'Printing' plays a greater role in branding of sports events and decoration of sports goods The heat is on in Brazil! As many as 32 teams are striking with determination to seize that Golden FIFA Football World Cup'14. Many of the printers may not be aware

that the very striking and colorful football 'Brazuca', created by adidas and produced by sport

goods manufacturing companies in China and Pakistan, has the impression of screen printing!

Sports events of mass following such as world cup football, IPL cricket or Olympics, bestow huge opportunities for

printers. We have customers in Punjab and NCR region who produce decals for sports goods such as footballs, cricket bats, hockey sticks, et al. The bats, gloves, shoes, helmets, cheer sticks, t-shirts, etc, that you have seen in the IPL cricket series, had the impression of screen printing (in some cases digital as well).

While watching the ongoing world cup football matches, make sure you also look at the audience and identify/list out all those printed products. The football fans are waving PVC cheer sticks, balloons, flags, and many other promotional items, et al which are screen printed. The garments/t-shirts/ socks/caps, wore by players and audience, have the impression of screen printing (Direct to garment or heat transfer). In some cases they are printed on digital (DTG or sublimation).

So, as printers/screen printers you have every reason to watch sports with a big smile. Because even before start of a sports event such as FIFA world cup or IPL, 'printing' plays a greater role in branding of sports events and decoration/product identification of wide range of sports goods. Screen printing is backbone of school stationery manufacturing: Meanwhile, a hectic academic

season is going on. Parents/school kids are busy in buying their stationery such as note books, geometry sets (including Plastic scale), school bags, shoes, umbrellas, raincoats, et al. I would like to draw the attention of our

readers that these items have the impression of screen printing process.

Even these days there are note books with value addition/UV special effects, done through screen

printing. For e.g., Delhi based Shree Venkatesh Industries (India), a whole sale paper trader and manufacturer of stationery,

undertake value addition on note books using our Nano Premier League (NPL) plus. Similarly, Nova Publications, the giant printing unit of Jalandhar based

Evergreen Publications Group, has been successfully exploiting Grafica's Cylinder Press with inline UV to extensively offer value addition on teaching aids and wide range of children's books to make it visually appealing and to stimulate Kids' mind. Then there are bag manufacturers in Rajkot in Gujarat state, who use our Nano-Print/Nano-Print plus screen printing machines to print school bags. These are screen printed on duly cut PVC, resin, canvas, sheets after which it is stitched. Screen printing's connection

with Monsoon:Since it is monsoon season, let me also share with you that the rain-coat or the umbrella you are holding have the impression of screen printing. For e.g. Mysore-based SunTex uses Grafica's screen printing machine to print umbrellas which they produce for their parent company Sait Nagjee Purushotham & Co. Pvt Ltd, the owners of SUN brand umbrellas.

They roll out over 120,000 umbrellas per month.

Let Charity begin at Printers' Heart! As the academic season'2014 has begun, it's also time for us to render some charity. Because scores of parents may find it difficult to send their kids to school as they are left with little funds in their coffer; they have to meet both ends … house expenses and kids' education and health. Charity begins at home! So, on our part, through the Yashomati Dhirubhai Mistry Foundation, every year we offer educational assistance to children of Grafica's employees. Since we conduct free workshops at our DMI institute, I always appeal to participants to make contributions towards education of at least one kid of their employees or in the community. You would agree with me that lack of education is the root cause of all our problems in the society. From our editor, I heard that some of the printers are already doing yeoman service to society in their own way. We will try to highlight these aspects in our future issues.

It's awards time:I congratulate all winners in FESPA-Munich Awards'14 competition. Some of them have shared their views about why it is important to participate in such competitions (pg 7). As you would read in this issue, there are many awards competitions lined up in the coming months (pg 5). Hurry up and rush your entries to these awards competitions.

Dear Bhargav Sir

After my recent visit to FESPA-Digital in Munich, Germany, I would say screen printing still rocks. When I was there I was feeling proud of Grafica's advance screen printing technology that I am using and the techniques I learnt in DMI workshop. At the FESPA show, I felt that the Digital technology could be an ocean of opportunities for some printers but not for everyone. I wanted to check whether digital can coexist with our screen printing business (ceramic and glass decal). Upon introspection, I felt the need to improvise my existing screen printing capabilities and sharpen the skills in decal printing before digital technology eats up my business.

