  • Today is a time for celebration, as you mark

both the end and the beginning of exciting

parts of your lives. It is also an occasion on

which to look forward to the opportunities

available to you as a graduate of the

University of South Australia. I am honoured

to be able to share this special event with

you, and your family and friends.

During your time at the University of

South Australia you have developed a set

of distinctive qualities which describe the

knowledge, skills and personal abilities that

you will need as you move into a constantly

changing global economy. You have acquired

an international outlook; a capacity for critical

thought and lifelong learning; an ability to

    communicate effectively, and work

autonomously and cooperatively; and a sense

of social responsibility. You are well equipped

to succeed, confident in the knowledge and

    skills you possess.

Congratulations and all the very best as you

start the next big adventure in your lives.

    Dr Ian Gould AM

    Chancellor

It is with excitement and pride that I share

this most significant occasion with you.

Graduating from university represents a major

personal achievement. It requires great effort,

    discipline, focus and personal motivation,

particularly for those people studying remotely

or combining their studies with work and

family commitments, as so many of our

    students do.

I offer you my heartfelt congratulations on

your success. It is also important to

    acknowledge those who have provided

    support and encouragement throughout your

    academic journey, particularly your family,

friends and mentors. On behalf of the

University of South Australia, I wish you every

success and much prosperity for the years

ahead. While today marks the realisation of

a goal, I look forward to you maintaining a

relationship with the University into the

future, perhaps through further study or by

becoming involved with our alumni network.

I hope that the University of South Australia

has served you well, and provided you with

the skills, confidence and experience to help

you achieve your dreams, as well as the

    strong self-belief that you can.

  • The University of South Australia is a

    globally-focused, locally-engaged institution

established on the dual principles of equity

    and excellence.

    Through our commitment to world-class

teaching, learning and research, we are

equipping and inspiring individuals to fulfil

their potential, and working closely with

communities to tackle the challenges of

    today and the future.

With around 35,000 students, the University

is South Australias largest and was ranked

11th in Australia and in the top three per

cent of more than 10,000 universities

worldwide in the 2011 QS World

University Rankings. It offers more than 400

degree programs across a wide range of

    subjects including business, law, education,

arts and social sciences, health sciences,

    information technology, engineering and the

    environment.

These are designed in close collaboration

with industry to ensure our graduates are

equipped to the highest possible level in

order to succeed in their chosen profession,

and which offer unrivalled opportunities for

    integrating work experience into study.

We believe the reputation of a university is

determined largely by the quality of its

graduates, and we are proud that more than

90 per cent of our graduates now in full-time

    work are employed in professional

occupations, which is well above the

    national average.

The University of South Australia remains

    strongly committed to ensuring the

Introducing the University of South Australia

    opportunities offered by our innovative,

work-focused programs are available to a

diverse range of students, including those

    from disadvantaged backgrounds. We

    recently established UniSA College to

provide a pathway for people who have not

    traditionally accessed university study, and

are investing more than $1 billion over the

next decade in new physical and virtual

    infrastructure across our campuses to

provide students and staff with the most up-

    to-date facilities.

Our commitment to excellence is also

reflected in the calibre of our academics and

researchers. The proportion of University of

    South Australia staff with doctorate

    qualifications remains well above the

national average. In addition, the most

recent national Excellence in Research for

Australia evaluation reported that 70 per

cent of our assessed research was rated

    world-class or above.

As well as making a significant contribution

to our economy and society at state and

national level, UniSA is an integral partner in

a range of community events, including as a

long-term supporter of the Santos Tour

Down Under UCI WorldTour cycling race, and

    the Adelaide Festival of Arts.

As it celebrates its 21st birthday in 2012, the

University of South Australia is building on

its proud past to secure an exciting future.

  • While formally celebrating its 21st birthday in

2012, the University of South Australias

reputation for teaching, learning and research

excellence stretches back more than 150 years.

