Tips for Effective Studying
PREPARE: Preparation for exams begins by being an active participant in class. Focus on the
content the teacher presents, ask relevant questions, engage with the material and do your
homework consistently.
PLAN AHEAD: Do not wait until the night before an exam to study start preparing now to
avoid last minute stress.
FIND OUT WHAT WORKS FOR YOU: Find the study method that works for you. Use
highlighters, diagrams, lists, graphs, flash cards, mnemonics, past exam papers and revision
activities in order to help you prepare.
GET ENOUGH SLEEP: Never try to pull an all-nighter before an exam. What you may gain
from extra study time wont compensate for the loss of alertness and concentration due to
lack of sleep.
MAKE A STUDY SPACE: Set up an efficient study area at home an area with a desk and
chair where you can leave all your notes and books. Plan this area carefully; keep adequate
supplies of stationery and paper at hand.
REMOVE ANY DISTRACTIONS: Do not try to study around distractions such as the television
or with your cell phone on and next to you. Leave these for your break times.
TAKE A BREAK: Allow yourself regular breaks during studying. Set times before you begin
studying and stick to those times.
REMEMBER TO:
o Get a good nights sleep (at least 8 hours)
o Eat a good breakfast each morning
o Make sure you bring enough stationery (pens, pencils, erasers, calculator etc.)
o Pack your bag the night before
o Bring your ID card
SIT UP STRAIGHT: When studying and writing take care to maintain good posture, do not
slouch.
READ: Read all instructions carefully and follow them.
TIME MANAGEMENT: Plan your time carefully when writing an exam and check your work
if you have time at the end.
DONT PANIC:
o If you go blank, skip the question and move on.
o Dont worry when others finish writing early, there is no reward for finishing first.
o Use relaxation techniques to deal with anxiety. Focus on your breathing, take slow, deep breaths. Remind yourself that you have prepared for this exam.
Remember that hard work pays off!