We keep working in the same way as you taught us in DMI workshop. With your guidance, we look forward to grow further in our business and will strive become one of the best companies in ceramic decal printing.

Bhargav Mistry to speak at IndusPRINT South Asia on Oct 11, 2014 in Bengaluru

During the recently concluded Gujarat-leg of SPI - Vikas Yatra, scores of printers in Rajkot, Ahmedabad, Baroda and Surat expressed their eagerness to visit Screen Print India Exhibition'14 to be held on 18-21 September 2014 in Goa. They liked the 'sure leisure/pure business' concept of SPI'14 exhibition in Goa.

As the Lead Sponsor and Knowledge Partner of the SPI Expo'14, Grafica had participated in Vikas Yatra in Rajkot, Ahmedabad, Baroda, Surat, on 28, 29, 30 and 31 May 2014, respectively.

Ahmedabad based Shree Printwell Offset Pvt Ltd has recently installed Grafica's CamShell, a heavy duty screen printing machine and screen making kit to offer high end value addition in a big way. With this investment, the company now moves on a growth trajectory.

“We invested in Grafica's 30” x 40” CamShell to make our printing unit self reliant in value addition since customers prefer under one roof printing service,” asserts Pravin Patel, MD, Shree Printwell Offset.

He adds: “Through their inhouse publication, Grafica News India, Grafica is really making great contribution for the development and growth of screen printing in India.”

Interview:

From where did you get 'value addition' inspiration?The thought process to invest in advanced screen printing started after getting inspiration from Grafica during our visit to their stall in one of the exhibitions. We saw some striking value addition samples which demonstrated creative use of various UV special effects over offset printed commercial and packaging jobs. Then and there only we realised the importance of value addition in context of commercial printing. I would say Grafica team injected a new thinking in us about the complementary role of screen printing in offset printing.

It is a well known fact in commercial printing that spot UV (matt and gloss) are very normal and old print finishing technique. Today, 75% of our jobs (commercial and packaging) involve value addition. When we suggest our customers about use of various UV special effects they like and accept the idea, after all they want their jobs to be outstanding. We offer glitter, abrasive, crystal, reflective and other ornamental UV special effects to embellish commercial and packaging jobs.

In what way screen printing benefits offset printers like you?We consider screen printing both as an asset as well as our USP. We are maintaining a growth of 30-

40% per annum in our printing business; we believe that sustained growth is possible only with value addition. In the normal offset printing arena, there are too many players with cut throat competition.

There is a great benefit to us and to our customers, if we have everything inhouse; it gives us total freedom to offer value addition right from design to dispatch. We can now undertake complicated jobs requiring application of various UV special effects over offset printed commercial and packaging jobs.

About Shree Printwell Offset Shree Printwell Offset Pvt. Ltd was founded by Pravin Patel, founder-director. Their current 20000 sq.ft print facility in Ahmedabad employs about 160 persons. They offer commercial and packaging printing services to corporate

customers in India and abroad. Their customers include: Telecom companies, educational and research

organizations, industry bodies, PSUs, corporate houses, MNCs, healthcare, ceramics, pharma, retail chains, cosmetic, food, and pesticides companies.

And the advent of UV special effects has caught the imagination of creative minded offset and screen printers across Gujarat. Now that several printers (both offset and screen printers) have invested in

Grafica screen printing machines exclusively to offer value addition, vis a vis, high end UV special effects, what is also called as print decoration or print embellishment.

Since the inception of its DMI institute, Grafica has been aggressively promoting value addition concept through regular workshops, educational tour (road shows), presentations at industry forums, live demo at national, regional exhibitions. Pratik Screen has invested in Grafica's Nano-Print to offer specialty screen printing service. The job was printed on 28 x 40 inch sheet, and then treated with multiple print finishing with perfect registration. “We were able to produce such a precision job because of Grafica’s Cam Shell, heavy duty screen printing machine. The Awards were announced at the Celebration Dinner held in Munich, Germany on 22 May 2014. Entries were received from 24 countries. All shortlisted entries were also on display at FESPA Digital 2014 and will continue on a global tour to FESPA Africa (2-4 July 2014), Mexico (21-23 August 2014), China (19-21 November 2014), Eurasia (4-7 December 2014) and Brazil (18-21 March 2015), reaching a global audience.

