Picture perfect graduation Pescadero High School
Celebrating with friends:Pescadero High School celebrated the graduation of its 88th class on Friday. Clockwise from left, students gathered outside of the gymnasium prior to ceremonies. Inside the gym, students walked through a knotted branch archway on their way to receive their diplomas. Students toss their mortarboards into the air. Students listen to speakers prior to receiv-ing their diplomas. Girls peer out of the girls’ locker room as they wait to enter the gym.

Ceremony and Celebration:Surrounded by friends, family and faculty, the Class of 2010 heard from valedictorian Kathleen Abadie (upper right) and salutatorian Elijah Abramson (lower, second from left). With John Evans conducting the Cougar Band through “Pomp and Circumstance,” students entered in pairs — some with their own special flair of secret handshakes and piggy-back rides. Following the music slideshow and a turn of the tassel, the students tossed their caps in the air.

o’Connor makes math her callingJacqueline O’Connor has conquered the mathematics syl-
labus at Half Moon Bay High School. There is simply nothing left for her to learn.
“Algebra I, Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, Calcu-lus…” She rattles off the disciplines she has mastered as if she were talking about easy electives. So proficient is O’Connor that she has spent a portion of her senior year working as a teaching assistant for one of her favorite in-structors, Half Moon Bay High math teacher Amy Treanor.
O’Connor plans to major in math at Sonoma State Col-lege in the fall. She wants to teach math upon her college graduation.
She says she learned as much by observing Treanor as she did from the lessons themselves.
“I liked her as a teacher because she challenged me,” O’Connor said. “She rewards you when you do well, too.”
O’Connor’s interests extend well beyond the classroom. She says she loves teaching swimming at La Petite Baleen in Half Moon Bay. And she is very excited about a post-gradua-tion trip to Spain with friends from school.
She grew up on the coast and has two siblings with her at the high school. Because she has gone to school with her classmates for years, they feel almost like family.
“I like this town, but I haven’t been able to meet a lot of new people,” she said. “There are so many other places to see.”
— Clay Lambert
Every graduate has a story. While the very best students and athletes nor-
mally draw the headlines, each and every student receiving a diploma
at Pescadero and Half Moon Bay high schools has left an imprint on
the campus.
Some are planning for college, envisioning far-off adventures or trips just over
the hill to campuses familiar to family and friends. Others are moving into the
working world. All are taking a step they will never forget.
This year the Review asked the schools to nominate a few exemplary students.
While all are clearly stars in the classroom, they aren’t necessarily the top of their
class. Instead, they are students who have plotted their own direction and are
set to face the wider world. We hope you’ll enjoy learning a bit about some talented
young neighbors. — Clay Lambert

tamez takes her dreams to oregon
Becky Tamez has a mathematician’s command of the relevant numbers. As she met with a visitor in a conference room at Half Moon Bay High School, there were exactly 127 days till she reported as a freshman to the Universi-
ty of Oregon. It would be 53 days until orientation at the college. She was looking forward to 105 days of freedom ev-ery school-age kid knows as summer.
Goodness knows, she has earned a couple days off.Regular readers of the Review know Tamez as an athlete. She has played soccer, water polo and run track during
her time at the high school. A serious knee injury caused her to throttle back a bit in this, her senior year.“I had to drop a sport,” she said. “Plus I had (Advanced Placement) biology and I’m no good in biology. I knew I
wouldn’t get an ‘A’ if I played three sports.”It took knee surgery and months in a cast to slow her down. It would take a full body cast to bring all of her activi-
ties to a halt.Actually, the months Tamez spent in the cast last summer, following surgery to repair her shattered knee, allowed
her time to focus on the future.“It forced me to do college research,” she said. “I spent the summer on my bed with my laptop.”She chose Oregon because the weather mimicked her beloved Coastside and because it promised a serene place to
study chemistry and a second major — one that came to her after her injury — pre-physical therapy.Tamez also plans to continue playing the flute.“It’s such a cliché, for a girl to play the flute,” she said. Tamez plans to audition for the university’s symphonic
band when she arrives in Eugene.— Clay Lambert

