TREE SYSTEM
The tree system acts as a screening device along the paths and between the private chalets. The trees shield private spaces, frame views, and direct visitors along the pathways.
PATH SYSTEM
An intricate path system encourages visitors to explore the entirety of the site to connect with nature. Paths weave between pines while rustic stairs bring visitors up and down the mountainside.
BUILDING SYSTEM
The chalets are arranged together in small groups of two or three to facilitate personal connections with nature. Carefully placed pine trees and screening devices maintain privacy in each lodge.

HIGH-SPEED RAIL STATION Chicago, IllinoisProfessor Thrse TierneySpring 2011
The objective of the ITC Intermodal Transit Center is to encourage interaction beyond the visible. The intervention conceptualizes space as porous and connected, by allowing for spontaneous and random social exchanges. Points Of Digital Service or PODS leverage an increasing trend towards ubiquitous computing by creating an interface between work and play.
The concept of an interface is realized in the ITC through an organization diagram comprised of a collection of linked social nodes. PODS are situated at main circulation intersections, between public and private zones. Multiple circulation paths also allow for individual choice -- this spatial permeability engenders a perceptually new reconfi gured network each time an individual enters the structure and a different experience of space.

POINTS OF DIGITAL SERVICE
Based on different user experiences, connections are created at program intersections. At these strategic areas, technological hotspots are coupled with program and social interaction. P.O.D.S. are created to house the technology and bring users together for a unique travel experience.
PROGRAM LAYERING
Programmatic spaces are shifted to create a new multi-layered experience. This shift allows for new social and technological interaction within the station.

FUNERAL CHAPEL Champaign, IllinoisPlym Professor Juhani Pallasmaa & Professor Kevin HindersFall 2010
Mount Hope Cemetery is located south of Pennsylvania Avenue in Champaign, Illinois. The funeral chapel provides a space for the re ection and honor of the deceased.
The downhill approach is screened by existing trees which opens up to an outdoor space framed by the columbarium and the chapel. The building acts as a mediator between the columbarium, indoor to outdoor, and public to private spaces. The chapel and farewell room are spaces within larger boxes which create unique areas for light and shadow. The intent of the project is to examine how different screens can create a meaningful and comforting experience for those in mourning.

PERFORMING CENTER Paris, FranceProfessor Peter ArbourSpring 2008
Jazz music is a live and always changing music style. Many masters have come along through its history and each has given his or her own take and special twist on the music. Jazz has, from its early 20th century inception, spawned a variety of subgenres, from New Orleans Dixieland dating from the early 1910s, big band-style swing from the 1930s and 1940s, bebop from the mid-1940s, a variety of Latin-jazz fusions such as Afro-Cuban and Brazilian jazz from the 1950s and 1960s, jazz-rock fusion from the 1970s and later developments such as acid jazz.

MUSIC = ARCHITECTURE
Music, much like architecture, is based on mathematical proportions. When certain proportions between notes are achieved, a pleasing combination of notes creates extraordinary masterpieces. of notes creates extraordinary masterpieces.
MELODY = PLAN
The melody of music is the horizontal understanding of the notes. This is comparable to the oor plan of a building. The oor plan is the driving force, the horizontal relationships among spaces.
RHYTHM = FUNCTION
Rhythm refers to the time and length of musical notes. In reference to architecture, the function of a space is related to time. The exhibition space, practice hall, and the cafeteria are spaces that have dynamic functions based on a variety of time frames.
TIMBRE = MATERIALITY
Timbre describes the way certain instruments sound when played. This is much like the properties of materials in a building. The use of wood, glass, and other materials invoke certain feelings throughout the concert hall.

BATH HOUSE Paris, FranceProfessor Jean-Brice ViaudFall 2007
Intimacy in a public space, such as a bath house, is directly related to the relationship of spaces. It is the responsibility of the architect to take into account the necessity for privacy and also the need for social interaction among the buildings occupants.
The bath house is a very inviting place for people to enjoy a relaxing day at the spa. Once away from the stresses of everyday life, patrons can easily fi nd their way through the spaces to create a unique experience catered to their individual needs.
With a strange existing site geometry, the given program was forced to the east side of the building. In doing so, the most intimate spaces retain privacy while the more public spaces, such as the pool and sun deck, obtain more area.

CELLULAR INTERVENTION Chicago, IllinoisProfessor Thrse Tierney & Rich KocekSpring 2011
Cell phones have become an extension of daily human life. Cellular Intervention captures the usage of cell phones and turns it into an interactive art piece. As users pass through the corridor, each phone call, text message, and data transmission is transformed into a unique image that is projected on the wall.
These images are constantly changing based on the activity level within the space. Every users experience is unique due to the variety of frequency transmissions that occur on every phone throughout the day.
- SMS/ Data 1A rework image will appear whenever a user sends or receives data, text messages, or emails. The image will fade over time like a real rework.
In the same manner as the rework burst, a ripple eect will appear whenever a user sends or receives data. The ripple also fades over time.
When a user is talking on the phone, a streak appears and follows the position of the phone. Like the other visual eects, the streaks fade.

To whom it may concern,
Last Friday, May 6, 2011, Symbius participated in the 2011 International Mock Firms Competition in Chicago, Illinois at the Congress Plaza Hotel. Under the faculty supervision of Carl Lewis, Tashio Martinez and Derek Larsen, both graduate students in the School of Architecture at the University of Illinois, worked throughout the semester to organize a mock firm as well as a skyscraper located in Stockholm, Sweden. The team was awarded 2011 American Firm Runner-up and the Top Building Project among competition from University of Houston, University of North Carolina Greensbaro, DIS Copenhagen, Denmark and Birminghan City University, United Kingdom.
The Mock Firms model aims to help facilitate the formation and function of simulated architectural design firms by collegiate students. The purpose is to challenge the students to conceive, coordinate, construct and even commercialize a tall building project which will be interactively judged by top industry professionals against a field of their peers. The panel of jurors included Ralph Johnson (Perkins + Will), Tim Brown (Tim Brown Architects), Laura Kraft (Halverson and Partners), Anthony Wood (CTBUH), and Rene Steevensz (Studio Sym Design).
Tashio Martinez, Design Principal, recieved his Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in May, 2009 and will receive his Masters of Architecture in May, 2011. Derek Larsen, Marketing Director, received his Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in May, 2009 and will receive his Masters of Architecture and Masters of Business Administration in May, 2012. With their diverse talents and interests, they were able develop a winning design for the University of Illinois.