“We are proud that our made in India product has been appreciated on international platform. Since it was our first ever

international achievement, we personally went to FESPA Award ceremony to receive the prestigious award,” says Kashyap Thaker, Director of Perfect Packaging. “We came to know about FESPA

award competition in Grafica News India. Out of 5 entries submitted, 3 were shortlisted”.

“It is a morale booster to our entire team. Getting international awards would mean an international endorsement, because the entry was being judged on merit of quality and creativity by international screen printing experts who are supposed to be neutral while judging,” he adds.

Ahmedabad based Marvel Graphic Studio has won 'Fine Art Print of the Year' award (Gold and Silver) in the recently concluded FESPA'14 competitions. On the top of this international achievement,

Dhanvi Shah, Chairman of the company has been recently conferred with 'Business & Service Excellence Award'2014 for their 'Outstanding contribution to the field of Indian Contemporary Art'. The award, instituted by Brand Academy, was presented to Dhanvi Shah by former World Chess Champion, Grandmaster Viswanathan Anand, at the award ceremony held in Mumbai on May 31, 2014.

Stencil underexposure is one of the most common problems in the screen printing process. Incorrect or inconsistent exposure can create costly problems in production including stencil breakdown on press, excessive pinholes, saw-toothing, loss of detail, inaccurate image reproduction and reclaiming difficulty.

While there are quite a few exposure variables to consider and control, the greatest tool to ensure proper exposure is an exposure calculator. An exposure calculator test simulates between 5 to 10 different exposures with incremental neutral density filters, all on the same piece of film

amount of UV light that hits the stencil in progressive degrees, so a single test can give us all the information we need to determine the correct exposure for a given set of conditions. For instance, a calculator may have six exposures at 100%, 75%, 60%, 50%, 33% and 25% of the original exposure

exposures are then judged based on color change, depending on the chemistry of emulsion used. Most stencil manufacturers offer exposure calculators, but some are more versatile than others, so do your research before purchasing one.

Successful screen making requires the use of this tool on a regular basis. Each and every stencil/mesh combination must be tested. Exposure times vary with stencil thickness (i.e. coating technique), stencil brand/type, mesh count/thread diameter, exposure lamp and distance. Do not assume that a 2:2 coating on a 230/48 mesh will have the same exposure as the emulsion coated 2:2 on a 380/31. Each combination will have a different result. Each stencil product will respond differently. Even after establishing a correct exposure time, regular tests should be made to double check accuracy and confirm exposure lamp operation.

How to use a Neutral Density Exposure Calculator1. Coat and dry a test screen.

Create a chart to record mesh specifications (count, diameter, color and type), screen tension, emulsion type, coating technique, stencil thickness, type and power of lamp, and distance of lamp.

2. Tape the exposure calculator onto the substrate side of the screen with the film's emulsion toward the stencil. If you are using vellum or other type of

film in your shop that has a higher Dmin, put a blank piece of the film over the exposure calculator(not in between to avoid light scatter.) This will simulate the effect Dmin will have on stencil exposure.

3. Estimate a reasonable exposure time by either consulting the emulsion specification sheet, calling the emulsion manufacturer or calculating the average exposure time currently used in production.

4. Expose the screen AT DOUBLE the estimated correct exposure time. Example: Estimated Exposure Time = 60 seconds/units Test exposure time = 60 x 2 = 120 seconds/units

5. Wash out the image area using normal production technique.

6. Evaluate the stencil using the following guidelines:

! For Diazo or Dual-Cure emulsions, dry the screen to evaluate color change. Place the screen on a light table and evaluate the steps for a yellowish color The step showing no change in

coloring to the next longer exposed section is fully exposed. For maximum 'water resistance' when printing water based inks, evaluate color change on a Dual-Cure emulsion when wet. The color change point will shift once the screen is dry.

! For SBQ or 'Pure' Polymer emulsions, evaluate the squeegee side of the screen directly following washout while screen is wet. Look for the step that shows no change in density to the next longer exposed section. The emulsion will appear a more milky white or lighter density in the areas where full exposure is not present (more emulsion washed away in those areas)

density differences if water resistance is not needed, but often the density differences are easier to see when wet. Again, the color change point will change after the screen is dry.