Zell trains artistic eye on future
You don’t have to look far to see evidence that Ian Zell is an artist. Walk inside the main entrance to the Half Moon Bay High School administration and look to your left. That’s Zell’s piece on the wall.
His work has adorned countless school posters through the years. He’s presented dozens of works as class as-signments. And he cops to doodling his way through many a class over the course of his high school career.
What may be a diversion for some, can be considered a passion and career training for Zell. After graduation, Zell will head to Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, where he is one of 10 in-
coming freshmen accepted into the school’s premier animation program.“I’m always drawing weird creatures,” he says. “I do it subconsciously.”Zell doesn’t just draw. He draws well. He has twice taken the school’s Advanced Placement art classes. Last
year, instructor Larkin Evans says, he achieved the highest score possible. His art isn’t one-dimensional, and neither is the artist. He plays baritone saxophone when time allows and
has taken a full load of AP classes. He says his senior year was stressful at times, “but it’s self-imposed.”Like many of his classmates, Zell is a bit ambivalent about leaving Half Moon Bay — where he grew up with
a close-knit group of friends — for the wider world. He figures a career in animation is likely to take him to Los Angeles or another media hub.
“It’s comforting here,” he said.— Clay Lambert

pescadero class president heads to portland
Pescadero High School senior Caroline Pisani is undaunted by stereotype. She knows full well that many people consider her favorite school subjects — math and science — to be
male bastions.“There definitely are gender stereotypes in this world,” she said matter-of-factly and with a
smile that says more than words do.This fall Pisani heads north to study mechanical engineering at the University of Portland, in
Portland, Ore. She said she may minor in biology with an eye to a career in bio-engineering.“I just fell in love with the campus,” she explained. She fell in love with math and science much earlier. She grew up in La Honda and has attend-
ed South Coast schools throughout her academic life. She has taken five years worth of math classes from Pescadero teacher Julie Howe. Now she helps tutor freshmen in Howe’s classes.
“She really helped me realize my passion for math,” Pisani said.Pisani has many interests. She is the senior class president at Pescadero High. She participat-
ed in soccer, basketball and volleyball at the school and plays classical and jazz piano for fun. This summer she is planning a road trip with her sister, Isabelle, who is herself a student at
the school. That, and working at a Coastside restaurant to save money for school.Who knows? She might even find time to finish the jewelry she has been making in the
school’s metal shop. “It’s in pieces right now,” she says with the same smile, the one that lets you know she finishes what she starts.

Follow The Path That Makes You HappyCongratulations Class of 2010
Rogel has big plans for dual careers
Lucero Rogel has high aspirations. And that’s an understatement. The Pescadero High School senior heads to the University of California, Santa
Cruz, in the fall and says with a straight face that she may want to pursue careers in med-icine — and the law.
“I want to be a doctor because I want to help people,” she said. “But I’m also interested in immigration. I may be a lawyer too.”
Don’t dismiss the notion. Rogel has already come a long way. Born on the Peninsula, she and her mother moved to Mexico for a time. She is the product of Pescadero schools, however, and has been with many of her classmates since the second grade.
She has excelled at Pescadero High School and is among the first her teachers mention when asked about their brightest students. Social studies (“I’m interested in the govern-ment,” she says) and math are her favorite subjects, and she spends a lot of time with her computer in the library.
Rogel is the first of four siblings to finish at Pescadero. Flor is a junior now, Eduardo is in the eighth grade, and Jesus is in fifth grade. The eldest sibling’s high school graduation is cause for celebration for the entire family.
“We’re going to go out to eat and celebrate,” she said. “We may go to the boardwalk in Santa Cruz.”
Rogel is the first in her immediate family to go to college. She said she will major in biochemistry or political science.

