 1835, Judge Grahamwrote the following will which was probated during the succeeding Juneterm of the Floyd County Court. Although ordered to be recorded, thisappears never to have been done. The copy printed below is reproducedfrom one made by G.H. Davidson, Deputy Clerk of Floyd County forJudge Graham's grandson, James Polk Harris, April 7, 1881. It wassecured by the writer from W.C. Gobel, Deputy Clerk of the FloydCircuit Court on November 8, 1923.

"Will of Judge Graham" "In the name of God Amen. "I, John Graham of the County of Floyd and State of Kentucky do make,ordain and publish this as my last will and testament in the manner asfollow to wit" "I will that after my decease my body be decently buried.

"Item First: I will that all my just debts be first paid by my executorshereinafter named. "Item Second: I will and bequeath to my beloved wife, RebeccaGraham all that part of the tract of land whereon I now live, Beginning atSandy River and running straight with the upper cross fence of themeadow to the back line of the survey, thence with said back line toDavid Morgan's line, thence to Sandy River, and thence down the river tothe beginning: also one Negro boy named Henry, one Negro girl namedDelpha, also one Negro woman named Rachel and one Negro boy namedNelson: also all the geese, fifteen head of sheep, four cows and calves,one brown mare, one black horse Snap and twenty head of hogs, also allthe dead victuals, corn oats and hay on the farm at the time of mydecease, all of which land, Negroes and other property my said wifeRebecca Graham is to dispose of at her death as she sees proper in full ofher part of my estate. "Item third: I will and bequeath unto my daughter Rebecca Mayo atract of land lying on Sandy river called the Cains place which I haveheretofore conveyed to her husband Jacob Mayo, also one Negro girlnamed Jemima, two cows and calves, two beds and furniture which Ihave heretofore given to the said Rebecca Mayo as a part of her estate. "Item Fourth: I will and bequeath unto my daughter Dorothy Trimble atract of land and whereon her husband Edwin Trimble now lives which Ihave heretofore deeded to the said Trimble, also one Negro girl Nancy,also two cows and calves, two beds and furniture which I have heretoforegiven the said Dorothy Trimble as a part of her estate. "Item Fifth: I will and bequeath unto my daughter Eleanor Morgan thetract of land whereon her hunband David Morgan now lives which I haveheretofore conveyed to the said David Morgan two cows and calves, twobeds and furniture which I have heretofore given the said EleanorMorgan as a part of her estate. "Item Sixth: I will and bequeath unto my daughter Sophia Layne, oneNegro girl named Sally, two cows and calves, two beds and furniturewhich I have heretofore given her as a part of her estate,, and I haveexecuted to her husband William H. Layne, a title bond for the tract ofland whereon he now lives upon,, he and James S. Layne paying me onethousand dollars for which they are bound to my estate which Iconsidered equal to the portions given to my other children over andabove the said one thousand dolars as a part of the estate of the saidSophia Layne. "Item Seventh: I will and bequeath unto my daughter Tabitha Grahamall the land which I won on the waters of Cow and Calf Creeks and theBroad hollow supposed to contain Seven Hundred and fifty acres, twocows and calves, two beds and furniture and one Negro girl namedHester Ann as a part of the said Tabitha Graham's estate.

Notes for DAVID MORGAN , SR.:In 1814, after his father and grandfather were murdered, PatrickCummings and William J. Mayo were appointed his guardians. (FloydCo Order Book 1, Dec. 1813). He acquired the estate of his deceasedfather on 22 Nov. 1824. He bacame fond of racing horses, drinkingwhiskey, and fighting. Family tradition holds that while he was away atthe races a daughter was born He felt so badly about missing birth thathe swore off drink and he freed his slaves. He was listed in the 2 Aug1850 Census at Floyd Co., KY, occupation farmer, no slaves. He movedin 1852 to Edgar Co., IL, where other members of the Morgan family hadmoved in the 1820's. His eldest son, Thomas Graham Morgan, remained

Notes for JOHN W. DUNLAP:John W., Lora, and their mother still lived on their father'sfarm in 1899, it being part of the same farm owned by theirgreat grandfather, John Graham, Sr. purchased in 1746. FromDavid Graham, written 1899: "IT was the privilege of the writer to visit this old"homestead" for the first time in May, 1898, and viewed thelandscape o'er, where was reared his grandmother, his greatuncles, and aunts more than one and a half centuries abo. Theoriginal form of six hundred and ninety six acres lies on bothsides of the Calf Pasture River; is mostly bottom land, and it islocated about four miles below Deerfied and 25 milesnorthwest of Staunton, at Marble Valley, P.O., extending adistance of two miles along the river; portions of it is nowowned by a Wm. Clayton in removing the old stone foundationduring the summer of 1898, and after the writer's visit, found

on one of the corner stones imbedded in the old wall the date"1755" cut in the stone. At the time of the writer's visit the wallwas intact and well preserved, though the mill itself had longsince been torn down. The water power of this mill wasfurnished by two large fountain springs which had their sourcenear each other, on an elevation overlooking the mill. There islittle doubt but that this was the first mill built in that section ofthe country. There now stands a good flouring mill a shortdistance below the old foundation wass that is run the yearround by the two springs as nemed, and does a good payingbusiness."