! For all types of emulsions, evaluate the detail area on the stencil using a magnifier loupe, keeping in mind the printable image resolution of the mesh (finest detail width equals at least two mesh openings plus one thread). Look at image details similar to image requirements commonly printed in your shop, and examine resolution, mesh bridging and edge definition. Optimal exposure based on resolution is typically a bit shorter exposure than the step selected based on color change. Some stencil resistance is compromised to gain resolution. If more resistance is needed use the step chosen when the screen is wet. Select an exposure based on both sufficient stencil hardness and stencil copy detail needed.

7. Multiply the selected step's factor (decimal indicated on the film) by the test exposure time for correct exposure. Test exposure time x selected factor = optimum exposure time. Example: 120 x 0.6 = 72 seconds/units

If the selected step is at the lowest or highest factor section of the calculator, the test exposure time was too short or too long. Make a new test adjusting the test exposure time according to the results seen in the first test.

8. Record all the information on the exposure chart.

As an entrepreneur with experience and expertise in plastisol inks manufacturing, he technically better knows that in manual screen printing the ink consumption is prohibitively high.

Meet N P Sivaprasad, Managing Director of DG Garments, part of a Deivanai Group, Tirupur. Sivaprasad tells that with automation in DTG screen printing, ink can be saved to a great extent. That's exactly why his company has invested in Grafica's nano-prinTex (12 colour/14 pallets), along with two nano-flashTex.

Interview:Tell us your experience with automation:The automatic machine enables us to use low elongation and fine mesh, thus ink deposition vis a vis ink consumption is minimised. On the other hand, manual screen printing necessitates use of high elongation mesh/non-fine mesh which leads to excess ink deposition / ink consumption. Also, it is virtually impossible to

get the kind of machine quality on manual table as workmen have the limitation with regard to applying equal squeegee stroke/ pressure. Moreover, it is our experience that photorealistic and discharge printing is possible only with automatic machine.

Your views about Grafica:In our earlier partnership business, we used to produce high quality heat transfers on Grafica's semi automatic screen printing machines. We have had excellent experience with Grafica -- both on quality and service front. And that experience was still afresh in my

mind when I saw their nano-prinTex at an international exhibition in Mumbai. nano-prinTex was running noiselessly without a compressor. Moreover, Grafica being an Indian company, we also felt somewhat confident about their service and parts availability.

What's the market trend?a) Print preference: Customers

now prefer mostly phthalate free, eco friendly inks to be used in printing. About 70% of our jobs involves photorealistic and discharge printing. Consumers' preference has now shifted towards prints that give soft-hand feel effect / fabric like natural feeling. They do not want that rough feeling

effect of plastisol inks.b) Quality finish: The new

generation consumers evaluate a piece of garment / t-shirt based on perfection in finishing, style, design, and creativity. They look at it in detail, touch and feel it, comment, and choose. In future, for sure only a quality garment will sell.

c) Brand preference: Today, wearing a branded garment has become status symbol. The demand for branded garments is growing. I feel in future only branded garment will rule the market and unbranded garments will lose their share although they will not be wiped out.

So, the onus is on garment manufacturers / DTG printers to design and print impressive and quality products for the ultimate satisfaction of new generation consumers.

About DG Garments:DG Garment is a part of Deivanai Group, a private family owned enterprise, which exports knitted garments to USA and Europe. They have an office in USA. The Group companies have vertically integrated manufacturing facilities from Ring Spinning - Knitting - Dyeing and Finishing - Printing - Embroidery - Cutting and Sewing. They have three production facilities: Printing unit (9000 sq.ft), Collar knitting unit (2500 sq.ft), and Garmenting unit (15000 sq.ft).

DG Garments' business is divided into garmenting and direct to garment printing. They manufacture men's t-shirts for leading brands such as Arrow, Spykar, among others. About 75% of their DTG screen printing capacity is used for jobwork, and rest is for inhouse requirement.

Mumbai based Pramukh Embroidery has computerized embroidery set up and DTG screen printing unit. They cater to both domestic and export market.

printing sector. Such newsletter is very much needed to keep myself updated. Out of 10 samples submitted 9 were got shortlisted. The word 'vikrant' in Hindi language means 'bold, brave or powerful'. As the name suggests, Vikrant Ghotge, CEO of Pune-based AA's Ad Aids, is born tough to ride bike and play soccer. At the same time he is groomed by his late father to be a quality industrial screen printer with specialization in automobile decals.