aguayo to turn aptitude for engines into career
Xavier Aguayo has already had his last summer of frivolity on the coast. The Half Moon Bay High School senior leaves for Laramie, Wyo., later this month. Aguayo
is hitting the road to study the intricacies of diesel engines at Wyo Tech. Why, Wyo?“I’ve been there before — hunting,” Aguayo said.Aguayo has made the most of vocational training at Half Moon Bay High School.
He has taken the general shop course that exposes students to metal arts, woodwork-ing and technical drawing. He’s taken the small engines course that pointed the way to Wyoming and a future career.
He says he wishes there were more opportunities for vocational training at the high school. He’s also been active in the high school’s Future Farmers of America chapter. He says he’d like to return to Half Moon Bay when his education is finished.
As is so often the case, Aguayo is a legacy. His sister Sara, now 22, matriculated from Half Moon Bay High before him. He says many of his classmates are almost family at this point. He’s been taking classes with the same students for most of his life.
He knows most of his classmates are planning one last big summer before going off to college or starting their adult lives. Aguayo smiles when asked how he feels about giving up his last chance for a real summer to go off to school in June.
“I’m kind of envious,” he admits.— Clay Lambert

Our Best Wishes tothe Class of 2010!
France let his play do the talking
Nik France is never one to toot his own horn. Whether he played football or baseball, he worked
hard in practice, and played hard in the games. He made big plays in both sports and always
shared the spotlight with team mates. He was named the Peninsula Athletic League
Ocean Division Defensive Player of the Year and was a second-team choice for baseball.
As a result, France is the Half Moon Bay High School Boys’ Athlete of the Year.
France was a two-year player on the varsity base-ball team. He made contributions that captured ev-eryone’s fancy last year, as the team made it to the semifinals of the Central Coast Section playoffs, de-spite being the No. 13 seed.
It was on the football field where France really made his mark, though it didn’t begin well for him in his sophomore year.
He was the starting quarterback, but the offense could never get it in gear. He moved to running back with Nick Moss taking over the quarterback chores.
The Cougars won four of their final seven games. Half Moon Bay went 7-3 in 2008 and 6-4 in 2009. In those latter two years, the Cougars just missed out qualifying for the playoffs.
The ending of the 2009 season was difficult since the Cougars dropped their final three games. Had they won one of those three games, the Cougars would have been in the playoffs.
The final loss, a 27-26 decision to Terra Nova, was hard to swallow as the Tigers took the lead for good with less than a minute left in the game.
“We were able to get over the game,” France said. “But it was a very good season. It was the most fun I ever had playing a sport.”
Hamilton, Irish leave mark on track
Lauren Irish and Sammy Hamilton ar-rived at Half Moon Bay High School with the desire to run.
Four years later, the two graduated from the high school, leaving a big legacy.
Irish became the first person in school history to qualify for two state track and field championships and to qualify for two events in the state track and field meet.
When she won the Central Coast Section cross-coun-try title as a freshman, Hamilton became the first girl from Half Moon Bay to win a CCS individual title in any sport. She won another CCS title two years later and helped Half Moon Bay win a team title last fall.
The two played a key role as the Cougars’ finished tied for second at this year’s Peninsula Athletic League Track and Field Championships. Hamilton also qualified for the state track and field championships this year.
The two share the honor as co-Girls’ Athletes of the Year at Half Moon Bay High School.
The two had a track history when they arrived at Half Moon Bay, having run for the Cunha Intermediate School team.
“Middle school track is way different from high school track,” said Irish, who is bound for the Univer-sity of California, San Diego. “It’s hard to imagine what has happened.”
Hamilton was just as shocked with her success. She quickly elevated herself as one of the top long distance runners in the CCS.
“I pushed myself very hard,” said Hamilton, bound for New Mexico State. “I am amazed to find myself among the elite runners.”
The two will continue to run at their respective colleges.
“I just fell in love with the school and the pro-gram,” said Irish.
It took Hamilton longer to run 3,200 meters than it did to pick New Mexico State.
“Everyone was very nice to me,” Hamilton said. “They made me feel right at home.”

