I am an ambitious aspiring architect that has most recently completed my Master Degree from the University of Oregon, Portland Urban design program (A+AA|PDX). Before moving to Portland two years ago I completed my undergraduate in architecture at the University of Minnesota. I was born and raised in Minnesota, and after completing my B.S. in Architecture I decided to move to the west coast to further my educational and career goals. I was drawn to Portland specifically because of my desire to design sustainably, urban planning, and the ability to practice urban design in an urban environment. Before attending the University of Minnesota and while in High School, I was heavily involved with technology. I use to repair, network, teach, and write code for computer before wanting to explore my architectural design abilities. I am highly logical, well organized, and very good at math which led me to at first want to pursue structural engineering, but after studying art and architectural history for several years I abandon that course in pursuit of a more cultural focused discipline. Currently I work at the University of Oregon supporting their large format printers, scanners, and other technology equipment for architects, professors, and students alike. I approach architecture with a technological mind, but I constantly challenge myself to utilize the benefits of pencil and paper. After personally witnessing Jim Cutler and another well respected architect in Mexico (Daniel Lopez), both of whom I studied under, communicate complex thoughts visually with relatively simple sketches on their projects I am convinced of the power of the pencil. But while I challenge myself to sketch as much as possible in an increasingly highly technological world, I balance that ability with the power that technology holds. I am most interested it BIM modeling and how it can inform sustainable design decisions. My goal is to become an expert this area, and it is my hope that this will lead me to become a technical expert in other areas such as sustainable enclosure design, lighting, and thermal comfort. I believe that becoming an expert in these areas will aid in my ability be an efficient architect, both in the field and in the office. Finally, and in closing, I enjoy the ability to work with others and on teams. One of my most successful accomplishments to date was leading a team of students at the University of Minnesota to win a Google SketchUp competition. As a member on the team I am proud of the accomplishment because as a team were able work very well together. As a self appointed leader I am proud of this accomplishment because I enjoy leading in situations where leadership or focus is absent. Leadership is a delicate skill, always with a little touch and almost never with a heavy hand.

The East Bank Portland Opera House a graduate thesis project that attempts to bring the performing arts to east bank of Willamette River. The Opera is part of a larger urban plan for Portland’s central east bank industrial district. The First and most dramatic element of the master plan is the removal the interstate highway that runs along the east bank. In fact that removal of the interstate was an initial challenge that was under taken with the intention of a smart urban revitalization of the area. The opera being was determined to be the anchor building of a new media & performing arts district. The opera was designed to be an iconic system for city of Portland that symbolizes progress, growth, and identity.

The Concept of the East Bank Opera House is idea of an urban forest. A nationally known characteristic of the city of Portland is its integration with nature. While the Pacific Northwest in general is known for its beautiful forests, many trees were removed in the process of building the city. The concept of the urban forest is an attempt to reunite the city with its ecological heritage. Similar to old timber piers the supported the docks that supported the industries that once were critical to the city economic vitality a column slab structural was chosen to support the opera above the Willamette River and its floodplain. The idea for the space below was to be a free plan market.

The Belmont Library Project investigated the possibility of constructing a smaller urban infill community library. A major challenge that the project faced was to determine what are the essential feature for a modern library today with mobile technology and the internet playing an ever increase role in how we consume information. Also we what does a library mean to a community as a gathering place? A procession of light and function became the concept for the Belmont Library project. The idea was influenced by Steven’s Holl’s Chapel of St. Ignatius in Seattle. With the Belmont library project, shear walls that face south reflect light in to the major programmatic functions through a combination of clearstories and skylights in the library. S i t e

The Mississippi Co-Housing residential project explores a relativity non-typical architectural typology with the intention of creating a better community both internal and externally. Co-housing design can be difficult because it is important to establish a community with in the boundaries of the property but also with surround larger nieghborhood community. Taking into consideration Portland’s climate and the site’s topology the concept of an urban gully was invoked. The idea of a housing project designed around the idea of a gully suited the project well because it dictated that there is be central spine in which circulation, runoff, and major

The 5th Street mixed use Residential Tower project was an investigation into how to create market rate apartments in downtown Portland while maintaining the food cart street culture already present on the site. The studio was taught by Jim Cutler, and the focus of the project was less about individual concepts and more about a group investigation into the design of market rate residential units above a functional market and offices. The residential tower typology utilized was that of a skip-stop arrangement. Each unit would have access to both the Northwest & Southeast light which are the two directions that are perpendicular to the buildings long axis. Entrances to the for both the offices and residental units are located toward the back of the site, seperated by function, and at the far corners.

These sketches are drawing that I made when I first arrived in Portland. I was fascinated with city and wanted to capture it in a way that would help better understand the city’s architecture.
