My involvement with GSC the past year as

Councilor has strengthened my desire to

continue to develop a strong graduate

community on campus. This has stimulated me

to continue into the next year to encourage and

involve the graduate student body.

As GSC Chair I intend to continue the

philanthropic work that I have helped initiate

this semester by developing working

relationships with local communities in need. I

would like to continue to collaborate with each

school to understand what they want to achieve

while here at USD and support those ideas and

needs. I feel this will enhance the graduate

community’s voice and presence on campus. I

welcome you to visit our monthly meetings and

get involved to make your graduate experience

worthwhile.

Chair, 2011-2012

Andrew Gil

Student Bar Association

President, 2011-2012

In my time as a member of the SBA, I have

always considered myself to be a public servant.

I have never been content to do only what the

bylaws require of me; I always asked myself

how I could better serve the needs of my

classmates. As SBA President, I now have a

responsibility to use my position for the benefit

of all USD law students, and I have several goals

in mind for the next year intended to accomplish

that mission.

First, I want to improve communication between

the SBA and the student body. This means an

overhaul of the SBA website and the creation of

a master calendar of events. I hope to have these

up and running before the end of this academic

year. I also intend to improve the weekly email

system to ensure that the class representatives

are able to reach all of their constituents.

Second, I want the SBA officers to be more

accessible to the student body. I, for one, have

an open-door policy and encourage students to

contact me if they have a question or concern

([email protected]).

I also plan to start holding regular office hours

in the SBA office in Warren Hall to give

students an opportunity to meet with their

elected officials face-to-face. Addressing

student concerns is of particular importance as

we transition to a new Dean next year, as the

SBA will be in a position to inform the new

Dean as to what concerns are most important

to the students.

Finally, I want to open involvement in SBA to

more of the student body. There are a variety

of standing committees in the SBA that are

traditionally understaffed, as the elected

officers find themselves spread thin. Rather

than leaving positions unfilled or having

officers overworked, I see this as an

opportunity to get more students involved.

Election committee, social committee,

orientation committee, and others have

positions available for students who are

interested in getting involved with the SBA.

It is an honor and a privilege to serve as your

SBA President. With the assistance of a

fantastic executive board,

I am confident that we can implement

positive changes and make the SBA

truly serve the best interests of USD

law students.

Kristin Vander Kam Featured Student Profile:

Featured Grad Program:

Hailing from the School of Business, Kristin was one of the teammates (Bryan Jones, Elif

Ozer and Robin Luo) who recently placed 3rd

, behind UCLA and USC, in the ACG cup – a

major, national-wide business case competition at UC Irvine on March 9. USD’s Business

team competed against 10 other MBA schools from Southern California. Judges were from

local private equity funds, investment banks & law firms. It’s is by far the best finish for

USD in the event.

The ACG Cup is a case study competition where MBA students from local schools are

given an opportunity to present valuation, capital markets and M&A strategic advice to a

panel of seasoned professionals.

ACG is a very well-known association in the corporate finance industry and competitors of

ACG Cup are often recruited and hired by the sponsoring firms. USD will be able to use

the group’s win to attract future students interested in M&A and Corporate Finance. It says

a lot about USD’s finance department and the high quality of classes and professors USD

retains.

Kristin is from San Jose, CA and went to Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI for undergrad where she majored in

Business Communications. She made her way back to California pretty quickly after graduation and got a job in marketing

for a residential real estate company, Coldwell Banker. She decided to go back to grad school after realizing that she needed

more business skills to accomplish her career goals. Kristin wanted to stay in San Diego so USD was her top choice. The high

regard professionals in San Diego have for USD’s Business School was impressive to her. She also liked the offerings they

had for full-time working professionals.

She was accepted and started the evening program in Spring 2009. She decided to emphasize in finance and real

estate to round out her marketing background. Through her finance classes she became very interested in valuation and the

many implications it has for all industries, businesses and the larger economy.

Kristin mentions that her MBA experience at USD has been life changing. Not only has she received top quality

education, she has met some of the most interesting and motivating people. Her student peers have made the program as

valuable as the professors and classes. She is constantly challenged & motivated to consider different perspectives and

possibilities in the classroom. To top that experience off, she and her colleagues have a lot of fun outside the classroom too!

Kristin goal for the future is to enter the real estate finance industry. She is also open to other possibilities but that is where

she will start her job hunt and networking focus.

USD’s 30-unit MA in History program emphasizes both public history and the geographic region of the U.S. West

and Southwest. The Department of History is housed in the Kroc Institute of Peace & Justice. The program is

supervised by History faculty, and eight of the ten courses required for the program involve seminars in the

department. The two remaining courses are selected by the student from historically oriented courses in the fields of

political science, international relations, art history, theology and religious studies, literature, anthropology, ethnic

studies, sociology, education, business administration, and law.

Full-time students typically need two years to complete the program. Part-time study is also welcomed and

accommodated by a schedule that offers most graduate classes one evening per week. The goals of the program allow

students to pursue advanced understanding of history and to enhance their career options.
