The Graduate School of International
Cooperation Studies (GSICS) was established
in 1992 and offers four academic programs:
International Studies, Development and
Economics, International Law and Institution
Building, and Political Science, providing a
number of courses taught in English.
Currently, international students from over
twenty countries account for about forty
percent of our students. One of our aims is
to train graduate students who are interested
in pursuing international careers. Academic
activities at GSICS, therefore, encourage our
students to acquire expertise and
multidisciplinary knowledge through a
flexible curriculum. For the international
exchange of knowledge, GSICS often
convenes international conferences and
symposia and invites leading specialists from
all over the world to deliver special lectures
and seminars.
of United Nations agencies. For students
seeking employment in Japan, GSICS
arranges guidance and information sharing,
and for those pursuing careers in international
organizations, development agencies, and
private firms, GSICS organizes a series of
seminars on job seeking skills. We welcome
international students who wish to join our
vibrant academic community.
We also encourage our students to participate
in internships and placements in domestic
and international organizations, and
recognize the importance of these activities
by awarding credits for them, as well as
partially subsidizing students’ travel costs. A
number of students have so far taken part in
internships at the World Bank, Inter-American
Development Bank, JICA, JBIC (Japan Bank
for International Cooperation), and a number
The GSICS Program for Careers in International Organizations is now in its fifth year, with more career seminars and more graduate student internships in international organizations than ever before. The internships with the UN Office for Drugs and Organized Crimes (Bangkok, Thailand), the International Criminal Court (The Hague, Netherlands), and the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (Geneva, Switzerland) are just a fraction of the internships being filled by GSICS students with the financial support of this Program. Such internships for graduate students are an important step in their career development. Recently a graduate student obtained a one-year contract as a research assistant for the Special Rapporteur for Disability after her initial internship with the Office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights (Geneva, Switzerland). This graduate student is currently working as an NGO officer in Africa.
I am an Economic Planning Officer in the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning, Ghana. Since joining GSICS as a master’s student, my knowledge on economics has expanded greatly. The overall academic environment, particularly the well-equipped reading room and the internet facility, which are both accessible 24 hours a day, together with the well-stocked library have made my learning very relaxed and exciting. In addition to the academic benefits I have received over the past several months, I have also learnt so much from the truly multicultural environment at GSICS. Interacting with people from diverse backgrounds has significantly broadened my horizons. I am also convinced that the structure of the courses will make me more competitive in the Ministry and in life in general. All in all, my academic life at GSICS has been very rewarding thanks to the support from both academic and administrative staff, none more so than my academic supervisor.
