Here is a challenging and fun way to practice several math facts skills. Each of these 32 balance the equation task cards features two equal equations with one missing number. The equations are a mix of addition and subtraction within 20. The missing number appears equally in each of the four positions. Answer key, student answer sheet, and a cover card are also included. In addition, there is also a card for students to create their own equations. These cards would work well for use at math centers, as test prep, or with the whole class in a game such as scoot. Common Core Standards Addressed are listed on the next page. Printing and Cutting: These cards were made to be printed in color, but will print out fine in gray scale too. They should print out with even margins around the cards; however, because every printer is different, it is possible that you may need to adjust your printer settings. Selecting “actual size” or adjusting the size percentage should do the trick. Cut the cards apart using the dotted guidelines (discarding the bottom strip). Laminate if possible. Another option is to print on cardstock.

Common Core Standards Addressed Grade 1: CCSS.Math.Content.1.OA.B.4 Understand subtraction as an unknown-addend problem. For example, subtract 10 – 8 by finding the number that makes 10 when added to 8. CCSS.Math.Content.1.OA.C.6 Add and subtract within 20, demonstrating fluency for addition and subtraction within 10. Use strategies such as counting on; making ten (e.g., 8 + 6 = 8 + 2 + 4 = 10 + 4 = 14); decomposing a number leading to a ten (e.g., 13 – 4 = 13 – 3 – 1 = 10 – 1 = 9); using the relationship between addition and subtraction (e.g., knowing that 8 + 4 = 12, one knows 12 – 8 = 4); and creating equivalent but easier or known sums (e.g., adding 6 + 7 by creating the known equivalent 6 + 6 + 1 = 12 + 1 = 13). CCSS.Math.Content.1.OA.D.7 Understand the meaning of the equal sign, and determine if equations involving addition and subtraction are true or false. For example, which of the following equations are true and which are false? 6 = 6, 7 = 8 – 1, 5 + 2 = 2 + 5, 4 + 1 = 5 + 2.

Grade 2: CCSS.Math.Content.2.OA.B.2 Fluently add and subtract within 20 using mental strategies.2 By end of Grade 2, know from memory all sums of two one-digit numbers. Note: While I could not find any grade 3 standards to go with these cards, I still think they would be great for extra practice and reinforcement.

3 + = 14 - 7 3 4

+ 4 = 16 - 7

3 + 8 = + 2 1 2

12 – 6 = 5 +
