Learning Summary

Reach for Reading Unit 7 Big Question: What jobs can people do?

During this 9th week of at-home learning, Kindergarteners will continue in Unit 7 of their Reach for Reading curriculum, and engage in new learning. Students will read “Elephant Car Wash” and listen to “Bear at Work” read aloud. As students read and listen to this week’s stories, they will think about the characters and their jobs. In addition, students will identify the /qu/ and /x/ sound in words.

For our students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) we have included a list

of accommodations for you to use. Feel free to choose the accommodation from

the list that best supports your student. The accommodations appear after every

task, and are meant to support the learning for that specific task. Please note any

accommodations in your student’s IEP that are not listed below may be used as

well.

Word Work

Task 1:

With an adult, review the new high frequency words in Unit 7:

are, from, no, want, some, little, play

Find the High Frequency Word Cards worksheet. Find and read the Unit 7 High Frequency words, and color in the box. Cut out the words, and have an adult flash the cards to you. Read the flashcards. Finally, build sentences using the flashcards. Read your sentences to an adult.

Accommodations for students with IEPs:

1. Read aloud: For students who have difficulty accessing the text – An adult may read the passage to the student.

2. Scribe: For students who have difficulty with writing – the student may verbally respond while an adult writes their response on their paper.

3. Break work into manageable chunks: This allows students to complete this task over an extended period of time. Have your student complete the flash cards. Have student write, or scribe for them. Provide a break if needed. After the break, have your student build sentences using the flash cards.

With an adult, find capital /Q/ and lowercase /q/ in your Alphachant Book. The letter /q/ goes with the letter /u/. Together they say /kw/. Find all the /qu/ words in the book. Read them with an adult. Read the Alphachant Book Qq with an adult. Underline all the /qu/ words found in the book. Read each word.

What sound does /qu/ make together?

*Repeat these steps for the letter /x/ in the Alphachant Book Xx.

Text: “Elephant Car Wash” [Reading A-Z mini book]

Task 1:

Read “Elephant Car Wash”. While reading, think about how you would describe the elephant car wash. Fold a piece of paper into four parts. Number each box 1,2,3,4. Retell the story by drawing a picture in each box of what happened 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. Tell the answers to the questions to an adult:

Did the elephant do a good job washing the car? Why do you think this way?

Listen to the read aloud story “Bear at Work” by Stella Blackstone . As you listen to the story, think about Bear’s job.

What is Bear’s job? How do the illustrations help you better understand the work Bear does?

After listening to the story, draw a bubble map on a piece of paper. In the middle write, Bear is a Postman. In the outside circles, draw pictures or write what the other working bears in town do. Tell the answers to the questions to an adult:

What job does a florist do? What clues help you figure this out?
