Programs by courseworkSwinburne offers a series of postgraduate qualifications by coursework, with many areas offering a nested suite of programs. This flexible delivery gives you the option of multiple exit and entry points, allowing you to study a qualification that will suit your needs.

Graduate certificateThis is usually an entry-level postgraduate qualification for applicants with several years work experience. It is also an attractive alternative for those without any formal academic qualifications. A graduate certificate generally takes six months full-time or one year part-time to complete. On successful completion of the graduate certificate, students may apply to progress to the graduate diploma.

Graduate diplomaThe graduate diploma is generally a one year full-time or two year part-time course.

Applicants must normally have undertaken an undergraduate degree, though not necessarily in the proposed area of study. Applicants without a degree, but with substantial appropriate industry experience, may also be eligible to apply.

MasterThe duration of a master degree by coursework varies by study area, but is generally from one to two years full-time or equivalent part-time. Applicants must normally have undertaken an undergraduate degree.

Master (honours)Available in selected areas, master (honours) degrees usually require at least an extra six months of full-time (or equivalent part-time) study after completion of a master program. There is often a requirement that in order to be awarded the master (honours) that students have a distinction average during the master stage of their postgraduate study.

home to some of australia’s most dynamic and innovative academics, we provide a challenging yet supportive environment for our students. as a result, Swinburne graduates are in high demand by industry with excellent career prospects.

Flexibility

Study modesMost of our postgraduate coursework programs can be taken on a full-time or part-time basis, with classes offered in the day or evening or on weekends. This means your life doesn’t need to stop when you enrol. In addition to traditional on-campus study, Swinburne offers a number of flexible delivery options including:

distance education – Distance education is a flexible mode of delivery, in which on-campus attendance is either not required or kept to a minimum. Students are provided with a range of comprehensive learning materials that may include study guides, readings, set exercises and references. Some distance education programs also integrate online learning into course delivery.

online delivery – A number of Swinburne programs are available entirely online, with others offering selected online units. Students who choose to study online have access to a range of benefits and technological innovations. These may include virtual lectures, eTutors, and access to learning communities through email and group chatrooms.

Block release – Block release mode allows students to attend classes in intensive blocks (usually for several full day sessions), rather than regular weekly classes. This is particularly beneficial for regional or interstate students who need to travel to attend campus.

Intakes and semestersSwinburne programs generally have two key intakes (late February/early March and late July/early August) – however a number of programs also have additional commencement dates throughout the year. This means you don’t have to wait until next year to get your career on track.

For those who want to speed up their studies, some programs also offer an optional summer semester and winter term.

To find out more about key dates visit the ‘What you need to know’ section on the postgrad website at www.swinburne.edu.au/postgrad

Returning to study and work-life balanceReturning to student life can be difficult. That’s why Swinburne has developed the Academic Success Program and provides a range of support services – including counselling, workshops and online resources – to ease the transition and to help equip students with the skills they need to succeed.

International Exchange ProgramThe International Exchange Program allows you to take one full-time semester abroad. You will study at one of Swinburne’s many partner universities around the globe.

On exchange, you remain enrolled in Australia and pay your regular tuition fees at Swinburne, maintaining access to all the Swinburne support networks. All tuition fees at the host university are waived as part of the exchange program. If you are a part-time student, a full-time semester of exchange is an opportunity to fast-track your studies and graduate sooner.

As postgraduate programs are very specialised and tailored, each application for exchange is considered and approved on a case-by-case basis.

Industry relevance

Strong linksSwinburne was a pioneer of Industry-Based Learning in Australia, with the first programs offered to undergraduate engineering students in 1963. Over the years these strong links with industry have spread to other disciplines in the university, and are reflected through our highly relevant dynamic courses and programs. Many postgraduate coursework programs involve close industry interaction. Students undertake supervised project work addressing key issues in the real world environment, or work on projects with their own employers.