HMB honorable mentions
There were several athletes at Half Moon Bay High School who left their own mark in the athletic programs. They are represented on the school’s annual honorable mention list.
Josh Dunne: football, track and field. Dunne never came off the field during football season. He was a key running back offen-sively, a linebacker defensively, and played special teams. He was named the league’s Utility Player of the Year. He’s also a two-time Peninsula Athletic League track and field champion in the high jump.
James Anderson: water polo, tennis. Anderson was an all-league selection in both sports. He was one of the Cougars’ top scorers on the water polo team. He won most of singles matches as Half Moon Bay’s No. 1 singles player.
Alex Reis: basketball. A gym rat, Reis proved too quick for opponents, looking for his shot or to find someone else to pass to. The Cougars’ top scorer, he was named co-MVP of the PAL Lake Division, in helping the Cougars win the league title.
Jerika Barron: volleyball, basketball, softball. An all-league selection in two sports, Barron was a starter for all three teams. She earned a starting spot for the softball team in her sophomore year, and remained there for the rest of her three-year career.
Carrie Turgeon: soccer. A two-time, first-team all-league se-lection, Turgeon was named the league’s Goalie of the Year. She will take her skills to Notre Dame de Namur.
Talent, attitude key success
Ricardo Cabrera continues to leave his mark on Pescadero High School sports.
He repeats as the Boys’ Athlete of the Year, and not solely because of his accomplishments on the field.
He was named team MVP for both soccer and bas-ketball. But what makes him stand out is his attitude.
“In our program, he’s exceptional at hustling, diving for loose balls,” said basketball coach Casey Norton. “Regardless of the score, he still plays hard.”
Pescadero went 0-19 this year, losing by an average of 35 points per game.
“To maintain the energy despite losing by a lot, that’s key,” Norton said.
His leadership skills extend well beyond the
game stats.“He was offering his time to help others do their
homework,” said soccer coach, Ignacio Martinez.Hard work doesn’t faze the junior. He thrives on it.
Many call him a role model. Cabrera doesn’t have to look far for his role model.
“I got the leadership skills from my dad,” Cabrera said. “He’s the manager of a local nursery.
“If something needs to get done, I will do it,” Ca-brera said. “I just do it. I don’t think about it twice.”
He has no plans to put up his feet this summer. He will work, then get ready for his senior year of school.
“If he continues with his good grades, he can play at a college,” Martinez said.
Whatever college he attends, he will bring his work ethic with him, as well as his attitude.
“If we lose, but try our hardest, I will be happy,” Cabrera said.
Bus rides best memories for Curran, Pisani
Lindsay Curran and Caroline Pisani have memories of their four years of playing sports at Pescadero High School.
There were exciting games in volleyball, winning the league soccer tourna-ment and moments in basketball.
But their favorite memory was not of a game. Games might not make the top 10 list of things they remember of the four years playing for the Vikings.
“I remember all the bus trips,” said Curran with a laugh. Pisani agreed. The co-Pescadero High School Girl Athletes of the Year spent more time talk-
ing about the bus trips and the fun than games. “Those were great chances to bond,” Pisani said. The two weren’t surprised to share the honor. They spent the most time on
the bus, playing volleyball, basketball and soccer. The basketball season was especially challenging, as they were the only re-
turnees to the team. “We were responsible to get more players out for the team,” Pisani said.Though the wins were hard to come by in basketball, the two still had fun, es-
pecially on the bus. The best bus ride came last fall after the Vikings won their first every North
Coast Section playoff game. Pisani has concluded her sports career. Scheduled to attend the University
of Portland, she hopes to play some intramural sports, while working toward a
double major in mechanical engineering and biology.Curran will try and walk on to the team at the University of California, Davis
while majoring in animal science. While they will be far away from their homes and friends, they will still be
close in their hearts. “We will have a reunion when we come home for summer,” Pisani said.
