A: The Battle of Gettysburg (as reported in The New York Times)

B: The Journal of John Dooley, Confederate Soldier

Session 1: Text A

PREVIEWING THE TEXT 5 minutes

Ask students to preview the article by scanning the headlines, text, and images. Encourage them to think about what type of information they will find in this article.

Read the title and scan the text. What do you notice about the article?

It’s a newspaper article from a long time ago. It tells about the Battle of Gettysburg.

What questions do you have that you think this article might answer?

What happened during this battle? Who was fighting? How many soldiers died?

Those are good questions. Keep them in mind as you read this article.

LEARNING FOCUS RI.5.2

Students read to determine the main ideas of a text, explain how key details support the main idea, and summarize the text.

KEY IDEA

A newspaper article from 1863 reports on the Battle of Gettysburg, the bloodiest battle of the Civil War.

MONDO BOOKSHOP GRADE 5 3

Session 2: Text B

PREVIEWING THE TEXT 5 minutes

Have students read the title and briefly scan the article. Encourage them to comment on what type of information the article provides.

Let’s read the title and look over the article to see what it’s about.

This article is about the Battle of Gettysburg, too. But this time a soldier fighting in the war is telling us what happened.

What do you think we could learn from this article?

the way things looked on the battlefield; what the soldier heard, like the sounds of guns or men yelling; how the soldier felt during this battle

Remember your comments as we read.

READING THE TEXT CLOSELY 5 minutes

Explain the learning focuses for this session. Guide students to identify key details given because of the first-person point of view and how the details support the main idea. Check to see how well students are applying the focuses and comprehending the information. Then read to the end.

As we read, think about who is sharing this information with us and how that affects what we are reading. Use those key details to explain how the main ideas are supported. Let’s read and summarize the first two paragraphs.

Confederate troops attacked the Yankees during Pickett’s Charge, but they lost the battle, which had a great effect on the outcome of the war.

Which details support this idea?

“Lee ordered his men to attack the Yankees head-on.” The two armies “clashed.” It was “a disaster for the Confederacy.” It was the “turning point in the war.”

Who is going to tell us about the battle?

John Dooley, a Confederate captain who was on the battlefield during Pickett’s Charge

What type of account will this be?

It’s a firsthand account because he was there, and it’s based on his personal experience.

Let’s read what John Dooley wrote.

DISCUSSING THE TEXT 10 minutes

Invite students to share what they learned about the main idea of this article and how the firsthand account adds to the reporting and description of this event. Encourage them to listen carefully to each other and add to each other’s ideas.

Let’s start with a summary of John Dooley’s journal entry.

John Dooley describes how soldiers prepared for battle and the first few moments of fighting.

LEARNING FOCUSES RI.5.2, RI.5.6

Students read closely in order to summarize the text and determine the main ideas and supporting details. Simultaneously, students analyze multiple accounts on the same topic in order to note similarities and differences in viewpoints.

KEY IDEA

John Dooley, a Confederate captain who was at the Battle of Gettysburg, describes his time on the battlefield in a journal entry.

SL.5.1c DISCUSSION Collaborative

CLOSE READING OPTION

E-RESOURCEE-RESOURCE SummativePrint the online blackline master for independent close reading. Ask students to read Text B and respond to the prompts (summarize author’s message, identify critical vocabulary, respond to constructed response questions) before returning for a small-group discussion.

TEACHER’SCHOICE

COMPREHENSION SHARE

A firsthand account is given by someone who experienced an event. A secondhand account is given by someone who did research and read firsthand accounts about the event.

MONDO BOOKSHOP GRADE 5 5

REFLECTING ON THE TEXTS 5 minutes

Ask students to reflect on what they learned about their reading work over the past sessions. Invite them to review and reflect on both articles.

Let’s think about what we’ve learned and practiced in our reading.

We identified a main idea then found details to support it. We summarized each article. We compared different accounts of the Battle of Gettysburg and discussed how they differed in focus and information.

Who can give us a brief summary of each article?

The first article was a newspaper article about the Battle of Gettysburg. The second article was a journal entry by John Dooley, a Confederate soldier who fought in the Battle of Gettysburg.

CROSS-TEXT ANALYSIS 5 minutes

Encourage students to draw on the specific information they identified in each article to compare and contrast the two texts.

Let’s think about the similarities and differences in these two texts about the Civil War. How are they alike?

They both describe the same battle, the Battle of Gettysburg.

How are they different?

The first article is a dry, “official” report, and the second is a more personal and descriptive account about what it was like to be there. Also, the “enemy” is different in each article.

What details do the two articles seem to agree on?

They both report that the Confederates opened fire on the Yankees and that Lee’s army retreated after the battle.

Guide students to synthesize the information from the articles. The analysis should lead to making connections and new understandings based on facts from both texts.

Let’s think about what we’ve learned from these two texts…. Who will share a new understanding you formed after reading and thinking about this event?

After reading both articles, I have a better understanding of the Battle of Gettysburg. Now I know that it was a really horrible battle and 50,000 people were killed or wounded. I also have a much clearer idea of what fighting in the Civil War must have been like for soldiers on both sides of the war.

Session 3: Texts A and B

VOCABULARY

RI.5.4 Discuss with students that during a war, a stalemate is a battle in which neither side can gain an advantage or win. After two long days of fighting at Gettysburg, neither the Union nor the Confederate soldiers could claim they were any closer to winning the war. Chess players also use this term to describe a situation where neither player can move their pieces or win the game.

ELL SUPPORT

RI.5.6 Discussing the Text Ask questions at students’ language proficiency levels and provide the following sentence frames for student responses: B: ___ and ___ are the same.___ and ___ are different.I/A: ___ and ___ are similar/the same because ___.___ and ___ are different because ___.

LEARNING FOCUSES RI.5.2, RI.5.6, RI.5.9

Students read closely in order to summarize the text and determine the main ideas and supporting details. Simultaneously, students compare and contrast the viewpoints and the most important information presented in two texts on the same topic.
