GRADE R-W CARLSWALD HOUSE PREPARATORY FEBRUARY | NEWSLETTER 1 NEWSLETTER FROM THE DESK OF MR TAGG Dear Parents I hope this finds you well. Welcome to our first newsletter of 2020. What an exciting and busy start to the year, we have all hit the ground running and the time is already flying by. I hope that all our new families are settled and happy, your children are all doing well and it is as if they have been with us for years! 345 and CHP really does become a “home away from home” for our children. CHP’s move across to Cambridge in January was a very exciting development for the school and things are moving along. The teachers are unpacking the curriculum and starting to integrate elements already. There will be some changes that will start to filter down right into the nursery school, particularly in Grade 00 where the teachers will start to develop number, letter and sound recognition a little earlier than in previous years. This is so that the children coming up from Grade 00 into Grade R are a little more prepared. This foundation will strengthen their ability to learn to read. We will also start to see some changes in the Mathematics curriculum, however much of what we already do at CHP is in the Cambridge curriculum so the adjustments and additions will be subtle. 345 is running well and our little ones have fun every day! Walking around both campuses warms my heart as I hear the shrieks of laughter and giggles and the buzz and excitement of the children as the learn and play together.

I would like to invite you all to the Cambridge Information Evening on the 26th March (Grade R-7) where representatives from Cambridge International Education will be present to discuss our path and to answer any questions you may have. Details will be sent out closer to the time. Our Co -Curricular programme is in full swing and we have competed against a number of schools this term already, with some excellent results coming out of these games. However, our focus remains participation and enjoyment before results and the children are learning valuable lessons every time, they go out to represent their school. I would like to thank you all for your continued support and for remaining with 345 and CHP this year. You have made the right choice and your children appreciate the sacrifices you make to have them here. Should you have any concerns please feel free to let me know. Should you have any compliments, please do the same. Have a wonderful day! Regards

Stewart Tagg

GRADE 4 M

Welcome to Grade 4 M! The children have loved their first few weeks of Senior Prep! They started the year with Retrain assessments to determine their learning styles. They also took part in activities to teach them the importance of listening.

In Natural Science the children have been learning about the Sun, Earth and Moon. They made their own ‘orbit mobiles’. When learning about the phases of the Moon, they used Oreo biscuits to demonstrate each phase.

In Social Science the children brought in an artefact older than them to research and share.

Celebrating Valentine’s Day in style!

The children created Vision Boards!

The children were introduced to Reading Eggs press!

The children have used iPads and Thinking Skills during group work in Global Perspectives.

New school year, Valentine’s Day, Class Assembly….Phew! What a fun-filled eventful

month !

English: We started the year off by getting our creative juices flowing. We created wonderful book covers that described how we spent our summer holidays. It was so exciting to see what our friends got up to during their break. We also had the opportunity to create our own superheroes. That was such an enjoyable and fun task to do. It was awesome to see how our imaginations helped us make up such incredible superheroes!

Natural Science: We created patterned book covers. The end result was quite interesting and eye-pleasing. We learnt about the various habitats by researching and designing posters. We also made an iMovie on it! It was pretty sensational to see our friend’s stage/camera personas come to life.

Social Science: PERSONAL ISLAND! We created brilliant islands that represented us and who we are. It was remarkable to see our friends unique ideas!

Last but not least, we had our CLASS ASSEMBLY on Valentine’s Day! We had such great fun rehearsing and presenting the five languages of love to the entire school. It was heart-warming to see how the school came together with chocolates, gifts and LOTS OF LOVE!

In English, the academic year started with a fun, yet intricate book cover design. Learners were extremely proud of their ‘Iris’ covers. Since beginning with Cambridge, we have delved into the genre: Suspense. Learners are enthralled by the imagery and creativity that is this

genre.

With the fluttering of the brown veined white butterfly in Johannesburg a couple of weeks ago, we just had to create a Social Science lesson on it. Learners used passport stamps to gain ‘entrance’ into each country the butterflies passed through. Once in, they completed an activity before moving on.

In Natural Science, learners used a Bubble Map and a Tree Map to present their findings on vertebrates.

Valentine’s Day was a perfect opportunity to practice our Afrikaans skills.

Listening skills were the aim of the game in English. Emoji’s were used to evaluate their partners’ listening ability.

Visual literacy is an important skill that we continue to work on at CHP. This comic book, which was written by two 6B learners, is a fantastic example of that.

Creating symmetrical Monsters for Mathematics.

Using Tree Maps and Bubble Maps to put together their findings on the seven life processes of their chosen

vertebrates.

Valentine’s Day activity about caring words in Afrikaans.

Creating Optical art galaxy backgrounds and their own acrostics about the Moon, Sun and Earth for their NS book covers.

We had our assembly where we taught the school how important it is to listen while someone is speaking, which is one of our very important school rules.

Senior Prep The Grade 4-7 learners have been hard at work in the IT lab. We started the year focusing on e-safety and looking at the importance of being safe online. We addressed email etiquette and learned how to email our teachers in a professional manner. The Grade 4s were introduced to code.org, the Grade 5s made their own emojis, the Grade 6 learners made interactive keynotes for Math’s and the Grade 7s are starting a new coding programme. Let the hard work and fun times continue.

MUSIC

Happy New Year to all the CHP family! Our Music Department is growing in leaps and bounds. We have added violins to our Saturday music program. We also, we have a new pianist and guitarist adding to our growth. The Grade 4 classes have started with drumming this term. They are having an excellent and fun experience as they learn different drumming songs and patterns. We are excited to announce that Phela Re Phele Music Academy in Soweto will host a workshop whereby the CHP wind ensemble will be a part of Professional musicians will come and share their expertise and experience with the children.