    Our innovative, world-class university was

established in 1991, bringing together a

    number of pioneering antecedent institutions

including Australias first public art school

(the South Australian School of Art, founded

in 1856) which counts many celebrated

Australian artists among its graduates. They

include Jeffrey Smart, who in 2011 received

the honorary degree of Doctor of the

    University.

Our history also incorporates the colonys first

    Teachers Training College, established in

1876, and which quickly earned high regard

for the quality of teachers it trained. Then, in

1889, the landmark South Australian School

of Mines and Industries was founded on twin

ideals - to strengthen the colonys economic

base by increasing its number of educated

professionals, and to provide more equitable

access to education for a broader range of

    people.

These principles, as well as the disciplines

upon which these enterprises were founded

arts, teaching, engineering and the sciences

remain cornerstones of the University of South

Australias vision to equip and inspire

individuals, and to work closely and

    collaboratively with communities.

The University of South Australia Act

established a university with a mission to

    create and disseminate knowledge through

    high-quality teaching, research, scholarship

and consultancy, to ensure the inquiring

minds of today receive the opportunities and

the tools to realise their goals, and to help

our local and global communities address

the foremost challenges of our time.

In 2012, the University of South Australia has

established itself as a significant and

    respected element of Australia's higher

education sector. Its historical strengths in the

arts and sciences, business, technology and

humanities have formed the basis of its

innovative joint degrees, and its collaborative,

    multi-disciplinary outlook.

From this blend of youth and tradition, the

University of South Australia has emerged as

    a mature and outward-looking university

modern, flexible, accessible, and in touch with

    the needs of the community.

    Over 150 years of experience

  • Mortarboard tassels for Indigenous

    Australian graduates

The University of South Australia is proud of

    its commitment to Australian reconciliation.

To enable Indigenous Australians to have

    their ancestry recognised, Aboriginal and

Torres Strait Islander graduates have the

option of wearing a mortarboard with

a tassel incorporating the colours of the

respective flags (red, black and gold for

Aboriginal graduates and blue, green and

white for Torres Strait Islander graduates).

Over the centuries, gowns have evolved in

various forms from the original outer garment

or robe commonly worn by the laity and

members of the clergy, to the many modern

versions for the various levels of academic

awards. Hoods have developed from the

head coverings worn by students in the early

ages. They were especially useful in inclement

weather and in the draughty cloisters of

    monasteries.

At Canterbury, in the 13th century, the monks

hoods were lined with fur because of the cold.

Windows in those days were not glazed.

It would seem that no matter how young

a university is, one of the first priorities is

to adopt a style of academic dress which

    is distinctive.

The University of South Australia is no

exception. In 1991, UniSA acknowledged the

academic dress of its predecessor institutions

and then in February 1992, the Universitys

academic dress was determined by the

Council and the first graduation ceremonies

wearing the new UniSA academic dress

occurred during April 1992. It is interesting

to note that the hood chosen is of Oxford

Burgon style while the gown is of the

Cambridge style, an interesting link with

two of the greatest European universities

    of the Middle Ages.

    History of academic dress

Academic dress has a long history, almost

as long as that of universities themselves.

It began with the foundation of the

European universities in the 12th and 13th

centuries. Until that time, education was

carried out within the monasteries, such as

one at Oxford where divinity, philosophy and

arts were studied as early as the 8th century.

It was not until the 12th century that groups

of teachers and students gathered together

for classes outside monastery walls in a move

that was recognisable as the beginnings of

universities. Two of the outstanding schools

at that time were in Bologna and Paris.

During the 13th century the Roman legal

word universitas became a common name

for study groups. The third great university

of the Middle Ages, Oxford, emerged at that

time. Much of the symbolism of academic

dress is bound up with the history of those

early universities which have influenced the

creation and maintenance of a distinctive

    form of dress.

In the earliest times, university statutes

    concerning academic costume were

somewhat vague, and it was not until the

late 14th and early 15th centuries, as lay

fashions began to change, that universities

began to adopt the policy of setting down

particular requirements for the shape and

    cut of academic dress.