Employer sponsorshipAt Swinburne we encourage employers to sponsor their employees in further study.

Our postgraduate programs are geared towards real-world learning that benefits both you and your organisation.

Your employer will benefit from your enhanced skills and up-to-date knowledge. Also, because our postgraduate coursework programs are closely involved with industry, you will undertake project work in authentic conditions and, where appropriate, may work on projects with your own employer. This means you are contributing straight back to your organisation.

As a student you will gain the skills and knowledge needed to further develop your career with your employer covering the costs for some or all of your professional development.

Professional recognitionMany of Swinburne’s postgraduate programs are recognised by professional organisations. This means your qualification will be highly regarded in industry and will enhance your career opportunities.

Kate Stevenson Graduate Diploma of Arts (Commercial Radio)

I chose to study Swinburne’s commercial radio program because I wanted to get a job in the industry. I wanted more of an idea about what to expect when I got out there, as well as industry contacts and first-hand experience. I got it all . . . and then some!

“Since completing the program I have been able to train on some of the most listened to and most respected talk programs in Melbourne, and land myself a job at a top station. I’ve just been appointed senior producer for Derryn Hinch’s drive program at 3AW.”

I am a lifelong learner. I wanted to work through Swinburne’s program in the context of my 20 years of business experience. Since completing the program I have been able to think differently, work differently and change my life quite considerably – for the better.

Why undertake postgraduate study?

There are many reasons why students choose to undertake postgraduate study.

For first degree holders, postgraduate study can offer the chance to pursue extended research (requisite for a career in academia), enter the world of work at a higher salary level, or acquire vocational training and skills.

With an increase in the number of students pursuing university study each year, competition for graduate employment is becoming progressively more difficult.

For those students who have a specific career path in mind, evidence of postgraduate education and/or training could make all the difference to prospective employers.

What is the difference between postgraduate coursework and research programs?

Postgrad coursework programs usually involve the attendance of lectures, classes or seminars and may, depending on the level of qualification, require a minor thesis. These qualifications are awarded by following a set stream of core units and electives.

Research qualifications are awarded following the completion of a major thesis, involving original research, under the supervision of a senior academic. When undertaking research programs learning is undertaken independently and there are no lectures or classes.

What are typical pathways to postgraduate study?

There are various pathways to a postgraduate program. For higher degrees by research, a traditional path has been for academically gifted (credit average or better) students to enrol in an honours year after their undergraduate degree. If successful in this course (which usually includes a research topic, project or essay), they then move on to a research master (sometimes called an honours master) degree or straight into a PhD.

It is possible, however, to enrol in a postgraduate coursework program such as a graduate certificate or graduate diploma on the basis of relevant employment, or in some cases, life experience. You may then progress to a higher-level postgraduate qualification on the basis of your success.

In a similar way, enrolment in a master by coursework can follow relevant work experience and/or the successful completion of a graduate certificate, graduate diploma or undergraduate degree which is deemed by the university as suitable and adequate preparation.

What is a conditional offer?

You can apply for postgraduate study, even if your current program is not yet complete. Swinburne will issue a conditional offer and you will then need to submit your final results before or during enrolment. The type of evidence you will be required to submit may include:

w official or certified copies of academic transcripts

w completion letters or certificates

What is Fee-Help and am I eligible?

FEE-HELP is a loan given to eligible fee-paying students to help pay part or all of their tuition fees. Students can choose to defer all or part of the cost of the fee-paying course and pay their debt back through the taxation system.

You are entitled to FEE-HELP assistance if you:

w are undertaking study at an approved higher education provider or Open Universities Australia

w meet the citizenship or residency requirements

w are enrolled in eligible unit(s) on or before the census date and remain registered at the end of the census date

w are not Commonwealth-supported in relation to that unit(s)

w meet the tax file number (TFN) requirements

w have completed, signed and submitted a valid Request for FEE-HELP Assistance form on or before the census date

w have not exceeded the FEE-HELP limit
