Grade 9 Science at Ancaster HS
What is in Grade 9 Science? Both the applied and academic programs cover the same overall units of study
There are five areas of study or skill development
Units We Look At1. Scientific Skill Development2. Sustainable Ecosystems3. Atoms, Elements and
Compounds4. The Study of the Universe5. The Characteristics of
Electricity
How is Applied Different From Academic? The method of teaching the material
and the application of the topics is different
Our Applied courses focus on hands on application of theory
You get to try labs many times to help you understand a theory
Academic courses focus more on the theory’s impact in society or the environment
What are the States of Matter?3 Forms:
Solid, Liquid, Gas
What are Changes in Matter?
6 Changes:
- Evaporation - Liquid --> Gas- Condensation - Gas --> Liquid - Melting (Liquification) - Solid --> Liquid- Freezing (Solidification) - Liquid --> Solid- Sublimation – Solid --> Gas- Deposition - Gas --> Solid
But, What is Matter?Made up of atoms and moleculesHas mass
What makes a state of matter? The physical state in which the molecules
and atoms of a substance are found
Recap: 3 States of Matter Solid Liquid Gas

Changing States of MatterMolecules and atoms can move from one
physical state to another and not changeWater, H2O, has the same properties as a liquid
as it does as a solid (ice) or a gas (steam – water vapour)
Although its physical state may change, its chemical state remains the same