Vikrant Ghotge is a multi faceted personality. His company manufactures automobile decals and wide range of industrial labels. 'Discipline, learning, practice' - are some of core values that he follows to achieve success in business, sports (soccer) and adventures (bike riding).

Succor to Soccer: Vikrant Ghotge is a member of the 'Thunder Boltz Soccer Club' in Pune which has over 70 active football-playing members. The team does not participate in league matches, but holds regular internal competitions by making 7-8 groups to keep the competitive spirit of its members ever-charged. He was also a member of college soccer team which participated in inter-college as well as state level competitions. Despite huge task at

work he spends time to practice and play football 4 times a week (3 times morning and evening of Sundays).

Fitness & discipline: He indulges in warm up with discipline before kick starting the regular practice matches under the guidance of a coach. “Discipline is required in all aspects of our life – home, work (screen printing) or sports,” says Vikrant who will turn 40 years of age this year.

Automobile decal producer's passion for bike riding: “We go on week end bike rides along with a group 9 bike riding enthusiasts. I also engage in all India bike tour,” says Vikrant Ghotge who was one

of the members of Pune's Group of Harley-Davidson owners who participated in a mega ride “to celebrate the shared spirit of freedom, adventure and their passion for motorcycling” as part of the 2nd National H.O.G. Rally and India Bike Week in Goa.

Vikrant Ghotge who had the maximum riding experience, was quoted of saying in an online media: “It's not just a bike riding, it's all about networking. I have made a lot of new friends which I would not be able to make if I hadn't indulged in this kind of Caravan. Having driven all across the country in the last few months, we have had the best experiences.”

He adds, “Speed is not my criteria while riding the bike, I prefer safety first. We should never risk

with leisure? “While engaging in business, we also need to spend quality time with our family and friends, spend time for personal development and leisure otherwise what is the use of creating wealth. I get full support from family despite the fact that I am involved in sports, adventure and business. That's because I give quality time for them too,” says Vikrant father of 2 growing kids.

I feel success stops if we stop learning. Learning is a continuous process. I believe in 'practice makes man perfect', it applies to both sports and screen printing business, and even adventure – bike riding. We play football under the guidance of an experienced coach.

mostly accompanied with sweet boxes. Almost 90% of the people prefer cards with boxes only. This is an emerging trend which is being followed in other parts of the country too. Most of the people are now spending lavishly for their invitations. Marriage is the most important and auspicious occasion in one's life. Now-a-days wedding card is considered to be a status symbol. We have often seen people getting emotional about their card. They expect their card to reflect the grandeur of the wedding ceremonies. So, it is our responsibility that the invite lives upto their expectations and is special for each of them. Tell us about cost factor: Premium segment customers do not mind paying a justifiable higher price for creative and quality work. Yes, for some people cost is also a main factor, even if they want to have an innovative card. So, fitting within the budget is also a challenge. We have overcome this by launching our budget range of cards. Ultimately, customer satisfaction is our primary motto and money is secondary. What're the other challenges? India being a country of diversity, people's liking and requirement too differs. That leads to a big challenge. We have to keep on adding new designs and concepts to our collection. We have to play with colours, UV special effects, and different finishing technique while creating new ideas.

Your experience with Grafica so far: Although their machines are little costlier as compared to the other Indian machines, I do not mind spending extra as it is value for money. They offer excellent after sale service and technical support. I have a great experience with Grafica, hence I recommend their machines to my friends from the industry whenever they seek my opinion in the matter. The adidas 'Brazuca' the official match ball of the 2014 FIFA World Cup tournament which is currently underway in Brazil, has the impression of screen printing. As football fans must have noticed, the ball has a multi-colour design created to represent Brazil.

The Brazuca ball was created by the adidas, a FIFA Partner and FIFA World Cup Official Match Ball supplier. The ball was manufactured by Pakistan based Forward Sports, and earlier by China-based Long Way Enterprise. According to an official statement of FIFA (The Fédération

According to adidas official note, the design of iconic Brazuca ball is all about World Cup and all about Brazil, with following three key visual elements:

Amazon river in Brazil and the very rhythmic and fluid shapes one often can find in Brazilian nature as well as architecture.
