Academic News Math – Welcome to 2012! Students have begun their exploration into geometric concepts. This week we explored angle relationships including those angles formed by parallel lines and a transversal. The study of triangle classifications and the Pythagorean Theorem will also be covered over the next several days. Algebra – Students are deep in the study of linear equations. Writing equations of parallel and perpendicular lines was a focus this week. This has helped strengthen their understanding of the slope-intercept form of the linear equation. Reading – Students in Mr. Reinhart's reading classes worked on final preparation for assessment on Common Core Standards 1, 3, 5, and 6. As well, students finalized work on their three required Accelerated Reader exams for Semester One. Work was also initiated for our next novel, The Pigman, by Paul Zindel. The focus has been on pre-reading activities and vocabulary. Applied LA – Students are finishing their study of World War I next week with our assessment on Tuesday. This included reading WWI poetry and writing letters as a soldier in the trenches. Our next focus will be the Roaring Twenties.
Science - Science students received their third textbook of the year this week, Earth's Waters. This week we reviewed the water cycle, learned how glaciers and icebergs form, and examined a variety of organisms that rely on the polar ice caps for survival. On Thursday students will have their next three-week assessment.
